Jessamine Brady knows her identity only as a young girl in her grandmother's cabin the Kentucky woods until the age of ten, when her grandmother passed away. From there, she is taken to the Shaker village in Harmony Hill. For the next ten years, Jessamine is brought up as a Shaker Sister, loving her brethren equally as taught by the Ministry. Curious about the world around her, Jessamine is often found to be in transgression when her disregard of the strict rules land her in trouble. On one such excursion, she finds a man left for dead in the woods, and she brings him back to her village. In the space of three weeks, Jessamine finds herself questioning the very principles and values that define who she really is. Will Tristan be the answer she seeks? Or will he be the very one that tears her apart from her faith and true salvation with the Believers?

A stunning and fitting end to the Shaker series, (if indeed, this is the last installment), it is a wonderful work in and of itself. While the longest book in the series, it was one I simply did not want to put down. I wanted to stay in the land of Jessamine's mind and innocence a little longer, to see things from her point of view. You will feel as if you are learning all these new things right along side her: her hopes, her dreams, her discoveries of life, the good and the bad. A novel rich in the life of yet another Shaker sister, well written, and drew me like a moth to flame.

I've read several books by Ann Gabhart and The Gifted is by far one of the best.
My first book by Ann was a gift, it was the first time I had heard of the Shakers. I could never be a Shaker, however I do enjoy reading about how they lived. My husband tells me I like to talk, and read to much to be a Shaker. I'll admit I like all the modern convenioues we have.

Shakerism originated in England in the 18th century. Their leader, Ann Lee, was believed to be the second coming of Christ, in female form. The name Shaker came from the way they worshipped. When members received the "spirit", they would begin to shake all over. The Shakers were known as being peaceful people, a simple life by shutting away the outside world. They believed the outside world had never taken the time to seek a core of inner peace and therefore did not realize how the gift to be simple can make an open mind free to see and feel the purpose of our lives .... 'Tis the gift to be simple, 'Tis the gift to be free (taken from Simple Gifts, a Shaker Hymn).

Jessamine, a beautiful character, has been at Harmony Village for over ten years and as events unfold leaves the village for the outside world. She quickly loses the"gift to be simple" and feels enticed by the devil to embrace the worldly things. She finds the outside world to be a baffling place and starts to feel regret for leaving the Shaker village.

The Gifted is a very compelling story with conflict, sweet romance, and suspense. One negative comment .... I found the first two hundred pages to drag on and found myself skimming some pages, but the second half does pick up and becomes quite captivating.

I highly recommend this novel .... a great inspirational read!

This was another great story by Ann H. Gabhart. I really enjoy reading her books. The story was about a young girl (Jessamine) that had been taken to live at the Shaker Village at an early age because her grandmother had died and there was no one to take care of her except a long lost father that she did not know except for what her grandmother had told her. While living there for about 10 years, she always had maintained a curious mind about worldly things and longed to write down stories that came to her mind. These things were forbidden to her as a Shaker. On an outing in the woods one day looking for berries, she ran across a hurt young man that she helped get to the Shakers for medical attention. Any association with this man was forbidden to her by the Shakers but it didn't stop her from falling in love with this outsider. The outsider leaves the Shakers when he is able but still don't forget the one he fell in love with. Jessamine's long lost father shows up one day to take her from the Shakers to live with him in the outside world. She now gets the chance to satisfy some of her curiosity about the world and she also finds her young man again, only to realize that he is promised to someone else in marriage. There are many interesting and surprising things that happen with the rest of the story and I recommend reading this book very highly.

I love Ann Gabhart's stories and enjoy finding out what life would have been like for my great great grandmother/grandfather who were Shaker's in KY. I've come to learn a side of the Shaker's that I didn't know. I never realized until I read some of the other Shaker books Ann Gabhart has written, that the Shaker's didn't let the children of a mother remain with the mother when they joined the society. This is very sad to me. I can understand the separation of man and woman - but not that of child and mother!
I liked the story line of The Gifted, but the book was too repetitive - I got tired of reading the same remarks several or more times throughout the book. Like another review, this book could have been 200 to 300 pages and not been so repetitive and been more enjoyable. I found myself just perusing the pages where they were saying the same thing AGAIN, then I'd make myself go back and read the pages in case I missed something - but I didn't miss any of the story-line by perusing the page after all!
My favorite Shaker story has been The Believer - if you haven't read it - give it a try and see if you agree with me!

A story telling of their beliefs, and those in their community.

There are many twists and turns involving another near community and the Shakers.
