Hearts and loyalties collide in this electrifying new YA series from New York Times bestselling author Jennifer A. Nielsen.

Jennifer A. Nielsen's New York Times bestseller The Traitor's Game, which Entertainment Weekly called "the next big YA fantasy," is perfect for fans of the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard and the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. Kestra Dallisor has spent three years in exile in the Lava Fields, but that won't stop her from being drawn back into her father's palace politics. He's second-in-command to the cruel king, Lord Endrick, which makes Kestra a valuable bargaining chip. A group of rebels knows this -- and they snatch Kestra from her carriage as she reluctantly travels home. The kidnappers want her to retrieve the lost Olden Blade, the only object that can destroy the king, but Kestra is not the obedient captive they expected. One of the rebels, Simon, has his hands full as Kestra tries to foil their plot, by any means necessary. As motives shift and secrets emerge, both have to decide what -- and who -- it is they're fighting for.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6–8—The world has been engulfed in perpetual war. Kestra, the daughter of the emperorlike leader of the Dominion, is blackmailed into stealing a powerful artifact called the Olden Blade which can tilt the balance of power in the region. Between the onslaught of warring tribes and ever-changing loyalties, the book is replete with tense moments that propel the story forward. Nielsen does a masterful job keeping readers off guard while tightening the screws of tension throughout, satisfying even the most reluctant readers. The dialogue can read dry at times, but the plot-based twists and turns more than make up for it. An otherworldly story with a side of fantasy on the surface, the setup and struggle feels universal. Small plot reveals are meted out every few scenes to keep teens intrigued and thirsting for more. This is clearly the first of a series, as the ending is just the reckoning that some much larger battle is at hand. VERDICT A competent addition to any middle school library, especially where there are fans of Cassandra Clare and Suzanne Collins.—Brian Hoff, Elmwood Park High School, IL

This novel was one of my most highly anticipated of 2018’s releases and I’m so thrilled to be a part of the blog tour to celebrate it’s release! Scholastic was kind enough to send me a copy for review so I wanted to share my thoughts with all of you! This novel is packed with the classic elements of a great fantasy tale – mysterious family secrets, unknown family bloodlines, a prophecy depicting the future of a nation of people, an evil overlord taking power by force and an epic battle to find the one thing that could save them all. If you love fantasy that mixes in magical elements into the everyday world, you will love this story.Antora is a place that is filled with secret magical beings, capable of manipulating elements depending on the level of their specific power and abilities. Lord Endrick is an evil ruler who is determined to eradicate all of those with magic in order to keep it all for himself. This story in many ways reminded me of the dynamic we see throughout the Grishaverse when it comes to siphoning the powers of the Grisha, each gifted with magic that falls within different categories. Ironically enough, much of what takes away from this novel is the same thing that, for me, took away from the story in Bardugo’s novels — the romance.Nielsen has an incredibly captivating story that is filled with mysteries and twists that will keep readers on the edge as they discover how the prophecy will be fulfilled and who can wield the Olden Blade to save Antora. This content is where the novel shines, as Nielsen has woven characters throughout the novel giving small tidbits of information scattered throughout the story that ultimately come together for the large reveal at the end that will have readers quickly turning the pages for more. For me, what takes away from this portion of the novel is the way in which our romance develops between our main characters.Romantic sub-plots have come to be second nature in epic fantasy tales but they can sometimes distract from the overall feel of the novel, in my opinion. Our main characters shared a traumatic childhood past, only to grow to hate one another as adults. Though it is clear from the beginning that they dislike each other, it takes a total of 3 seconds for our male hero to begin questioning his feelings for Kestra. Much of this is done through an internal dialogue that aims to be sarcastic and quippy, but in my opinion comes across as predictable and a bit corny. In many ways, the internal questioning of feelings from Simon and Kestra follow a dialogue style that isn’t consistent with the rest of the novel and made it difficult to look past. It was actually very difficult to make it through the first 100 pages of the story because so much of the content focused on their conflicting feelings with one another while not revealing much content. After that, the writing seems to find itself again and readers are less distracted by the romantic sub-plot and are catapulted into a dangerous game of secrets, lies and betrayal. The second half of the novel totally changed my outlook on the book and guaranteed that I’ll pursue reading the second installment. Characters like Darrow and Gerald enhanced the story for me and helped me to invest in the overarching goal of saving Antora from Lord Endrick. What I appreciate is that even though we know Lord Endrick is bad, it is still unclear what path Kestra will take in order to save the people of Antora. Divided into three sub-groups who all have different beliefs of the world, Kestra is faced with finding not only her path, but her place among this world and her new responsibilities.Overall, I enjoyed this book and I was excited to see it take hold of me after while. It’s a relatively quick read and I think fantasy lovers of the Grisha world will find this to be a captivating new land to discover and explore. I was excited about this book when I read about it last year. It seemed to have everything I look for in a book, and the cover is very interesting and alluring. It seemed to have a powerful female lead and strong supporting characters. I am pleased to say the book delivered everything I could imagine it would and left me wanting more from the story. I do look forward to reading the next book when it comes out next year.

Kestra is probably one of the strongest female leads I have read in YA this year. She is not willing to go down easy and comes out fighting. She doesn't whimper or whine about her situation, but instead does what she can to come out on top even if it means lying to those she trusts the most. We know she has strong fighting skills taught to her from Darrow, but we really don't get to see it...yet. I hope there will be more action in the next book as it progresses to the next stage of the story. Kestra has more depth to her than I have seen in a while and I am proud that Nielsen took the time to create a bold feisty, alluring heroine rather than a princess whose only concern are her dresses and status.

The Traitor's Game is a story packed full of battle scenes, murder, secrets, romance, and strength all rolled into a tale the takes readers on a roller coaster ride. Some things I was able to predict and figure out, but other things were not what I was expecting. While the book was fast paced and kept the reader wanting more, there were a few slower points that made me want to skip over them and read the next chapter. I did find myself saying "one more chapter" until I looked at the clock and seen it was 2 am.

One of the most anticipated novels of 2018 and it does not disappoint. I look forward to seeing what Nielsen has in store for readers in the next book of the series. I would recommend it if you enjoy fantasy. If you enjoy novels like the Throne of Glass series, then you will most likely enjoy this novel.

Jennifer Nielsen does a great job of creating fiery characters who almost immediately find themselves in trouble up to their eyeballs. The Traitor's Game is no different. But this story follows the fortunes and misfortunes of two main characters, Kestra, the daughter of a very powerful man in the country of Antora's government, and Simon, a member of the resistance group called the Coracks. After three years in exile, Kestra is on her way home when she and her entourage are waylay-ed. With her servants' lives on the line, Kestra is forced into agreeing to help the Coracks retrieve a magical item supposedly hidden at her home of Woodcourt. Simon and a girl named Trina are sent with Kestra to ensure that she follows orders. But Kestra has plans of her own and they don't involve helping traitors and betraying her own family.

But as so often happens the plans of Kestra, Simon, and Trina don't go off without a hitch. The tension between Kestra and Trina threatens to derail all their plans and Simon's feelings about the girl he used to know aren't all hatred. The point of view switches between Kestra and Simon, giving the reader a glimpse into the mind and heart of each as they struggle to accomplish their objectives. The tension between Simon and Kestra goes back and forth between attraction and loyalty to their respective causes. But as Kestra faces her father again and even Lord Endrick, the evil ruler the Coracks are sworn to destroy, she starts learning things that shake her faith in the life she's always known.

Finding the Olden Blade, which offers the only hope of defeating Lord Endrick, offers Kestra a chance of rescuing her servants and helping her country. But both Kestra and Simon are walking a very fine line between loyalty and betrayal. Is there any way out of this mess that leaves them both alive?

Nielsen has written an action-packed, thriller of a novel. Kestra and Simon are both sympathetic characters that I found myself caring about, even though they are on different sides as the story begins. But the author does a fantastic job of writing a compelling story that I read quickly with lots of twists and turns. There are hints about where the story is going to go but interestingly, the characters know more about certain things than the reader, which makes the reveals all the more of a shock. I can't wait to read the next book!

Note: There is some violence in the book because of the nature of the story (revolution). There is also some kissing.

This book was a surprise. Found it on Amazon, liked the cover, title and blurb, so I went and bought it. Haven't intended on starting reading it immediately.

But I did.

And I was hooked.

Kestra is the daughter of a hated man. At first, she too is a bit on the insufferable side - there were times I liked her, but also disliked her. However, she changes throughout the story, and, when reaching the end of the book, you can't believe it's the same character.

Simon. Oh, Simon! He's on the other side of the on-going battle. Is it the good side, while Kestra's on the bad one? No one can tell, really. Okay, so maybe Kestra's side is a definite bad, but Simon's side isn't all pink and rainbows and unicorns.

As the story evolves, there's twist after twist, one intrigue after another. Secrets are revealed, certain truths surfacing. You have hunches and sometimes, they come true, other times they don't.

While it did end on a cliffhanger, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be - yes, I, who hated cliffhangers (still not a fan), have come across so many type of cliffhangers since switching to YA fantasy that this one didn't bother me. Plus, book two comes out in March, so there is that.

Battles, kidnappings, bad guys, good guys - or relative good guys, a feisty heroine and swoon-worthy hero. There's magic too. And annoying side characters.

But it's a good one and I can't wait to see what happens next! 4.5 stars.
