An Irish Country Family
is a charming entry in Patrick Taylor's beloved internationally bestselling Irish Country series.

Before Doctor Barry Laverty joined Doctor Fingal O’Reilly's practice in the colorful Irish village of Ballybucklebo, he was an intern, working long hours, practicing new medical techniques, falling in love, and learning what is most important in the medical field for a family physician―the bonds of family, friendships, and human kindness.

Years later, Barry practices everything he has learned in Ballybucklebo, a lovely village where neighbor looks after neighbor. And while his own efforts to start a family with his wife Sue have been frustrated, the community around him couldn’t be stronger as they work together to show their solidarity.

Shifting effortlessly between the two time periods, bestselling author Patrick Taylor continues the story of these beloved characters while vividly bringing the daily joys and struggles of this delightful Irish village to life.

Born in 1941, Taylor was brought up in Bangor, Northern Ireland, and receieved his medical education in Ulster. He initially practiced in a rural Ulster village akin to Ballybucklebo before taking specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. After living in Belfast through the first two years of the recent Irish Troubles (1969-1994) he and his family emigrated to Canada where he pursued a career in medical research and teaching in the field of human infertility. His contributions have been honoured with three lifetime achievement awards including the Lifetime Award of Excellence of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society.

A talent for the written word, first recognized when he was 16 by his winning the “Campbellian Prize for Literature”, led to an outpouring of contributions to the medical literature. His scientific works include 170 papers and six textbooks, one translated from the original French. For ten years, (1991-2001) he was editor-in-chief of the Canadian Obstetrics and Gynaecology journal.

To add leavening to dry, academic prose Taylor has always nurtured his creative side. His monthly medical humour columns which began in 1991, En Passant, Medicine Chest and Taylor’s Twist were followed by his appointment as book reviewer to Stitches: The Journal of Medical Humour.

If you love Ireland, come from there, have parents or grandparents that come from there, you will LOVE this series of books! Funny, relatable, warm and wonderful characters. Patrick Taylor is a wonderfully writer so get ready to transport yourself and meet Dr Fingal Flaherty O’ Reilly!

I love this series on the Irish Country. It may be somewhat confusing to a new reader as it refers to the past lives of characters.
Then it fast forwards to the present day. I liked it anyway

I love this series of books, and I'm looking forward to the next one! I started with the first book in the series and got hooked! These books have made me long to visit Northern Ireland (but the 1950s, 60s one... which exists only in memory now...), and to wish I'd known the people he created... esp. Fingal! I enjoy the excellent and well-researched medical aspects of all the books, which I find fascinating, as well as the history, and the recipes- all of it. And I love that at the bottom of it all, his people are just plain Nice- they take care of each other, watch out for each other, and they aren't mean... what a lovely, refreshing concept!

While the story line revolves around current event (1969), it reaches back to 1963 to fill in the background of young Dr. Laverty with his trials and tribulations. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

I loved every single word of this and all of his Irish Country books. One his truly emerged into Ulster living and is placed in the middle of lives that are deep in so many ways, always endearing, and though I dislike having to finish one of these books, I always read the last words with two thoughts: I will re-read it again soon and I am so fortunate to be able to read an author of such, almost, unbelievable talent.

A fantastic series of books by Patrick Taylor who is a gifted author I now own most of his books set in Ballybucklebo and Dublin and also his experience as a navy Surgeon Commander
I have read many books during my life but never enjoyed any as much as The Irish Country Series I have recommended the books to many of my friends and as we all live in Northern Ireland we can relate to all the places and historical events that Patrick has included in the chapters. I feel that I know the characters so well. I also bought Kinky's Cookery Book. LIKE "All creatures great and small"I wish a TV series of films would be made of these books
