In A. J. Hartley’s thrilling and intriguing 19th-century South African-inspired fantasy world,
which started with the Thriller Award-winning Steeplejack and continues with Guardian, Anglet Sutonga is a teenage detective fighting in a race against time as her beloved city is pushed to the brink.

This is what Ang knows:

A dear friend is accused of murdering the Prime Minister of Bar-Selehm.

A mysterious but fatal illness is infecting the poor.

A fanatical politician seizes power, unleashing a wave of violent repression over the city.

This is what Ang must do:

Protect her family.

Solve a murder.

RESIST, no matter what, before it’s too late.

“Richly-drawn and diverse cast of characters, with an unstoppable plot!” ―
Carrie Ryan, New York Times bestselling author

“Smart political intrigue wrapped in all the twists and turns of a good detective story.”

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Yet again Hartley has successfully intertwined an intricate mystery with weighty cultural and political considerations that truly echo the times in which we live.” Booklist

“With just enough exposition of previous events, this can be read as a stand-alone title, although it is much more satisfying to read after the first two. This is a must-read for continuing the series.”―
Voya, Sharon A Martin.

“Anglet and her associates are thrust into the center of the social upheaval that strives to pull the city back from the brink and toward justice. The complexity of the forces at work leave Anglet stuck and frustrated more often than in the previous books. Heart-pounding Anglet-attacked-by-animals scenes keep the plot from slowing down, and the action sequences are among the most emotional moments....Fans of the series will be eager for more.”
Kirkus Reviews, on Guardian

Praise for the Steeplejack series

“Hartley creates a world so analogous to our own it hardly seems like a fantasy....Anglet has blossomed in this sequel, releasing her previously restrained sharp tongue and expanding her emotional range. Even as she learns to put on a neutral face to be a more effective spy, her empathy for those who are suffering and her relentless search for the truth are her most laudable attributes.”
Kirkus Reviews, starred review, on Firebrand

“The well-crafted adventures of this feisty, diverse protagonist continue in this worthy sequel to Steeplejack (2016), evoking Sherlock Holmes with its Victorian-esquesetting, and James Bond in its espionage-laced plot. Hartley has composed another electrifying fantasy that buzzes with intrigue and timely political and social issues, making this a must-have addition to any collection.”
Booklist, starred review, on Firebrand

“Expertly written, never preaching or pointing fingers, but subtly applying pressure to examine race issues, gender inequalities, microaggressions, and socio-economic problems in our culture…. Teens will see themselves in the tough, realistic, and fierce yet vulnerable protagonist. The multicultural worldbuilding will draw in readers of many ages and backgrounds, while the well-crafted mystery and action will keep them wanting more.”
VOYA, on Firebrand

“Hartley's story succeeds in building a detailed world of both familiar (charging hippos) and unfamiliar (a precious mineral, luxorite, used by the rich) elements while also tackling a wide range of complicated social issues....Most impressive is the genre-blending; the author adeptly merges a political thriller with action, adventure, and mystery. Will have strong appeal to a wide range of readers, particularly those looking for complex novels that reflect a diverse world.”
School Library Journal, on Firebrand

“A richly realized world, an intensely likable character, and a mystery to die for."
―Cory Doctorow, New York Times-bestselling author, on Steeplejack

“A thought-provoking blend of action and intrigue, with a competent and ethical heroine in Ang and a fully imagined setting whose atmosphere and cultural cues also play important roles. The result is an unforgettable page-turner built on surprises and full of potential.”
Publishers Weekly, starred review, on Steeplejack

“Skillful writing, masterful pacing, and a capable and quite likable female detective are just a few of the things to love about this fantasy-adventure....In addition to the detective angle, Hartley thoughtfully explores issues such as race relations, both inter- and intra-racial, as Anglet deals with the censure of her own community, and class issues, as she attempts to work outside the political system to solve the murder. This one won’t stay on the shelf for long.”
Booklist, starred review, on Steeplejack

“Smart political intrigue wrapped in all the twists and turns of a good detective story makes for a rip-roaring series opener.”
Kirkus Reviews, starred review, on Steeplejack

“A city in crisis, breathtaking rooftop chases, harrowing assaults, blood oaths, love and loyalty, brutal betrayals and impressive detective work by the intelligent, intuitive Ang unfold in a fascinating, vividly described setting that includes smog and slums, gas lamps and opera houses, baboons and bush babies. A political, multilayered mystery-thriller with a strong, impressively fierce heroine.”
Shelf Awareness, starred review, on Steeplejack

“Steeplejack is quietly thoughtful and breathlessly exciting, and with two more series installments to follow, Ang’s personal and professional journey is far from over.”
BookPage, Teen Top Pick

“With its unique South African-inspired setting, richly-drawn and diverse cast of characters, and unstoppable plot, readers of any age won't be able to put Steeplejack down!”
―Carrie Ryan, New York Times bestselling author, on Steeplejack

“With Steeplejack, A.J. Hartley introduces a dynamic, complex and likeable new heroine who combines wits, skill and courage to face deadly challenges in an exotic world. Teens and adults will love this book and want more, more, more!”
―Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author, on Steeplejack

“A.J. Hartley has created an exquisite, explosive, nail-biting, tear-rousing masterpiece, in a world so realistic it might be right around the corner.”
―Faith Hunter, New York Times bestselling author, on Steeplejack

“What a world Hartley has created! Enough twists and surprises to keep the pages turning long into the night.”
―R.L. Stine, on Steeplejack

“A unique epic adventure set in a richly imagined world; lush, exotic and masterfully written. It's Sherlock Holmes, Oliver Twist, and Indiana Jones rolled into one.”
―Lissa Price, internationally bestselling author of Starters and Enders, on Steeplejack

“Smart and socially-aware, this fabulous debut adds to the growing library of multicultural fantasy and is a loudly resounding success.”
―Nisi Shawl, Tiptree Award-winning author of Everfair, on Steeplejack

“With Steeplejack, A.J. Hartley creates a world as complex as its heroine, and a mystery that spans class, race and geography. You can feel the grit and glory of Bar-Selehm, a many-spired city teetering on the edge of the savannah, and the verge of war. The perfect setting for a street-smart young woman who is caught between three cultures, yet refuses to be trapped by them.”
―Sherri L. Smith, award-winning author of Flygirls and Orleans, on Steeplejack

“Hartley has created a world so gritty and real I could taste the soot.”
―Maurice Broaddus, author of the Knights of Breton Court trilogy, on Steeplejack

Steeplejack combines a lively and intelligent plot with an intriguing and well-drawn world, and caps all this goodness with a determined and indefatigable heroine.” ―Kate Elliott, author of Court of Fives and Black Wolves, on Steeplejack

“A rich, atmospheric tale of adventure, morality and consequence, Steeplejack will linger with you long after you read the last page.”
―Kady Cross, author of the Steampunk Chronicles and Sisters of Blood and Spirit series, on Steeplejack

“Elegant prose, a cracking good mystery, lots of action, and characters to fall in love with and root for. I read it cover to cover in no time at all. In fact, I did so twice! And I was on the edge of my seat both times.”
―D.B. Jackson, author of the Thieftaker series, on Steeplejack

“I was completely hooked from page one. Ang is a hero to cheer for heart and soul. A thrilling, clever, meaningful read.”
―Leanna Renee Hieber, award-winning author of Strangely Beautiful and The Eterna Files, on Steeplejack

“An exquisitely built mystery set in a lush, vibrant world. I was loath to leave Ang and Bar-Selehm behind at the end of it. Definitely a book to be revisited again and again.” ―
Kat Zhang, author of What’s Left of Me, on Steeplejack

Welcome to my Amazon home!

Everyone always tells writers that the best way to be successful is to choose what kind of book you most like to write and then produce lots of them. "Branding," they call it, and it's good advice. The surest way to build a fan base is to write books in the same genre, perhaps even with the same recurring character as your hero.

It won't take you long poking around my offerings on Amazon to see that I haven't taken this advice. I write the kinds of books I like to read, and because my reading tastes are eclectic, my writing is all over the place.

I write mystery/thrillers (often with an archaeological bent such as my Deborah Miller or Thomas Knight books), fantasy adventures of the swords and sorcery variety (albeit from the slightly unusual perspective of a smart-mouthed young actor called Will Hawthorne), historical fiction (such as my adaptations of Shakespeare's Macbeth and Hamlet [co-written with David Hewson), and my Darwen Arkwright series for younger readers (or young at heart readers). Then there's my young adult work: the Steeplejack series, which is fantasy (of a sort), Cold Bath Street and Written Stone Lane (ghost stories), Cathedrals of Glass (science fiction) and Impervious (a kind of fantasy rooted in an all too real ordinary world). I also write sc-fi/historical fiction with Tom DeLonge (of Blink 182). My most recent solo novel is a goofy, time-travel fantasy called Burning Shakespeare. It may not make marketing sense, but I write the stories I feel like I have to tell. I have, alas, no brand, though I'd love to be able to live by the slogan "Fun books for smart people" :)

I was born in Northern England in Preston, and have lived in many places including Japan. I'm a Shakespeare Professor at UNC Charlotte, and though my Ph.D. was in literature I specialize in performance history and theory. You can reach me through my website (www.ajhartley.net), facebook and twitter. I'm always delighted to hear what people think of my work. Enjoy!

This was the perfect end to the Steeplejack trilogy! I can't remember being so satisfied with the ending of a series in a very long time. Ang is wonderful lead character - flawed and awesome at the same time. There is action and intrigue - it really makes you think and try to piece together what is happening. Everything converges brilliantly and the final scenes are gratifying and exciting (with some sadness - no spoilers). I enjoyed this series greatly and look forward to more books from this author.

he If you haven't been reading the Steeplejck books by AJ Hartley, you've been missing out. The series, which follows a chimney sweeper(or Steeplejack, hence the title) turned spy, reaches its conclusion in this book. I don't want to give too much away, but involves assassination, traitors in the government, and oppression of people because of their skin color. Parallels between today's Trump administration, the Palestinian Diaspora and the former situation in South Africa could definitely be drawn, and the action proceeds at a breakneck pace. A satisfying conclusion with an ending that manages to be hopeful, and yet cautious at the same time. Well done!

Steeplejack was one of my favorite books of all time, Firebrand was good, and Guardian is the equal of Steeplejack. Protagonist Anglet has emotional depth, the plot is exciting and full of surprise. The world of Bar Sehlem is richly imagined. I wish I could write this well!

What can I say about this the third book in this incredibly emotive series ? Ang has come a long way since her work as a steeplejack repairing chimneys. Now she’s firmly ensconced in the household of liberal politician Josiah Willinghouse but there are those who fiercely oppose his policies and that makes Willinghouse a target or should I say scapegoat ?
A fabulous return/conclusion to this alternative view of what could be nineteenth century South Africa. Please note I wouldn’t call this steampunk as then readers start to expect certain things and this series is unlike any other that I have read. Our heroine is a young woman of colour living in a world of discrimination and an unfair class system . There are what I can only describe as almost colonial whites taking centre stage which leaves those of colour , no matter how numerous definitely at the bottom of the pecking order. I found the situation Ang lives in gave me pause on numerous occasions as the race issues were just part of the inequality and gender issues too were used to great effect to bring this harsh society to life.
Ang stands heads and shoulders above the other characters here although there is one of note whose strong beliefs sadly lead him to make the ultimate sacrifice. There is a cracking mystery for Ang to unravel but I feel those who have followed this journey will enjoy how the author brings about a satisfying conclusion. It’s exciting, complex and thought provoking with a unique setting and I found myself gripped.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

I loved the entire Steeplejack series. Anglet Sutonga is one of the most realistic protagonists I have ever had the pleasure to read. I also especially liked the romance that was hinted at throughout the trilogy that was finally confirmed at the end of the book!

I do wish that this was not the last book though because I will greatly miss the scarily-realistic world of Bar-Selehm and Ang's continuing adventures.
Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2018
Guardian is the third installment in A. J. Hartley's outstanding series that began with Steeplejack. Guardian returns readers to the city-state Bar-Selehm, where protagonist Anglet Sutonga, a smart and tactically brilliant young woman, finds herself grappling with a fascist take-over of the government. Able to climb high above the city and gather information from a variety of sources on the ground, Ang works to protect her community, political leaders, and friends. Hartley's writing is clear and exciting, and often eloquent, a rare thing in thrillers. While Guardian will get marketed as "YA," in part for its obvious (but never pedantic) messages about racism, sexism, politics, voting, and resistance in our own world, the book--and the entire, beautifully-crafted series--should appeal to readers of all ages. Quite honestly, I'd like to put this series in the hands of everyone in the US capable of reading it.
