"Character development and relationships build slowly as tensions escalate between the Hebrews and the Arameans. The plot is swift moving as Tirzah's safety changes from one chapter to the next. Like Flames in the Night is another engrossing adventure enriched by a splendid historical narrative and deep spirituality. For fans of Biblical fiction, Cossette's novels are not to be missed!"--Historical Novels Review

About the author
Connilyn Cossette is a Christy Award and Carol Award winning author whose books have been found on both ECPA and CBA bestseller lists. When she is not engulfed in the happy chaos of homeschooling two teenagers, devouring books whole, or avoiding housework, she can be found digging into the rich ancient world of the Bible to discover gems of grace that point to Jesus and weaving them into an immersive fiction experience. Although she and her husband have lived all over the country in their twenty-plus years of marriage, they currently call a little town south of Dallas, Texas their home.

Tirzah captured my interest and heart instantly. In six books, Connilynn has helped me make friends with all kinds of women--a former slave, a midwife, a scribe, and a disguised warrior, to name a few. I've loved each of her heroines and Tirzah fit right in with the group. As Connilynn notes in her discussion questions, Tirzah bat Darek is a typical youngest child--charming, determined to have her own way, stubborn and insolent at times. Yet she's also blisteringly intelligent, tough, and the quickest thinker I've seen in Biblical literature in awhile. Were she real, I'd beg her to teach me some of her tricks. Her scenes as a spy were some of my favorites.
A woman like Tirzah needed an incredible hero, and Liyam fits the bill perfectly. Like Tirzah and the secondary characters, I wanted him to let go of his thirst for vengeance, but Liyam also won my sympathy. I should point out, sympathy is not pity, though. Liyam is all man, and I loved the contrast between his mercenary personality and how gentle and merry he could be with Tirzah and others, especially children. I'll remember the moment Tirzah discovered his smile for a long time. I also loved their banter and interactions as a couple, like their slingshot-shooting contest. Connilynn does a great job of sprinkling calm moments of character development among the tension of a war-driven plot.
Speaking of the plot, every thread works. To borrow from Tirzah and Moriyah, it has a rich "flavor profile" like a honey date cake (though I personally would've added chocolate to that). ;) Connilynn sprinkled in just enough surprises to keep me guessing, and took the trajectory of Tirzah and Liyam's relationship down some unexpected paths. I wasn't entirely on board with how they first met--rape is never romantic, fake or not. But knowing who Connilynn is and how she feels about modern and ancient sex slavery, I'd say she's the only author I know who could pull that off. I also enjoyed revisiting Kedesh and seeing how Tirzah's story worked so well within the tapestry of her family.
The secondary characters in Like Flames in the Night are wonderful too, especially Odeleya. Tirzah didn't strike me as the type to show sympathy to a lost preteen girl, so I enjoyed the depth Odeleya brought to her character. As noted, it was also great to reunite with old favorite characters and meet some new ones. I'm curious about how those Aramean wives will finish their journeys, especially if they will ever embrace Yahweh.
Speaking of Yahweh, the spiritual thread here might be my favorite of any Connilynn Cossette has ever done. I can only hope and pray to be as bold as Tirzah was, and I loved how her moments with the Levites fed so much into her spiritual journey and character development. I could just picture Yahweh holding her on His lap and saying, "Abba is so proud of you." And that reference to the Deliverer, that little wink to the New Testament--wonderful! If you haven't read this yet, what are you waiting for? Snap it up and get lost in it!
Tirzah and Liyam's story is a beautiful finish to what Connilyn started. To have a family filled with such grace, redemption, forgiveness, love, and mercy is such a beautiful thing. And all the new family members they collected along the way because of how they showed the Father's love to everyone around them is so heart-touching. Each and every story had it's very real and hard struggles along the way. This was quite the time to be living in and Connilyn portrays that well, but this family did not let the obstacles they faced get in their way of being exactly who God called them to be to their city and those around them. It was absolutely beautiful from page one to the very end. I will miss all these characters dearly. Tirzah, the warrior, touched my heart and Liyam's support (and her older brothers too) for her is unrivaled. This may be my favorite book of the series and I feel like I say that about each one after I finish it, but that's because each one is so uniquely good and collectively one of the best series I've read in quite some time. Thank you Connilyn for what you created in these characters and stories.

the majority of this book i loved. the plot was actually interesting and kept me invested; not just the individual character’s growth and learning of Yahweh and themselves, but the overall story and plot.
the characters, both old and new, are forever close to my heart now. i can truly say i laughed and cried with them - indeed, the corners of my eyes still sting from the ending.
i loved how, especially at the end, we (and by “we” i mean Liyam and Tirzah) were faced with beautiful, unchanging, relevant attributes of Yahweh — of how His mercy and His justice works, of how He is all we will ever need, of how He sustains us. and maybe that’s the reason i ended up loving this book and not just enjoying it — it brought me face to face with sentences i am currently learning, that i could take to heart.
so, yes, i enjoyed the action and the intrigue, the way we followed this war with aram and the parts everyone played in it. i enjoyed the two perspectives, i enjoyed the individual storylines... i even enjoyed the love story (though i skimmed parts of the romantic stuff cuz why).
just to balance my review: yes, parts were predictable, and yes, christian authors seem to fixate on the “clean” aspects of romance (that emotional tension bla bla) and i find that annoying for very valid reasons i won’t get into right now. but overall?
overall, with the immersive, detailed world painted for us through the eyes of real, tangible characters, with their stories that weave in and out of glorious truths, this was a great ending to a good series, and i am glad to have read it.
xxx.
Had to delve into the next and then the next and just knew that the story wasn't finished until I came to the end of this one.. Thanking His Eminence The Holy Spirit 🙌🏾 for giving the author such a creative way of bringing Christ to light. Thank you Connilyn for being obedient.. These books aren't just stories; they're lights in the dark for anyone who'd like to get a better understanding of what the cities of refuge meant and Who 'Christ our Refuge', IS..
Eagerly awaiting your next exposition of scripture that might easily be dismissed without understanding
