Like Flames in the Night is another engrossing adventure enriched by a splendid historical narrative and deep spirituality. For fans of Biblical fiction, Cossette's novels are not to be missed!"--Historical Novels Review

A vivid, inspiring journey, not easily forgotten.

A vivid, inspiring journey, not easily forgotten.
The SettingSet in a time when God’s Chosen People had surrendered to idol worship, and subsequent oppression under Aramean rule, Like Flames in the Night follows two spies whose mission is to infiltrate the house of the commander who controls the Aramean army. These Arameans had enslaved and killed many of the Hebrews in their own land, but it’s up to the main characters to sew the seeds of faith once more, encourage the people to rise up in faith, overthrow the enemy, and retake the inheritance promised them by Yahweh. The CharactersWe sympathize with the hero and heroine from the beginning due to their painful pasts. Liyam, a redheaded, half-Canaanite, half-Hebrew warrior sets out for revenge against the Moabite trader who killed his daughter. Tirzah, daughter of the fiercest trainer of spies in Israel’s army, is now widowed and grieving miscarried pregnancies, searching for self-worth in her quest to turn the tide in the fight for her nation’s survival. Connilyn seamlessly weaves in characters from previous books as well, updating the reader on different families introduced throughout the series. I loved getting to see these old friends and their continued commitment to the growth they experienced in their own stories. The PlotThe first plot point hinges on a controversial, and admittedly disturbing step for Liyam’s character, one he defends while still entrenched in his flaws, but which never seems to incur serious consequences. Otherwise, I enjoyed the twists and turns of this story. I love when a book surprises me with plot twists. Some developments I saw coming. Others, I didn’t. And that made me smile, because I know this is a difficult thing authors work hard for, and Connilyn makes it look so easy and smooth. With each new switchback, my heart pounded in hopes the characters would overcome, or at least survive, the challenge. I tend to bite my lip when the stakes are high in a book I'm reading and...let’s just say after reading this book, I don’t think I’ll need a lip exfoliator for a long time. :)The RomanceThough Liyam and Tirzah’s first meeting is not without its challenges, these two skilled spies are well matched, both hearts brimming with courage while running from deeply buried pain. Their flaws hinder their mission and their growing relationship as he clings to his need for revenge and she to her need to prove her worth. On the other hand, Liyam challenges Tirzah to have faith and make wise choices while she encourages him to smile again, to live in light of the blessings God has given him.The Spiritual ThreadAbove the gripping plots, unique characterization, sweet love stories, and complex character webs, the spiritual content of Connilyn’s books is what draws me back time and again. I found myself connecting to both Liyam and Tirzah in their faith-journeys from revenge to forgiveness, from insecurity to identity, from latent unbelief to fearless, conquering faith. I loved the through-line of challenging God’s people to rise up in faith and live out what they claim to believe, throwing off complacency, fear, and idolatry to engage in the spiritual fight under the banner of the Almighty.*The publisher provided me with a complimentary copy of this title, and I have stated my honest opinion.

Wow! What a beautifully written and inspiring series this was. Connilyn Cossette not only brought the Bible to life through her books, but she helped light a flame in me, especially with Moriyah’s and Tirzah’s stories (my two favorites). I won’t give any spoilers, so I will leave that thought there…if you’re thinking about reading any of Connilyn’s books, just do it! They are phenomenal and do not stray from the Word of God.

I have never been so captivated by biblical novels and read them so quickly as I have since starting to read through Connilyn's books. She creates such fully-developed characters and scenarios that I have a hard time putting my current book aside to go to work. I highly recommend this series of books to anyone who enjoys the Messianic history of our Christian Jewish roots!!!

What a great title, Like Flames in the Night, for this 4th & final book of the Cities of Refuge series by Cossette! This series of connected novels has been a joy to read. The research done for the setting of this ancient time of the Hebrews was wonderful in each book. There is drama & romance. There is heartbreak & hard, evil hearts. But God cannot be defeated, nor do His plans fail. The devotion to God’s ways & the trust displayed by His people through the characters in these books displays a true example for us to follow. Thank you Connilyn Cossette!

Connilynn Cossette ends her second series with a bang! This time, she takes readers deep into the wars of the Biblical Judges era, pairing a red-haired, Yahweh-fearing mercenary of Canaanite heritage with a bold, cheeky Hebrew spy. The combination is delicious, and the plot pops like only those in the best books do.

Tirzah captured my interest and heart instantly. In six books, Connilynn has helped me make friends with all kinds of women--a former slave, a midwife, a scribe, and a disguised warrior, to name a few. I've loved each of her heroines and Tirzah fit right in with the group. As Connilynn notes in her discussion questions, Tirzah bat Darek is a typical youngest child--charming, determined to have her own way, stubborn and insolent at times. Yet she's also blisteringly intelligent, tough, and the quickest thinker I've seen in Biblical literature in awhile. Were she real, I'd beg her to teach me some of her tricks. Her scenes as a spy were some of my favorites.

A woman like Tirzah needed an incredible hero, and Liyam fits the bill perfectly. Like Tirzah and the secondary characters, I wanted him to let go of his thirst for vengeance, but Liyam also won my sympathy. I should point out, sympathy is not pity, though. Liyam is all man, and I loved the contrast between his mercenary personality and how gentle and merry he could be with Tirzah and others, especially children. I'll remember the moment Tirzah discovered his smile for a long time. I also loved their banter and interactions as a couple, like their slingshot-shooting contest. Connilynn does a great job of sprinkling calm moments of character development among the tension of a war-driven plot.

Speaking of the plot, every thread works. To borrow from Tirzah and Moriyah, it has a rich "flavor profile" like a honey date cake (though I personally would've added chocolate to that). ;) Connilynn sprinkled in just enough surprises to keep me guessing, and took the trajectory of Tirzah and Liyam's relationship down some unexpected paths. I wasn't entirely on board with how they first met--rape is never romantic, fake or not. But knowing who Connilynn is and how she feels about modern and ancient sex slavery, I'd say she's the only author I know who could pull that off. I also enjoyed revisiting Kedesh and seeing how Tirzah's story worked so well within the tapestry of her family.

The secondary characters in Like Flames in the Night are wonderful too, especially Odeleya. Tirzah didn't strike me as the type to show sympathy to a lost preteen girl, so I enjoyed the depth Odeleya brought to her character. As noted, it was also great to reunite with old favorite characters and meet some new ones. I'm curious about how those Aramean wives will finish their journeys, especially if they will ever embrace Yahweh.

Speaking of Yahweh, the spiritual thread here might be my favorite of any Connilynn Cossette has ever done. I can only hope and pray to be as bold as Tirzah was, and I loved how her moments with the Levites fed so much into her spiritual journey and character development. I could just picture Yahweh holding her on His lap and saying, "Abba is so proud of you." And that reference to the Deliverer, that little wink to the New Testament--wonderful! If you haven't read this yet, what are you waiting for? Snap it up and get lost in it!

I thought I recognized Liyam's name coming into this book, but I read this series (and her Out Of Egypt books) so quickly I couldn't remember which story he was from. I absolutely love how Connilyn connects all of her characters and this family together! She is beyond talented and I am so excited to have read this entire series. It has been an absolutely beautiful journey from the first book of Out of Egypt until this last book in Cities of Refuge. I may have come on this series once it was already finished, but I am thankful for that because I got to binge-read them and that made me so enwrapped in this entire storyline that I felt like I had to lay a piece of myself down, too, when the series ended because I just wanted to join this special family myself. Connilyn is such an amazing storyteller and I am excited to read all the books I can get my hands on by her. I absolutely recommend this series (as well as Out of Egypt).

Tirzah and Liyam's story is a beautiful finish to what Connilyn started. To have a family filled with such grace, redemption, forgiveness, love, and mercy is such a beautiful thing. And all the new family members they collected along the way because of how they showed the Father's love to everyone around them is so heart-touching. Each and every story had it's very real and hard struggles along the way. This was quite the time to be living in and Connilyn portrays that well, but this family did not let the obstacles they faced get in their way of being exactly who God called them to be to their city and those around them. It was absolutely beautiful from page one to the very end. I will miss all these characters dearly. Tirzah, the warrior, touched my heart and Liyam's support (and her older brothers too) for her is unrivaled. This may be my favorite book of the series and I feel like I say that about each one after I finish it, but that's because each one is so uniquely good and collectively one of the best series I've read in quite some time. Thank you Connilyn for what you created in these characters and stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars my favourite of the series

this one ... this one was my favourite of the whole series, of all the books this author has gifted to us.

the majority of this book i loved. the plot was actually interesting and kept me invested; not just the individual character’s growth and learning of Yahweh and themselves, but the overall story and plot.

the characters, both old and new, are forever close to my heart now. i can truly say i laughed and cried with them - indeed, the corners of my eyes still sting from the ending.

i loved how, especially at the end, we (and by “we” i mean Liyam and Tirzah) were faced with beautiful, unchanging, relevant attributes of Yahweh — of how His mercy and His justice works, of how He is all we will ever need, of how He sustains us. and maybe that’s the reason i ended up loving this book and not just enjoying it — it brought me face to face with sentences i am currently learning, that i could take to heart.

so, yes, i enjoyed the action and the intrigue, the way we followed this war with aram and the parts everyone played in it. i enjoyed the two perspectives, i enjoyed the individual storylines... i even enjoyed the love story (though i skimmed parts of the romantic stuff cuz why).

just to balance my review: yes, parts were predictable, and yes, christian authors seem to fixate on the “clean” aspects of romance (that emotional tension bla bla) and i find that annoying for very valid reasons i won’t get into right now. but overall?

overall, with the immersive, detailed world painted for us through the eyes of real, tangible characters, with their stories that weave in and out of glorious truths, this was a great ending to a good series, and i am glad to have read it.

xxx.

I devoured this book, almost in one sitting, after waiting a long time for it to finally be released. There are so many lessons to be gleaned from the whole series that I don't really know where to begin. Maybe the most important is the call to excercises mercy on those who "sin against me". It has become so apparent to me that I have no right whatsoever to withhold mercy anyone, considering my own behavior much of the time. Mercy seems to be developing into a part of my character nowadays

Wow wow wow, I have read all Connilyn's books in the Cities of Refuge series and they were all wonderful but this one, oh I just could not put it down, so much suspense as Tirzah goes as a spy into the enemy and not only is it a great book full of suspense it makes you feel as if you are right there, in the Old Testament, in a time when the people were disobedient to God land he allowed them to be captured. This book is one of the very best I have ever read and I have read hundreds of books. You will not be disappointed, I promise.
