The old Corpse Bridge is the route taken for centuries by mourners from villages on the western fringes of Derbyshire to a burial ground across the River Dove, now absorbed into the landscaped parkland of a stately home. When Earl Manby, the landowner, announces plans to deconsecrate the burial ground to turn it into a car park for his holiday cottages, bodies begin to appear once again on the road to the Corpse Bridge. Is there a connection with the Earl's plans? Or worse, is there a terrifying serial killer at work?

Back in his job after the traumatic events of previous months, Detective Sergeant Ben Cooper knows that he must unravel the mystery of the Corpse Bridge if he's going to be able to move on with his life. As the pressure builds, Ben doesn't know who he can trust and, when the case reaches breaking point, he has to make a call that could put everything - and everyone - at risk...

I really am enjoying this series by Stephen Booth. The descriptions of the hills, moors, lime quarries and towns are excellent. The characters are all growing and changes to their lives are happening.

The mysteries are sometimes hard to figure out ... This one had a lot of possibilities as to who actually did what - some unexpected twists and turns but in the end it all comes together.

I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys mysteries taking place in a village away from the big cities...there's no blatant sex scenes, no foul language and not too much blood and gore.

Another very comfortable crime mystery in the Cooper/Fry series. Mr Booth excels in his descriptions of the Yorkshire landscapes and of the many quirky characters that inhabit the olde worlde villages and cottages. Not a 'page-turner' or one night reader but rather a relaxing re-visit to a familiar country with all the known characters - Ben Cooper, Diane Fry, Gavin, and others. Ben Cooper in particular must be the most likeable and uncomplicated character in all of crime fiction....everyone's favourite brother, son, or friend. Diane Fry, on the other hand.........??,a very complex character - an excellent foil to Ben's basic decency. Oh, yes , the plot? Several red herrings, sub-plots, and lots of those quirky characters to maintain the reader's interest.
A brilliantly handled twist at the end was totally in keeping with the characters involved ( and something I had been expecting since about book 4 in the series) - but where to now Mr Booth?

Stephen Booth is back on form with "The Corpse Bridge" after his previous book was spoilt by over-indulgence in Ben Cooper's depression at the expense of the mystery story. In this story Ben is coming back to "normal", still grieving, but coping with his work.
Booth excels at weaving real places with invented ones, but always keeps true to his beloved Derbyshire. Ben's local knowledge and sense of the past helps to create atmosphere and contributes to the solving of the case. Booth has already set me up for his next book, as I'm already wondering where he will take the relationship between Cooper and Fry!

I really enjoy this series from Stephen Booth. Like so many of us, Cooper and Fry are imperfect characters yet righteous in their beliefs and conduct. The last few installments could use a little more Fry, though. Coupled with a fantastic landscape with a rich history, the surroundings leap from the pages in astounding visualizations and emotion. After finishing a story, the reader is often left with the feeling that the best is yet to come for this compelling, and addictive, mystery series.

Booth seems to have forgotten that several books ago, he had Diane Fry trade in her Peugeot for an Audi because he has her driving the Peugeot again. Then he compounds this goof by putting her back in the Audi later in the book. Doesn’t Mr. Booth (or anyone) proofread or fact/continuity check his work?

Diane Fry’s ‘better than everyone’ attitude is really starting to grind on me. In book #7 (Scared To Live) and book #8 (Dying To Sin), Booth seemed to be softening it but lately he’s turning her back into the aloof, self-centered woman she was in the first books in the series. It’s hard to like such a character because she isn’t interesting, she’s annoying. I’ve wondered on more than one occasion why one of the other characters hasn’t smacked her upside the head and said, “Get over yourself, girl!” There are, however, some hints here that such a change may be coming.

Booth still devotes too many pages to describing scenery and Ben’s and Diane’s interior monologs. Readers like to know the world around the characters and what they are thinking, but not to the depth Booth goes. This 401 page book could have been cut down to around 300 by trimming all three to the bare essentials.

On the plus side, Booth always creates an interesting mystery (but it’s a little on the thin side in this book) that outweighs the shortcomings in other areas of his writing.

I have really enjoyed all of the Cooper and Fry novels and this is my favorite. As always, the countryside and people and characters drive the story, but this time the background and the legends were the stars. It was fascinating to learn so much of the history of the area and to see how it fit so well with the mystery. The author does a great job and I would recommend the entire series.

Good writing, good detail. Took several books in the series for the characters to break out of their "usual" characterizations. Thankfully, at the end of the latest book in this series, there seems to be some real growth. DS Fry is still rather frustrating though -- she needs to break out and grow more. Still, I am enjoying this series and want to see where the author goes with the characters.

This whole series is an intriguing and fascinating read. I love the atmosphere that the landscape and history give to the stories. Start with book one and enjoy.

Mr. Booth's books are about a journey. Along the way is the crime - but the book is more than a traditional who done it. He brings you into the surroundings and into the characters heads. Leaves you wanting to continue the journey - but alas you have to wait for his next book.

Well I never! Usual twists, descriptions of the scenery& characters, good subplots blah blah blah. Look out guys! That female colleague that always puts you down and makes you feel stupid, learn from Ben! Don't let her put her TV in the back of your car! Oh err!
Seriously, it had to happen one day, she's been hankering after him since Black Dog. But did she get her wicked way..............?
the metaphors of the dead being carried and then finally laid to rest were not missed, another great book. Will we have to wait another year? Can't he write faster? Come on Mr Booth, get a wriggle on.
