The Limbo Ladies (Magna Large Print General Series) Hardcover – Large Print, March 1, 1993

3.6 3.6 out of 5 stars 24 ratings

Hurst & Blackett, , (1969). Ex-library with the usual markings, some spine slant and soiling to the edges of the trexblock, but overall good condition in a good dust jacket. Many of Yorke's early books are found most readily as ex-library copies, a fact which is not surprising when one realizes that she was presented with the Golden Handcuffs award by the British library service for becoming the most-borrowed author.. First printing. The 'limbo ladies' are women excluded from English social life because they are widowed, divorced (as is Sarah Marston, the heroine of this novel) or unmarried. A stand alone novel by this prolific British crime novelist, this emphasizes how Sarah comes to value her own strength and independence. 184 pp.

Margaret Yorke is one of the most renowned British female authors of the mystery novel. She was born in Surrey but she spent her childhood in Dublin, Ireland before moving to England in 1937. During World War II she worked as a driver for the Women's Royal Naval service, and after the war she became the first woman to work in Christ Church library, Oxford.

She served as Chairman of the Crime Writer's association between 1979 and 1980, and went on to win the 1993 Golden Handcuffs award, a prize given to the UK's most popular crime writer. She was also awarded the CWA Cartier Diamond Dagger in 1999.

Unlike the psychological mysteries by Margaret York's, this is more of a romance. Not bad but I was expecting her usual genre.

I'm trying to get my hands on every book Margaret Yorke has ever written. This is one of her earlier ones. I'm thrilled to have found it.

I normally love Margaret Yorke, but this book was not worth the time it took to turn the pages!
