A fashion magazine features editor, Leah McDevitt is haunted by the memory of her cherished younger sister, Melissa, who vanished years ago. Missy, whose extraordinary eyes -- one blue, one brown -- may have lured her abductor to her....When Leah receives a letter from death row inmate Raymond Lambert, she eagerly agrees to pay him the long-standing reward for information about Melissa -- even if it means coming face-to-face with a notorious serial killer.
But before Lambert can impart his secrets, he himself is killed. Devastated but determined, Leah heads to the Maine woods to seek out private investigator Ethan Sanger, who authored a book about Lambert in exchange for yet another of Lambert's terrible secrets. Leah and Ethan strike a sparking passion with the power to heal their painful pasts. But someone has his eye on Leah...someone who knows more than he should...and who won't be satisfied until Leah sees the truth with her own eyes.

About the author
Mariah Stewart is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of romance, romantic suspense, and women’s fiction. Her current contemporary romance series, the Chesapeake Diaries, is set in the fictional town of St. Dennis on Maryland’s Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, about which #1 bestselling author Robyn Carr says “rich characterizations, a charming setting, and romances you’ll never forget will have you packing your bags for St. Dennis”. She’s also the author of nineteen bestselling romantic suspense novels, including the MERCY STREET, DEAD, TRUTH, and LAST series and the classic stand-alones, BROWN-EYED GIRL and VOICES CARRY. A native of Hightstown, New Jersey, she lives and gardens amidst the rolling hills of southern Chester County, PA, with her husband and a couple of rambunctious rescue dogs. She's the mother of two grown daughters – a psychologist and a prosecutor – and the grandmother of some of the cutest kids on the planet. In past lives, she's been a teacher and an insurance executive, but knows she's found the perfect job: sitting in her sunny office in old sweats and flip flops, making up stories and the characters who live in them, and getting paid for it. Life could not be sweeter.

Leah McDevitt lost a sister, Melissa seven years earlier. She disapeared without a trace and the police suspected foul play but could never prove it since they didn't have a body. Leah makes an appearance on a t.v. show dealing with survivors who have lost someone to crime. During the show, she confirms that the $50,000 reward is still open until she finds out what happens to her sister. Enter into the picture, Raymond Lambert, a convicted serial killer about to be executed. He offers information about Melissa if Leah will pay the reward money to him. Lambert has one vital piece of information that convinces Leah that he knows what happened to Melissa. Before Leah can transfer money into his account, he is killed on death row by another inmate. Not knowing where to turn, Leah contacts Ethan Sanger, the author of a book about Lambert. Sanger doesn't want to get involved. Lambert had left his mark on Ethan years before. Leah convinces him to help not knowing their world is about to come crashing down around them.
Brown-Eyed Girl is beautifully written and keeps your attention. I would have given this book a five except there were times that it was a little too obvious what was coming. However, this is one sharp book. Read it, you'll enjoy it.
Surprisingly, it held up pretty well. Despite it being set in 2000, the signs of the times didn't show too badly. There were cell phones but no talks of tracing calls or pinging cell phone towers. But even without all the fancy technology we have now (in 2021), in the novel the FBI and people who were being hunted by bad guys, were able to do their own investigating and I was able to keep up with the story.
It's well written and has a good mystery that kept me interested in the outcome. The romance is sweet and because both hero and heroine have had immense tragedy in their lives, it makes sense that they would fall for each other. They can understand each other.
There's one mildly detailed sex scene, a small bit of language but not much and some violence. There are discussions of murderer and sexual abuse, though there are no on page scenes of that abuse.
