The Night Boat Mass Market Paperback – October 1, 1988

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 568 ratings

A German submarine is sunk during World War Two. How do you turn this gimmick into a horror novel? Which direction do you go? What's the creep factor? Robert McCammon, who took the premise of vampires in Los Angeles to its natural conclusion by having half the city turned into vampires and unleashed an Allied werewolf loose on a secret Nazi base, can be counted on to accomplish the task. The raising of the Nazi submarine is central to McCammon's story which delivers surprising twists and bloody confrontations. The U-boat was sunk off a Caribbean island, but under circumstances that leave it largely intact until a diver accidentally dislodges an unexploded depth charge which lets the sand-covered sub bob to the surface. This could result in a nice sale to museum. But soon, it's decided the sub would be better off back in the Big Drink. The problem is, see, the crew is not dead, thanks to a voodoo curse.

One of my favorite authors. Enjoyed this book but just didn’t love it. Characters and scenery and story are all good but just not great. Kinda anticlimactic ending. Definitely worth a read but he has spoiled me over the years with better books.

This is an interesting book and a fairly quick read. McCammon builds the suspense, as he always does, but by bit. And the final pages bring it all together for a very satisfying conclusion. I recommend anything this guy writes.

I enjoyed this book. It could be somewhat better with a little more interaction between the islanders and the Caribs but it was still goof

Fast-paced and much gorier than most of the other books of his I've read. (That's a compliment, by the way). And he took a subject that could so easily have descended into a trite cliche and made it fresh and exciting, which is no mean feat. I won't say what the subject was because no spoilers. Thoroughly enjoyable.

The premise may seem a bit contrived at first, but it pans out. Great characterization, mega-realistic scenes and excellent emotional overtones make this an enjoyable read.

This was one of McCammon's first books and, while his writing had not progressed to the level it is now, it was raw and a fun read. He is a first rate story teller, one of the best. I have read this book before, back when it was first released. I simply wanted the hard cover edition for my collection. The book came to me quickly in very good condition as described.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent U boat horror novel

Some claim this is the low end of McCammon's work but I quite enjoyed it. It did get a bit predictable in the end but it was well fleshed out and the Characters had substance if some were a little cliched. Being a u-boat nut the picking are few in horror so quite liked the effort. Definitely well written

Zuerst ein wenig langsam, aber am Ende wird es echt spannend. Vielleicht ein Buch, das ich in ein paar Jahren erneut lesen werde.
