About the author

My literary career has been marked by a number of events, but none more significant than an accidental meeting 25 years ago. While researching my debut novel, FALSE ACCUSATIONS, at the Department of Justice's crime lab, I met FBI agent Mark Safarik, who was awaiting promotion to the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit--the one popularized by TV's Criminal Minds. We hit it off, stayed in touch, and Agent Safarik invited me out to Quantico to tour the FBI Academy, profiling unit, and Behavioral Sciences Unit. Thus began my immersion in the world of serial killers, rapists, bombers, and arsonists.
Seven years and several trips to Quantico later, my education had reached critical mass: I had countless hours of conversations with Agent Safarik and his partner, Agent Mary Ellen O'Toole; I edited four published FBI research papers on serial offenders and attended numerous FBI training courses; I shot submachine guns with the head firearms instructor at the Academy; and I parsed serial killer interviews with Agent Safarik. I felt that I owned the material well enough to use this knowledge and experience in writing my third novel, the first featuring FBI Profiler Karen Vail. Agent O’Toole provided prescient insight into what Vail’s experience would be like as a woman going up against violent male killers.
Vail had an explosive debut, bursting onto the scene in the national bestseller THE 7TH VICTIM. Sporting a vibrant personality oozing sharp wit, Vail is a woman bucking the odds in a unit geared toward men, someone who always means well but, like you and me, makes mistakes. She has fears, loves, and vulnerabilities--and despite being very good at what she does--suffers perpetual unease about the decisions she makes. Because lives are on the line. Errors prove costly.
There's little doubt that Vail has resonated with hundreds of thousands of readers because she's real. But at the end of the day, Karen Vail is a cop you'd "go through a door with." That's how law enforcement officers of all stripes describe a colleague you'd entrust your life to when bullets are flying. Not coincidentally, that's how the head of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers association described Karen Vail.
Vail also plays a key role in my OPSIG Team Black series, which features a secret group of operatives charged with protecting America’s interests anywhere in the world. But—they’re carrying out these missions black, meaning they’re on their own diplomatically and militarily; the US government won’t acknowledge any connection to them. This gives me tremendous creative control in developing a story, turning up the suspense, conflict, and action. Navy SEALs have commented that my OPSIG series accurately depicts the reality of the missions they undertake--something I take great pride in. My two-plus decades of research and training with law enforcement and the military have helped shape the stories I tell and the diverse characters I create.
So sit back, crack the spine--or click that button--and immerse yourself in the gripping world of "Alan Jacobson thrillers."
Note--Agent Safarik and I coauthored a personal safety book, which we’re giving away free on my website, alanjacobson.com. It'll help keep your loved ones out of the crosshairs of violent criminals--and nothing could be more important than that.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2014False Accusations is about a prominent orthopedic doctor in California - Phillip Madison - who gets arrested one day for suspicion of murdering a young couple in a deadly hit and run incident the night before. All of the evidence points to him as being the murderer, including the key weapon used in the homicides - his damaged Mercedes S600 - which was sitting in his garage with blood spatter, hair and fibers from the victims all over it. Further compounding the murder charges being laid over him, Madison is also accused of rape by one of his former employees at a non-profit organization. As everything gets steadily worse, Madison and his attorney friend, Jeffrey Hellman, enlist the help of a N.Y. detective friend, Ryan Chandler, to help out with the case which goes a long way in helping out the hellish case.
You can't help but think of the movie, The Fugitive (1993) with Harrison Ford as Dr. Richard Kimble in it while you're reading this book. He, too, is accused of murdering someone in the movie (his wife) and goes out of his way to prove his innocence and reclaim his reputation as he knows who the killer is. Of course, the book has twice as many twists and turns than the movie ever had.
Overall, False Accusations was highly enjoyable with its fast pace, interesting cast of characters, action, suspense, and emotional intensity involved. It is so diabolical in its dark twists and turns, that you wouldn't know what is going to happen next. Everything is not exactly what it seems, leading to a surprising and shocking finish at the end which is almost unexpected. The ending, as another reviewer had mentioned, was entirely disappointing. This is one of the best psychological thrillers that I've read in awhile and would highly recommend it to any suspense/thriller book lovers out there. I still feel the shock from the book reverberating though me, long after I've put the book down. False Accusations will, no doubt, be on my book shelves for life.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2014I'll start off by saying I dislike books that make someone in the wrong, who shouldn't be, and I guess the book title here should of been a solid hint of what it was about, but I bought it anyway as I'd enjoyed other books by this author. And I'm very glad I did, the more I got into the book, the more it was hard to stop reading, in fact I read it in one go. The story is well written, easy to read, and very enjoyable. I did realize a little 'trick' shall we say about 1/2 way through, which I was right about, but I can't say what that was without ruining the book. Well worth a read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2012I love Alan Jacobson's work! I'd read all of the Karen Vail books available (I hope he does more!) and after reading 2 books by other authors with characters I didn't like, I decided I'd read Jacobson's first, to hopefully get the bad taste of those other 2 books out. This book did that and then some! A great story that makes you think and I haven't read an ending of a book that's given me goose bumps like that since I read 1984. Yeah, I'm favorably comparing his first book to a classic. It was that good!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2015I wanted to give this book 5 stars ... but I can't. It starts off really good .. the middle is really good, but then it goes on and on and on and on. I honestly think this book should have been about 100 pages shorter. All in all, a decent book, I recommend reading it, but be prepared: it drags.
The ending was a bit over the top and if you miss read the last paragraph, or aren't concentrating you'll never get the twist. It's a blink and you'll miss it moment ... so pay attention.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2016The story started off with a bang and never let up. About a quarter of the way through I realized I had read the book black in 2000...but I was so engrossed with the storyline I couldn't put it down. Great read...
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2011I have read several of Alan Jacobson's books and have become an avid fan. When his first novel, False Accusations became available on Kindle, I snatched it up. Now, I read a few reviews and there were a few people saying how disappointed they were with the ending. Of course, I am not going to give it away, but I have to strongly disagree with them. I never saw the ending coming...and it is one of those that even a few days after finishing it I was still asking myself..."really?"....."omg, that's how it ends?"....."I can't believe it was him/her". I love a book that leaves me scratching my head, and thinking back through the book to clues I surely missed. This is a book I will read again! I absolutely loved False Accusations and if you want to read something that will keep you turning the pages, keep you second guessing yourself, keep you thinking....then this is the one for you! Thank you Mr. Jacobson for another great read!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2011I'm afraid that as much as I hate to do this, I am going to have to sue you for Alienation of Work Ethic. No matter that I'd read this before and I knew how it ended, I still couldn't put it down. The twists and turns you manage to put in the way of any logical guess work on your readers part started with your first book and has continued through this one and into and through all of the Karen Vail books. (Note to new readers ~ don't miss those, they are fantastic!)
Now that I've turned the last page and can no longer ignore the fact that I've ignored my reality for far too long and that no matter how much I want to open The 7th Victim again, I know I have to find my Work Ethic somewhere. So, it's back to work for me and for anyone reading this 'review', drop whatever you are doing and treat yourself to any and all of Alan Jacobson's impossible to put down books! They could be the best gift you give yourself this holiday season!
PS: Don't leave me alone with nothing to do but what has to get done, please get your next book into the stores soon! Thanks Alan!
