“Fresh and original . . . full of lush writing and detailed worldbuilding . . . [with a] rich fantasy landscape and an almost Shakespearean feel.”—Paste

Twins imbued with incredible magic and near-immortality will do anything to keep their family in power—even if it tears the family apart—in the first book of a mythic epic fantasy duology from the
New York Times bestselling author of Wilder Girls.

ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2022—BookPage

Rhea and Lexos were born into a family unlike any other. Together with their siblings, they control the seasons, the tides, and the stars, and help their father rule their kingdom. Thanks to their magic, the family has ruled for an eternity, and plan to rule for an eternity more.

But Rhea and Lexos are special: They are twins, bonded down to the bone, and for the past hundred years, that bond has protected them as their father becomes an unpredictable tyrant—and his worsening temper threatens the family’s grip on power.

Now, with rival nations ready to attack, and a rebel movement within their own borders, Rhea and Lexos must fight to keep the kingdom—and the family—together, even as treachery, deceit, and drama threaten to strand the twins on opposite sides of the battlefield.

In a Garden Burning Gold is a vividly written, atmospheric saga that explores the limits of power and the bonds of family—and how far both can be bent before they break.

A Twist on Greek Mythology

A Twist on Greek Mythology
I received a digital advance copy of In a Garden Burning Gold by Rory Powers via NetGalley. In a Garden Burning Gold is scheduled for release on April 5, 2022.In a Garden Burning Gold follows Rhea and her twin brother Lexos. They live with their two younger siblings and their father as rulers of their small country. All of the family are near-immortal, and have the ability to control everything from the tides, to the stars, to the seasons. As Rhea starts the new winter season with a new consort, Lexos is working to maintain the control their family has over their country. Neither sibling fully understands the complications of what they are working for, and neither has the slightest clue what the other twin is up to.In this novel, Power gives us a very different world than Wilder Girls. This novel is infused with magic, and seems to be on the border of Greek mythology. While none of the characters in the story are established mythological figures, there are echoes of Greek myths in the characters, their powers, and their interactions with the world at large. For me, this closeness to Greek mythology made this a challenging read at times. I struggled at times as my brain tried to tie the novel into the Greek myths I know. When they didn’t fit together, it created a disconnect with the story as I fought to separate the world of the story from the world it did not quite belong in. I think I would have enjoyed the story more if there were more distance between the novel and Greek mythology.Power gives us four distinct siblings in this novel, though we get to know Rhea and Lexos the best. As they are both point of view characters in the novel, this makes sense. The distance from the siblings also makes sense, as they are not involved in the plots the older siblings are working through. This distance allows us as a reader to gain information about the younger siblings at the same time the older siblings do. The result is some twists in the story that took me by surprise.Overall, In a Garden Burning Gold is a well-written and enjoyable story drawing on many aspects of Greek mythology.

It took me a while to read this because I was reading it in between other books, but every single time I picked it up, I instantly became invested in the world all over again. The characters, the magic system, the hidden histories waiting to be discovered, I loved all of it. I guess I could talk about its flaws of which there are a few, but I refuse to, because I just loved this book so much. I will read the next one, just as a way to return to this amazing world.

Favorite Quote: She could protect him, or she could do what was right. But she was sure now that she could not do both.

Story Synopsis: Twins Rhea and Lexos do their part daily for the family legacy. Unlike other families, they live for an exceptionally long time, and each family member has a unique power to wield. In a Garden Burning Gold shares the perspectives of Rhea and Lexos as they make choices to help the family, and their country, while trying to find themselves along the way.

Why does this book beguile? In a Garden Burning Gold is full of intrigue and high-stakes politics in a fantasy realm. Rhea and Lexos have a power-hungry father and two siblings who play large roles in this book. Rory Power does an excellent job of world-building with the various kingdoms, countries, customs, and landscapes portrayed throughout the book. I enjoyed how this book is a complete story, even while being the first of a series. Power does an excellent job of leaving you wanting more of this story but also completing the events of this book.

This read is a tough one. There were a few aspects that I liked and many that niggled.

My first impression, right off the bat was: "who the hell ARE all of these people??" It felt like an IQ test that I was failing. Not only was it confusing but it was also rather boring. It did manage to find its pace after a (looong) while and it turned out to be an enjoyable foundation book... if you're into that sort of thing... first books where the pull is the setup... whose sole reason for existing is to build a solid foundation for book #2 to flourish in. If that sounds like your cuppa then you'll be excited because this story is a model example of all that. BUT be aware, it does not come off as a book that can stand on its own. Yes, there are political machinations, uneasy alliances, familial magic, toxic daddy issues and betrayl. It has all of that and still managed to feel a bit tedious. The genre it is labeled as is a bit deceiving too, it reads more as a YA book than Adult. Also, if you're the type of reader that likes to be immersed in a lush world where feelings are coaxed and compelled out of you due to the descriptive nature of the writing instead of being TOLD to feel then maybe this book isn't for you.

This book is primarily an Epic Fantasy who, on a very fundamental level, asks: What/how much does Family mean to you? Where are you willing to draw the line for yourself? The Greek political aspects were confusing so for ~ the first half of the book it felt like I showed up ready for a final exam and then BAM... what I studied was all the wrong material... never a good feeling! I was lost in the sauce. There were huge bouts of info dumping. I almost threw in the towel just from that alone.

Then there was the family drama whose dynamics felt off kilter especially with its disingenuous sibling interactions. For a family that had been in each other's gravity for nearly 100 years, it sure felt... off. The romantic subplot was a fail, mainly due to the PG interactions between "supposed" adults... one almost ancient yet still very adolescent.

Overall:
Rory Power writes pretty prose depicting disturbing family relations, creepy twisty turns (which I liked best) and 2 decent characters... the rest I couldn't care one whit about. The uneven pacing was distracting (to say the least) and then there was the massive info dumping... THAT was extremely frustrating! BUT when the story was good, it was great! It was exciting and made me want to know what was going to happen next. Too bad these sections weren't more abundant.

Don't let this review's vibe fool you though... this book's ending made HUGE retaliatory steps in the right direction... the setup for book #2 makes it seem like an epic followup is in the works. See?? A review that gives with one hand and takes away with the other. Oh well... I might be on the hunt for book #2... depends on what other books come out and catch my attention.

~ Enjoy

I love when a book surprises you and you become completely engaged with the story and its characters. That's exactly what happened here! Right from the start, I just wanted more of Rhea, Lexos, Michali, the magic, the history of the world, and all of the political moves and countermoves. Some terrific twists too!
The story is set in Thyzakos, a country ruled by the Argyros family and lead by Vasilis and is told through two POV's, Rhea and Alexandros(Lexos). They are Vasilis' oldest children and twins who are very close. As head of Thyzakos, the Stratagiozi, Vasilis has different powers that he passes on to each of his children. As the oldest, Lexos is Vasilis' heir and is responsible for the night sky, stars and tides. Rhea is the Thyspira, responsible for the changing of the seasons by taking a new consort at the beginning of each season and then killing them to end the season. Each family member is blessed with extremely long life span compared to regular citizens. There are, of course, parts of Thyzakos that are not fairing well and so are not happy with the Argyros rule. So as each member of the family schemes, plots and sets plans in motion, all seems to be coming apart both within the family and outside of the family. What a terrific world to be drawn into and I loved the world building. You can tell there is still so much more to see and learn about the magic and history and how it will impact the characters and their choices. If you enjoy complex fantasy worlds with characters that don't always make the best of choices, and lots of intrigue, pick this up!!

*First off I want to thank Random House and Netgalley for this arc*

I was so excited to get my hands on this release!

And let me tell you Powers writes beautifully. The prose is gorgeous.

The story itself is a spin on Greek Mythology and culture. And in this one we get saints and gods with powers.

I think I really struggled with the pacing on this one. It’s slow. And there is so much political intrigue that this isn’t a book to binge. Rather it’s a one to slowly savor. I found myself often reading a few chapters and putting it down and thinking about everything and then going back to it.

I did struggle to really connect with the characters. Every-time I felt like I connected with a character it changed POV.

Overall- I think if you’re looking for a beautiful read with political intrigue this is it.
