New York Times bestselling author Tami Hoag returns with a thriller that begins with a shocking crime scene you’ll never forget and follows two relentless detectives on a manhunt that ends in a chilling confrontation with the essence of human evil.

It was a crime so brutal, it changed the lives of even the most hardened homicide cops. The Haas family murders left a scar on the community nothing can erase, but everyone agrees that convicting the killer, Karl Dahl, is a start. Only Judge Carey Moore seems to be standing in the way. Her ruling that Dahl’s prior criminal record is inadmissible raises a public outcry—and puts the judge in grave danger.

When an unknown assailant attacks Judge Moore in a parking garage, two of Minneapolis’s top cops are called upon to solve the crime and keep the judge from further harm. Detective Sam Kovac is as hard-boiled as they come, and his wisecracking partner, Nikki Liska, isn’t far behind. Neither one wants to be on this case, but when Karl Dahl escapes from custody, everything changes, and a seemingly straightforward case cartwheels out of control.

The stakes go even higher when the judge is kidnapped—snatched out of her own bed even as the police sit outside, watching her house. Now Kovac and Liska must navigate through a maze of suspects that includes the stepson of a murder victim, a husband with a secret life, and a rogue cop looking for revenge where the justice system failed.

With no time to spare, the detectives are pulled down a strange dark trail of smoke and mirrors, where no one is who they seem and everyone is guilty of
Prior Bad Acts.

Tami Hoag is the #1 international bestselling author of more than thirty books published in more than thirty languages worldwide, including her latest thrillers--COLD COLD HEART and THE 9TH GIRL. Renowned for combining thrilling plots with character-driven suspense, Hoag first hit the New York Times Bestseller list with NIGHT SINS, and each of her books since has been a bestseller. She leads a double life in Palm Beach County, Florida where she is also known as a top competitive equestrian in the Olympic discipline of dressage. Other interests include the study of psychology, and mixed martial arts fighting. A woman of eclectic tastes, to say the least, Tami was recently asked to list seven things people may not know about about her: 1. I was once offered a job by a private investigator. 2. I have a license to carry concealed weapon, but never do. I took the course for research purposes. 3. My high school guidance counselor encouraged me to become an actress, but I thought that was too impractical (Of course, there's nothing practical about being a writer, either, but at least I'm not obligated to look good on a daily basis.) 4. I used to sing at weddings. 5. While I have no intention of ever getting married again, I love watching Say Yes To The Dress 6. I have legitimate knockout power in my right hand, and I'm not afraid to use it. 7. When I'm stressed out, all tech devices around me go haywire. I've stopped watches, and fried hard drives. I once killed a television in a store display by merely touching it. I'm better off sticking to life's simple pleasures--like books!

When Judge Carey Moore refuses to allow the prior bad acts of Karl Dahl, accused of committing the brutal murder of a mother and two young children, she is vilified by the police and newspapers as being soft on killers. But someone is even more angry and severely beats her and later threatens her. Detective Sam Kovac is assigned to the case along with his partner Nikki Liska. They, too, think the judge's ruling was wrong but the more they investigate the attack, the more layers to both Carey's beating and the original murder.

Ms. Hoag really knows how to create great characters. They are fully dimensional, interesting and realistic. She also knows how to write effective, real sounding dialogue. She effectively balances suspense, human tragedy on all levels and humor. The plot was a bit obvious, although it did have some complexity and good twists, as was the building relationship, but it was a good enough read not to mind. This, as are all Ms. Hoag's books, was solid, enjoyable, page-turning reading.

I had read the first book in this series, Ashes to Ashes, which I picked up at a little public library. I enjoyed the characters of Kovak and Liska, so I ordered this used paperback on Amazon. Kovak reminds me of Harry Bosch from the Michael Connelly books. I enjoyed the story, but (spoiler alert) the big surprise at the end I’d seen coming forever. The author gave way too many intentional hints, I don’t know how anyone could’ve missed The Who dunnit. The author also missed an opportunity to have another interesting surprise at the end. Spoiler: they should’ve discovered that the kid pushed his first adoptive mother down the stairs. But that wouldn’t have been a surprise, either. I’m totally surprised that this wasn’t “revealed”. Easy read, good characters.

I have been a Tami Hoag fan from her first book. I like both her romance and her mystery books but prefer the mystery now. Her characters, Sam Kovak and Nikki Liska are two of her best and I hope we see more of them in the future. I hope that Sam shows up with Judge Moore and Lucy as a permanent member of their family. He needs someone who loves him and so does Liska. Sam's interaction with Lucy was great as is his partnership with Liska. This book really had a lot going for it and not the least is the lesson that you cannot make judgements about guilt on anything until all of the facts are in. As is usual in her books, she had more than one storyline going. The loneliness that many people have, including the leading characters. The fine line that cops sometimes cross and become the bad guy rather than the good. How you can live with someone and not know what is really going on in their life like Carey's husband. Talk about a sleazeball. He didn't have to hire a hit man, if he really did, just his real business and his habits put his family at risk in several ways. I won't say anymore as I don't want to give away the real villan but I do think this was one of her very best books. I hated for it to end.

Tami Hoag is a master of suspense, coincidence, and deception. And there is plenty of that in this intense thriller. A drifter, Karl Dahl, takes cover in a house during a brutal storm. He discovers a horrific scene, in which a mother is brutally slain, and when he is in the basement, he is touched by a child hanging from the ceiling. He discovers two dead bodies. Later on, he is on trial for their brutal murder, and the prosecutor, Hogan, tries to admit into evidence Dahl's prior acts which include a large assortment of petty crimes and prior convictions. The public defender, Kenny Scott, challenges this in front of the judge, Carey Moore, who rules in favor of the defense that the prior bad acts are inadmissible. This sets off a series of events that includes Judge Moore being attacked in a garage by an unknown assailant, the original investigating detective, Stan Dempsey, turning rogue and eventually plotting his own brand of vigilante justice, and then the peculiar tale of Wayne and Bobby Haas, father and son who choose to continue to live in the house where the brutal murders tok place. Karl Dahl escapes from custody after being beaten up in prison and not being constrained on his way to the hospital, then embarks upon a journey of being a fugitive, complete with incidental crimes, that seemed ripped out of an Alfred Hitchcock tale. The reader will find out that there are a number of characters out to get Judge Moore. And Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska get to do the investigating. As is the case with many of her other books, the reader is taken along the paths of investigation, many of which misled the investigators, but eventually, due to their stubborn diligence, both Kovac and Liska eventually solve the crime. If you are a fan of Tami Hoag, you don't want to miss this one!

New to reading Tami Hoag and pleasantly surprised by her ability to keep the story moving and a page turner for sure. I love the twists and turns she throws in to keep the reader's full attention. The characters are realistic and well developed. I look forward to reading more of her novels that include Sam and Nikki as well as the other members of the force. She even includes some humorous statements just to break up the tension and give you a laugh despite the horror of crime.
