Purchase options and add-ons

There's a big mystery brewing among the animals of the Green Forest — and it's all because of a strange little creature with no head, legs, or tail that came rolling down a hill and gave Peter Cottontail the fright of his life. What could it be?
Young readers and listeners will love finding out about this and other interesting goings-on in the Forest as they learn how Prickly Porky made friends, what made Old Granny Fox lose her dignity, why Old Man Coyote lost his appetite, and more.
Written by master storyteller Thornton W. Burgess, this classic combines all the fun of a good story with gentle lessons about wildlife, the environment, and human virtues. It is reset here in large, easy-to-read type, enhanced by six full-page Harrison Cady illustrations that perfectly capture the mood of this charming tale.

This review is for the edition published by Dover. Unfortunately, all reviews appear under all editions, regardless of publisher.

This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. Plus, unlike many of these Dover editions of Thornton Burgess' books, it has honest-to-god original Harrison Cady illustrations.

Harrison Cady did two sets of drawings for this title:
-- Published by Little, Brown, with 6 full-page grayscale illustrations.
-- Published by Grosset & Dunlap, with 14 full-page line drawings, including line-drawing versions of all 6 original grayscale illustrations in the Little, Brown editions, plus many smaller line drawings.

This Dover edition has a weird hybrid: it has the 6 B&W drawings from the Grosset & Dunlap edition that were redrawings of the 6 grayscale illustrations in the Little, Brown edition.

If you're going to print the Grosset & Dunlap illustrations, why not print all 14 of them??? Weird. But the important thing is that they are real Cady drawings.

Anyway, kudos to Dover on getting basically it right for this title. And at such a low price!

If you like these illustrations, I'd recommend finding a used copy of the Grosset & Dunlap edition too, to get the other 8 drawings. A good place to look is AbeBooks dot com.

Lovely, entertaining, fun to read. If your child loves little animal critters, this series is for them. As a homeschool mom, I approve 100% Best yet, there are usually "moral of the story" endings that are as applicable today as they were 100 years ago

Great five minute stories that I remember reading as a kid and now I can start reading them to my daughter. Simple and easy to understand, many of the stories teach lessons about morals, instead of mindless blather. I am enjoying reading through the series again.

Loved these stories when I was a child. A special memory which I like to revisit from time to time.

You love Thornton Burgess or you don't. Fortunately Dover has reprinted (most?) of the books in the original style. Orginal editions are rare, very expensive and seldom in good condition; being too well loved.

I grew up on these and LOVED them! Never tired of hearing them over and over again. If you read to your children or grandchildren, you'll want them all.

This is the perfect read aloud for children of multiple ages. I've read this series for nearly 8 years to my 3 kids. It doesn't get old.

5.0 out of 5 stars livre pour enfants très intéressant mais mal illustré
Reviewed in France on August 26, 2012

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story to read aloud but be prepared to read it all to the end!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 19, 2012
Our kids loved listening to this story, as it unfolds the reader becomes aware of what the "mystery" is all about but the characters in the book (all forest creatures native to North America) are still clueless. They were chuckling so much at the storyline that they wanted to hear it all the way to the end! I very cruelly only read a chapter a day and they couldn't wait for the next instalment. Our kids are 6 and 4 but I'm sure it would entertain older children too.
