Wighard, Archbishop designate of Canterbury, has been found dead, garrotted in his chambers in Rome's Lateran Palace in the autumn of A.D. 664. His murderer seems apparent to all, since an Irish religieux was arrested by the palace guards as he fled Wighard's chamber, but the monk denies responsibility for the crime, and the treasures missing from Wighard's chambers are nowhere to be found. The bishop in charge of affairs at the Lateran Palace suspects a political motive and is wary of charging anyone without independent evidence. So he asks Sister Fidelma of the Celtic Church to look into Wighard's death. Fidelma (an advocate of the Brehon Court), working with Brother Eadulf of the Roman Church, quickly finds herself with very few clues, too many motives, a trail strewn with bodies - and very little time before the killer strikes again.

A great many years have passed since I have found any book to capture my attention as the Sister Fidelma mysteries by Peter Tremayne. I was looking for something new, different, a mystery that was a little off the beaten path and tested the waters with Whispers of the Dead. Don’t be put off by the word “Sister”. The books do discuss some theology and, at times, it can be a bit tiresome, but, oftentimes, that theology is a basis for the conflicts and mystery. Since then, I’ve purchased and read almost every book in the series. These mysteries contain colorful history, adventure, action, conflict, wonderfully portrayed places, a remarkable heroine, an equally remarkable companion, and a smidgen of romance. While each book is a self-contained mystery, they all (except the first in the series) contain snippets of previous adventures, so you’ll find it much more satisfying to see the characters grow and better understand the events that have caused them to grow. Why the Irish Film Board has yet to make these into a DVD set like the Cadfael series is another mystery. Hopefully it would do better at retaining figures central to the plots and remain more true to the story than in the Cadfael series.

This second Sister Fidelma mystery read much easier than the first. Perhaps because it takes place in Rome and perhaps because we learned a lot (like a distracting a lot) in the first, this book was much less cumbersome to read. Yes I still learned something and I do enjoy that I just didn't notice as much while I was reading, the story just unfolded better. Here we find Fidelma in Rome fairly recently arrived when the Archbishop elect of Canterbury is found murdered by presumably an Irish monk. Fidelma and Eadulf are asked to join forces again for much the same reason as before, to avert strife between Irish and Saxon. This time though a culprit was arrested and Eadulf is much less open minded than Fidelma. Lots of looks at early Christian Rome and the early Church, a little harsh on the Latin Rite, but maybe a little deservedly so, especially in the mind of Fidelma. I enjoyed the characters just as much as the last book which is what kept me reading and the mystery again, but I am looking forward to reading the next book to see if this reduced background info persists for more enjoyable reading.

The author brings the reader along, sharing clues, but never revealing the full story until the end.
Reading Tremayne's stories is always enjoyable.

Good story. Well written and full of interesting historical information. I can easily see why it has made a successful collection of books. My minor criticism is the over-glorification of Celtic traditions and Brehon laws and that comes from an Irishman born and bred! Of course the author is totally correct in that these traditions and laws were way superior as a fair system of government compared to the rest of Europe (not called the dark ages for nothing). We still had slaves and harsh conditions for very many. I have found the description of the Irish/Celtic church and it's differences with the Roman Church very interesting. When this information comes from such a distinguished Celtic scholar as Peter Beresford-Ellis then it must be a truthful picture. I have now read the first two books in the series and intend to read more.

The seller had this book stored where a terrible mold was growing, it stank worse than any basement. It was sent in a plastic shopping bag and properlyrics protected. Had to be left out in direct sunlight and dry air with pages spread open for more than a week to get the odor out in order to hold it for reading.

The book is a curious window into 6 th century Rome, the vicissitudes of both the waning empire and the burgeoning ecclesiastical empire, and the righteousness of the Celtic church. Satisfying, to provide the setting for the separate missions of the 2 sleuths and to prepare the reader for their independent callings. Excellent bridge from fidelma 1 to 3.

Fidelma is in Rome on a mission for her church when the priest chosen to be the new archbishop of Canterbury is found dead and his treasures stolen. Fidelma and Eadulf are thrust into a case where everyone around the victim has a motive and this time it may be hard to tell truth from lie. This is another top notch mystery from Peter Tremayne that will keep you guessing til the very end.

I read the first sister fidelma mystery and was excited that I might have found a new Ceres to read. I have read much of brother cadfael (different author) and enjoyed many of those books and was looking forward to the same with this series. And while this book was okay, I didn't find it as good as the first. I think a big part of that was that the editing was very poor. There were the usual editing problems of misspelled words or repeated words in the same sentence. But the biggest issue was that within the same chapter the same content would be repeated. Sometimes it felt like the author was set a goal of a certain number of pages and just said the same things more than once. At other times it felt like the author and the editors had forgotten what had come only few pages earlier. Also, I like strong women characters but her male sidekick is way too weak as a foil for her. While I am not giving up on sister fidelma yet, I was a little disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hurray for Sister Fidelma!
Reviewed in Canada on August 16, 2012
I first met Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidelma in a book borrowed from the library. I read all the volumes of this series in my library, then decided I'd like to read the whole series. This is the first book, and as delightful as the rest.

Sister Fidelma has a lot to offer as a series detective. For one thing, she's intelligent, determined, and unfailingly just. For history buffs, she opens the door into medieval Europe. This book takes place in seventh-century England, although most of the series takes place in Ireland. For Celtic lovers, Fidelma herself is not only Irish, but an expert in Irish law and customs of the time (the author, Peter Tremayne, is a scholar specializing in medieval Ireland). Fidelma is very vocal about the superiorities of the Celtic Christian Church to the encroaching ways of Rome, creating an interesting thread of tension for those who, unlike Fidelma, know that Rome is going to win that war. For women looking for a role model of liberated womanhood, Fidelma, princess, nun, judge, detective, and, in later books, wife and mother, is superb.

the Irish get everywhere and in this novels we find Fidelma in Rome at another conference.

Here we find a murder, missing treasure and a person wrongly accused of murder.

Can Fidelma and Eadulf solve the crime? Off course they can! The twists and turns of the answer though are fascinating and complicated. Its a great book. I couldnt put it down.

You'd be mad to miss it. Apart from the fact that Peter Tremayne is a world class story teller he also throws light on the 7th century church, the church and the Irish churches outreach into the then known world.

Dont miss it. I coulnt put it down.

The story of this fascinating character continues, taking up her adventures following the events of book 1. The intrigues within the church and its ambitious hierarchy, the growing feelings between herself and her Saxon colleague, not one, but several murders - it's a roller-coaster.
There are some convoluted twists and turns but what a satisfying tale. Whether you're an Agatha Christie fan or a lover of historical mysteries, you'll enjoy this engaging who dunnit.
