From genteel Boston to the wilds of Montana, she is searching for a safe haven for her family—and finds unexpected love.

Having lost her beloved husband, a whaling captain, to a watery grave, Molly Gallagher refuses to risk more heartbreak. Determined to keep her headstrong son from following in his father’s footsteps, she agrees to become the mail-order bride of a Montana country doctor. She tells her new husband that she can never give her love to another man; what she doesn’t tell him is that she has a young daughter and a rebellious teenage son.

Molly’s ruse might have worked, but Seth Kendrick has secrets of his own: a willful daughter determined to end the marriage before it even begins—and a double life keeping his neighbors safe from outlaws. In an untamed land of vigilante justice, Molly has no choice but to trust this gray-eyed stranger whose stubbornness matches her own, whose kisses unleash flash floods of desire—and who may be the one man in a million who could win her fiery, faithful heart.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Johnston's ( Sweetwater Seduction ) 19th-century romance is light on originality and heavy on sentimentality. Widower Seth Kendrick, a doctor in rural Montana, needs a wife to civilize his rambunctious, tomboy daughter Patricia (known as Patch), so he advertises for one. Widow Molly Gallagher needs a home for her children Whit and little Nessie and decides to accept Seth sight unseen. The couple wants to make the best of things, but the children intend to sabotage the effort. Patch opens the hostilities by pushing Molly into the Missouri River as soon as her steamboat docks; Whit retaliates by shoving Seth in after her. The youngsters' hostility doesn't prevent the newlyweds from rapidly registering their mutual attraction, although Molly is occasionally uneasy about her secretive bridegroom.pk Seth is extremely reticent about his past, seems to be the only man around who refuses to wear a gun, would rather be called a coward than stand up and fight and sometimes stays out all night, offering up an excuse that wouldn't fool his horse, let alone Molly.

Joan Johnston is the top 5 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of 62 contemporary and historical novels and novellas with more than 15 million copies of her books in print. Joan's bestselling Bitter Creek, Hawk's Way, and Benedict Brothers series have enchanted readers during her 35-year writing career.

Joan's adventures traveling the world as an Air Force brat—encountering a cobra on the back porch and letting a baby octopus crawl on her hand in the Philippines, getting her teeth straightened by a Danish dentist in Casablanca, watching a camel get slaughtered at the souk in Marrakech, and learning to ride on an Arabian stallion in Morocco—made her curious about the world and gave her a love of travel. That rich upbringing—as one of seven kids—gave her the material to become the writer she is today

Joan loves to entertain and her creative table settings and menus are featured in her monthly newsletter. Joan also plays tennis and hikes in the mountains around Boulder, Colorado, where she lives.

Joan earned a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, Florida, an M.A. in Theater from the University of Illinois and a J.D. with honors from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin.

She has also raised two pretty great kids.

Her books have been published by Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, and Harlequin. Joan has also self-published a number of contemporary novels and novellas.

I'm surprised I liked one of this author's books. I didn't like Captive & didn't get very far into Wyoming Bride before I quit. I put author down as a do not read; stories too dark, too sad for my taste. But this one was a light, easy, fun read. The challenge of the step kids made the story interesting, I liked the main characters, enjoyed the romance. I hope the connecting books to this one will be as fun to read.

So, I loved this story, which was sexy, sweet, poignant and fun, all wrapped up in one great read. A widow and a widower blending families is never easy, and sexy Seth and beautiful Molly had their hands full for sure. Delightful book.

I enjoyed this book so much! It has to be one of the best western love stories I have read. I thought the story had all the elements that a love story should have. All of the characters were well written into the story and I will be looking forward to reading more oh Joan Johnston books.
Do yourself a favour and read this book as so as you get it, you won't be able to put it down until you finish it.

This story held onto my interest long enough for me to see it to the end, but there were some aspects I found wanting. My biggest issue is how the relationship between Seth and his daughter, Patch, was handled. It was very understandable for Patch to feel apprehensive about her father's impending new marriage and for her to disguise her fear behind her bad behavior. I would therefore have liked to see Seth realize this at some point. Instead, he never seems to figure out that his daughter is terrified about being replaced in his life, and he keeps on showering attention on the stepchildren and Molly all the way until the end of the book, without ever quite making it up to Patch. He does keep scolding her and demanding her become a lady, however. Maybe Johnston was trying to stay true to the mores of those times, but I found this forcing a girl to be someone she is not a distasteful plot arc. My other main issue is that no characters or plot points seem to be well-developed, except, ironically, the very inconvenient baggage, Patch. Hero and heroine feel lust for each other on first sight. A thinly disguised mystery and Seth's unconvincing, somewhat haphazardly put-together tortured past complete the plot. I am someone who likes to see love actually develop throughout the book, not be suddenly announced by each character in the last twenty pages. And as in every medical romance I pick up (you will see that I've been amassing them in my listmania), I hope for good medicine if the hero or heroine is a doctor--in this case, it is barely touched upon and is very much just a convenient plot device. He doesn't even manage to figure out Molly is pregnant!

Surprisingly for me, Patch and Whit came across as the main strengths of this book. I generally don't like children in the romances I read, but this one was an exception.

Molly has to get creative in order to save her family after the loss of her husband. She is fresh out of funds and family. Meantime Seth, in Montana, needs help raising his daughter. She signs on to be his mail order bride, but there are surprises in order for each of them. Watching their issues getting resolved as well as their relationship develop is neat. Good writing, interesting situations.

Her books are so good, and I read a book a day (almost every day), and I still have time to do everything else I want to do. I'd love to know how she has the time to write so many books.

Thought I would be disappointed when I got this... I thought this was one of the Hawks way series, (i am seriously addicted to them...and thinking about seeking help for this ...LOL) Anyway, found out this was totally different, and loved it... I think I finished it is two days with a couple of very long nights... as soon as I was reading it, I thought...This has to have a sequel...it just has to...so on into the book I realized it must...I went searching and sure enough it does...Outlaws Bride!!! You must get it too...it is just as good... Joan Rocks!!! Nora Roberts used to be my favorite, and still like her, but Joan has taken the lead!!!! Hope you enjoy!!

A mail-order bride story where he has a daughter who doesn't want a new mother and she has a son who doesn't want to move away from his old home. Neither of them mentioned having kids, and the son and daughter put every obstacle they can into the situation. I really enjoyed it.
