An SCU team investigates a string of accidents, only to uncover a deadly and deliberate monster in the latest novel from New York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper.

In Clarity, North Carolina, the residents have fallen victim to an unfortunate series of events. Seemingly random accidents have taken the lives of several citizens in the small mountain town. But these deadly coincidences are anything but. Something is on the hunt in Clarity, and the only clue as to what is a cryptic note given to the victims 24 hours before they meet their ends: “Wait for dark.”

Sheriff Mal Gordon knows how to handle his town, but he has no idea how to handle this. Hollis Templeton and her team from the Special Crimes Unit, including her partner and lover, telepath Reese DeMarco, are called in to investigate.

But while the SCU has prepared them for the unknown, the incredible evil stalking Clarity shakes the team to its core when one of their own is targeted. Now Hollis, the “cat with nine lives” finds herself facing death again.

And this time, not even her partner can protect her...

For one reason or another I have always been drawn to stories about people with these special abilities , wondered if ghosts are real , known there was in fact good and evil in the world but maybe not as many understand or believe. The SCU stories give me the chance to let my imagination wonder and entertain at the same time. I don't know the answers to are there ghosts or do people really have these powers but I can enjoy a good story and ponder.

Fear the Dark is the first thing that I have read by Kay Hooper and I ordered two more books in the series before I was half way through the first book. The basic idea of the series is that the FBI has gathered people who have various psychic abilities in a Special Crime Unit. I love a good mystery and I honestly know who did what by about halfway through the book but I did not figure this one out until the end but it was one of those wonderful mysteries that even though you didn't figure it out when the bad guy is revelled you understand how all of the pieces fit together. Each book is a stand alone book so that you can read them in any order. One hint is that there are two small sections at the end of the book that provides a short profile of the people in the CSU and of psychic abilities. I would have liked to have known that before I finished the book but they are not necessary for understanding what is happening in the book.

I have to preface this review by saying that I am a huge Bishop/SCU fan, and thus, am definitely biased (haha). I have followed Ms. Hooper's characters all the way from the beginning, and Wait For Dark is a wonderful addition to this amazing series. In my opinion, Wait for Dark is much better written than Fear the Dark (the novel that came before this one), though it is not my favorite SCU book (Out of the Shadows wins that contest!). In Wait for Dark, the plot was interesting, with just the right mix of psychic and non-psychic phenomenon, our secondary characters are much fleshed out and enjoyable, and the other half of the SCU team, Cullen and Kirby, actually felt like they played a meaningful part in the overall investigation. These were some of the major issues I had with the previous book, and I felt that Ms. Hooper does a much better job with these points in Wait for Dark.

Of course, Wait for Dark featured Hollis, one of the most fleshed out (and powerful) SCU characters that has had multiple "featurette" books previously. While I admit that I had thought her story didn't need to be expanded upon (seeing how she has so many abilities already), it was nice to see her and Reese interact more, and it was equally wonderful to see her be an SCU Team Leader, having gone through so much despite her relatively young age. I liked that Wait for Dark addressed most of Hollis' weaknesses but didn't make her out to be a perfect heroine by any means. Her interactions with the team members, locals, and especially Bishop, seemed very in-character and true to the Hollis we have seen grow since she was first introduced years ago.

For long-time readers of the series, you will be pleased by the references to other SCU characters and the presence of Bishop and Miranda. I loved that continuity and always enjoy getting a peek at what the other characters are up to! First time readers should still give this book a chance, though, as the story is comfortably contained and Wait for Dark can be read as a completely standalone novel. It might even peak your interest enough to take a look at the entire series, and I would recommend the series with no hesitation!

Clarity North Carolina seems sweet but then 4 fatal accidents make Sheriff Malachi Gordon suspicious that these were not "accidental."

Mal calls in the SCU to investigate quietly and the same evening there is another death. Thia one an obvious murder because Pearl Cross was found impaled on sharpened tree branches at the height of her attic window. Strange clues leave Pearls red stiletto heels pointing the way and all the victims were cryptically texted the afternoon before with the message “Wait for dark.”

Hollis Templeton and Reese DeMarco are sent on to investigate the murders and EVERYBODY that can be connected with the murders.

Hollis is by far my favorite character in this series and she does not disappoint in this book either. Kind of different from the other books as far as the unsub & what he is into but by no means makes it any less of a great book.

I love the Bishop series! I can't get enough. If you haven't read any of them, please consider it. You won't regret it. I didn't read them in order, as each book is its own story, so you don't feel you have to start at "the beginning." If you like psychological horror/murder mysteries and the psychic realm, you will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series! No regrets! Well, my only regret is Kay Hooper can't write them fast enough. hahahaha

I'm a very avid reader, love Kay Hooper, yet I've always figured who the BIG EVIL is in these wonderfully written SCU books! But she completely got me in this one! Looking forward to more "unguessable" SCU stories and to more wonderful agents.Ms.Hooper: you have so much potential material to carry this series for another twenty years or more! Please remember this though: Not all pagan beliefs are evil and a a pentagram is actually a symbol of good protection (not satanic) Blessed Be, Erin Bannerman 💖

I do the Bishop series though I have to admit they sometimes annoy me, I have read all the series so far and there are discrepancies first Quentin cant wear a watch but Reese can as long as he doesnt use a lot of energy then in another book Quentin is one of the view agents that can wear one. Bishop wore a watch in out of the Shadows. Which brings me to another point if Miranda and Bishop share and borrow abilities how come he can speak to animals and she cant and why over the years does he get stronger and she doesnt. their relationship bothers me sometimes I think he just wants her for her abilities and other times he seems to love her. When she got shot why was he not bleeding too as it said hit one you hit the other. The shielding is another thing SCU is a unit that uses extra abilities yet they are always shielding. I would love to read the story about Miranda and Bishop, when they first met and about the killer that killed her family, also more about there life together. I love Hollis and Reese but it is also nice to read about others. There are a lot of stories where the killer is a cop which I find interesting a lot of bad cops in America. Still i do enjoy them and hope there are many more to come
