In this Pennyfoot Hotel Christmas mystery, the head count is down—but the body count is up this holiday season...

With one of her housemaids leaving to get married, Cecily Sinclair Baxter wants nothing more for Christmas than some good help. Instead of visions of sugar plums, she’s calling the plumber to deal with flooded bathrooms. Then there’s the surly new janitor, who acts like he got coal in his stocking.

But as Cecily scrambles to hire and train new staff in time for the holidays, one of her guests is beyond help. Gerald Evans is found stabbed to death on the beach, and Cecily soon discovers he was a private investigator from London looking into dark doings involving the Pennyfoot. Who among the staff or guests was being pursued, and what secret drove that person to cold-blooded murder?

Kate grew up in London, England, and at a very early age began telling stories to her school friends while huddling in bomb shelters during the Blitz of WW II. She moved to the U.S. in 1963 and published her first book in 1987. Since then she's written over sixty romance and mystery novels. She now lives in Oregon with her husband, Bill and Bella, a feisty chihuahua mix. Her "upstairs/downstairs" mysteries appeal to fans of Downton Abbey. The Pennyfoot Hotel Mysteries are set in Edwardian England, while the Manor House series takes place in an English village during WW II. Her new contemporary series, The Misty Bay Mysteries, features an English tearoom on the Oregon coast. The first book in the series, In Hot Water, will debut on October 12th, 2021. A few years back I read one of these mysteries and wrote that I would not read another as it really did not grab me. Then I decided to read another Christmas mystery and found I was getting into the characters and have been enjoying these ever since. I do have to say that I still am not a fan of some of the earlier regular season Pennyfoot mysteries as I feel the writing and the language is just a bit not to my liking; but the Christmas season mysteries are quite good. This one is essentially her best. This one had lots of twists and turns, lots of reading with close to 300 pages and while I was pretty sure of who did it, I did not guess absolutely until the culprit (s) were revealed. I love the relationship between the main character (Cecily) and her husband (Baxter). I am actually sad to see this Christmas annual come to an end. However, the author did a nice job of wrapping things up and knowing that all the characters including Pansy and Gertie are going on to better things in their "lives."

This fun-to -read holiday mystery has realistic characters in an English town just trying to get through the traditions and expectations of Holiday Season in one of the most obvious settings---a "resort" where people go to be put in the Christmas mood with as many quaint and warm activities as can be fit into their schedules. This author has a way of putting so much stress on the protagonists, I think the reader "buys into" the many things that go wrong simply to see how the story ends. There are several murders, a wedding, and a traditional, amateur Holiday production for the guests, amongst everything else that comes with normal Christmas celebrating, and even a recurrence of some historical criminal activity thrown in to bring forth the story of Pennyfoot Hotel's past. It all keeps the reader entertained and guessing, what is exactly causing all the bad luck at this seemingly ideal place to spend your holidays.

Mulled Murder is the twenty-first book in the Pennyfoot Hotel series. And to say, for me at least, this is the last book in the series.

Once again the rush is on around the Pennyfoot Country Club to get ready for the Christmas celebration. Phoebe is once again in a dither putting together yet another skit to present at the annual Christmas show. In addition, Phoebe and her husband, Col. Fortescue find the body of Gerald Evans on the beach near the hotel. They soon fined that he was in fact a guest at Pennyfoot and also a detective who was investigating art thefts and the shipping of those items out of England.

Although Cecily, Baxter and the others upstairs, are entertaining and well developed, it's the staff down in the kitchen that I have enjoyed so much. Mrs. Chubb the housekeeper, Gertie the head maid and all the other are an enjoyable group of people. They never fail to put a smile on my face and make me chuckle.

Sorry to see this series end, but it has certainly been an entertaining series.

Kate Kingsbury has done it again. She has created a charming Christmas mystery involving the close-knit staff at the Pennyfoot Hotel. It is an interesting and easy read for a relaxing night at home or for a day at the beach. I am so sad to hear that this will be the last book in her series set in late-Victorian England. Perhaps if her fans let her know how much her characters are missed, Ms. Kingsbury (Doreen Roberts) will write another sometime in the near (hopefully) future.

Love all the Pennyfoot Mystery books. I started with No.1 and have purchased and read the entire series. I think at some point in time I will reread them again, that in itself should tell how enjoyable they are. Kate Kingsbury is an excellent story teller or novelist which ever you prefer. You will not be disappointed. The series contains interesting plots, a cast of colorful characters, suspense and of course the final mysterious conclusion. If you enjoy classic English Mysteries, this is for you.

It's not a bad story, it's not poorly written, but it just did not draw me in. The period setting is almost irrelevant to the telling of the tale and is really only expressed in the description of costumes. Thus it was not quite what I had expected.

I have enjoyed the Pennyfoot Holiday Mysteries for a few years now. I look forward to the new book each year. I am wondering if this is the last one though. Are Cecily and Bax going to go traveling now? How will the characters get along without Cecily there to help them? I am also reading the non-holiday books. Will be watching for the next volume in the lives of the people living at the Pennyfoot.

It was good to get back to the Pennyfoot Country Club for Christmas. The plot was what we've come to expect, but it was not too hard to figure this one out. Would've liked it to have been a bit more challenging since the plot ends with a sense that the stories may be at an end or taking on a new direction abroad. Will have to see what Ms. Kingsbury has in store for us all.
