The Mullah's Storm was such a wonderful debut that I wasn't sure its author would be able to match its high quality in this sophomore title. I was delighted to find that Young fully delivered with Silent Enemy, proving his real gift for writing authentic and thrilling military fiction.

Young's experience and expertise in military matters and aviation impart credibility to the action of Silent Enemy. Whereas the theatre of war of The Mullah's Storm was the harrowing landscape of the mountains of Afghanistan, Silent Enemy pits our heroes in the equally treacherous confines of a military freighter outfitted as an air ambulance, rigged with a terrorist-group bomb. As with The Mullah's Storm, Young draws realistic portrayals of wartime actors: Their heroism, flaws, humanity and inhumanity. The cast of characters is broader than in the first novel, and Young widens the window into Gold's psychology in this second entry into the Parson and Gold series. She, like Parson, is a unique and terrific hero of the military thriller genre.

If you're looking for an exceptionally well-written novel brimming with action and populated by rich characters, look no further than Silent Enemy.

To begin with, I was greatly impressed with The Mullah's Storm - as I had traveled in Afghanistan, I was familiar with the terrain. Young's style of writing is clear and concise. So I looked forward to the second book, Silent Enemy - and was not disappointed. This is a bomb-on-the-aircraft plot but what makes it exciting is how crew and passengers react. Returning with the two main protagonists from The Mullah's Storm is brilliant, for we can see how they've grown and changed but, essentially, remained true to themselves. I am glad Young resisted a romantic attachment, but showed them as emotionally caring buddies. You know that, somehow, they will survive but the journey is gripping. Using the two points of view, Major Parsons and Master Sergeant Gold, really makes the story more than a cut above the average adventure yarn. And I leaned a hellava lot about the operation of a C-5. Recommended!

As a former C-5 flight engineer myself, I enjoyed this book immensely. I read The Mullah's Storm (also a riveting tale) before I read Silent Enemy because I thought the latter would make more sense after having read the former. Although both books involve the same two protagonists, the author did a great job of laying out two entirely separate plots.
Having accumulated nearly 3600 flight hours (and one hit from an SA-16 SAM) as a C-5 Instructor FE, it immediately became obvious to me when I read the sample pages before buying the book that the author was intimately involved with the C-5. I often found myself, in my mind, helping Parson and his crew troubleshoot and work each system malfunction. It brought back fond memories of my flying days, especially my simulator training! (I'm retired now.) I was impressed with the technical accuracy of the problems encountered by the aircrew as well as their solutions, although there were a few things I might have done differently had I been on Parson's crew. The author's superior writing ability makes these situations easily understood, yet still suspenseful, thrilling, and entertaining for the layperson unfamiliar with aircraft systems. The one thing I liked most about this book is there is no need for far-fetched, ridiculous situations like the Delta Force climbing down the interior of the air-refueling boom into the C-5 to save the day, no F-117s launching out of the aft cargo doors at altitude, or any nonsense like that. This book is a thrilling page-turner that shows tremendous respect for the world-class men and women who selflessly and proudly serve in all branches of America's military. I look forward to Mr. Young's next book.

I read Thomas Young's first book [Mullah's ] because my husband piloted C-130 aircraft in the USAF.
It was a good read, lean and to the point without pages of flowery descriptions. Just the kind of book
for my husband...and after he read it he echoed my views.\

Silent Enemy is equally good and a quick read because of the author's style. This would be a great gift
for the men in your family.

Thomas Young is on his way to becoming a best-selling author.

Silent Enemy is an incredibly detailed, yet fast paced thriller that truly puts the reader in the cockpit of the USAFs largest transport plane. Young writes a harrowing tale that made it difficult to put down and kept me asking myself, "what would I do of I were on a medevc flight with a hidden bomb?". I thought that all the terminology used was very authentic ( and as Young himself has military and flight experience, it makes sense) but I do wish there was a bit more of an explanation what some terms meant...I found myself using Google a bit to decypher things. Over all I was a fan of this book and I would recommend it to anyone who wants an exciting and authentic story.

Second great action novel from Young! What was impressive with his first novel, Mullah's Storm, was the great writing in a plot that focused on a few characters in an isolated situation. In Silent Enemy Young takes it a step further, working with a plot in which the characters are even more isolated, yet the conflict and pressure never let up and nothing is predictable. TV writers would call it a "bottle episode", which is very difficult to write successfully. Young's books are known for their action and military detail, but he should be equally respected for his craft as a writer.

Major Mike Parson, an AF cargo plane pilot, and Sergeant Major Sophia Gold, an interpreter-trainer working with the Afghan police were the main characters in last year's excellent "The Mullah's Storm." This time around, they are both on a C-5 transport carrying a load of wounded Americans and Afghanis that is one of several such aircraft that have been rigged with altitude-sensitive explosive devices. Three have exploded by the time that they realize the full depth of their peril. How they cope with an increasingly dangerous set of challenges makes for an exciting book.
