I love Jenn McKinlay's cozy mystery series books so took a chance to order/read her series written under Josie Belle. I enjoyed very much ... quick reads and characters are great. Passed books on to a couple of friends and they also enjoyed.

"50% Off Murder" by Josie Belle is the debut novel in a new cozy mystery series about a group of friends who live in the small town of Saint Stanley, Virginia, who gather weekly to exchange coupons and to plan out their shopping trips using their best bargain knowledge. These gals have bargain shopping and money-saving down to a science, and I love a lot of their ideas that are tossed about throughout the book. At the end of the book there is an extra list of money-saving tips that I found useful. But back to murder.

Maggie Gerber is a founding member of the "Good Buy Girls" and twenty-four years after her romance with Sam Collins ended, Sam moves back to Saint Stanley as the sheriff. In the meantime, Maggie had married a law enforcement man, had their daughter, Laura, and had lost her husband in the line of duty. Never remarried, she made a good life for herself, working in a doctor's office while her daughter is in college. Sandy, Maggie's niece, was staying with Maggie along with her little son Josh while her husband was deployed to Afghanistan and Sandy was finishing up in nursing school. Maggie isn't lonely with the two of them in the house with her.

Maggie hosts the Good Buy Girls meetings and at the latest meeting, member Claire Freemont is late getting there. When she arrives she acts a little strange and distracted. She had picked up dessert on her way over. The ladies give each other advice on where to get their best buys on what they need and then go home. The next day Maggie takes Josh to storytime at the library where Claire works and winds up volunteering to help Claire take some boxes of books to the library basement. When they arrive in the basement, they find a dead man on the floor with Claire's cake knife protruding from his chest, and one of Claire's books from her own personal library laying beside him. Claire is particularly upset about finding this man dead in her library, because it comes out that he is from Claire's past and all eyes turn to her as the main suspect in the murder of John Templeton from Baltimore, MD, from where Claire has moved to Saint Stanley.

All of the ladies in the group of bargain-hunters gather in support of Claire. For a yet unknown reason, Claire isn't giving the whole story about John Templeton other than she dated him briefly, but the others know there is more to the story that she isn't telling. Sheriff Sam Collins doesn't want Maggie or the others involving themselves in the investigation, but Maggie lets that go in one ear and out the other as she and the others work to clear their friend's name.

This is an enjoyable cozy mystery although a few parts are weak, but I'm sure with subsequent additions to the series, they will get better. Maggie is the character we get to know best in this first book, and I'm looking forward to getting to know the other characters more in depth. I like Maggie's style, her independence and her stubbornness in not giving up. She has worked hard to maintain the small, but very nicely decorated and cared-for home she has, and is wonderful to her friends and to her niece and to little Josh. Since Claire is the main suspect, we get to learn a lot about her in this debut novel.

The bargain shopping tips are inspiring and are something that can be taken seriously if the reader doesn't already know most of them. That's the great thing about cozy mysteries. They are written around one subject, and there is always something to learn about that subject. The cover is particularly catchy on this book with all the handbags marked "50% off" and I do love handbags! In this particular case, the cover is what first caught my eye and attracted me to this book. I'll admit it.

Recommended for mystery lovers and cozy mystery lovers.

Ever since I found out that author Jenn McKinlay also wrote under this name at one time, I've wanted to start this series. I loved this book and the group of Good Buy Girls friends. Being a bargain and discount fan (but not nearly as much of a shopper as these ladies are) I could relate to some of what they were doing as well as appreciate the tips given at the end of the book. There were some really funny scenes in the book, particularly between Maggie, the founder of the GBG group and her lifelong nemesis, Summer Phillips. It was like Lucy and Ethel all over, except that Maggie and Summer loathed one another.

I hadn't guessed the killer until a clue toward the end struck me. The showdown was a good one, and sweet Max, the 20-year-old resident genius and lawyer, came in very handy with using his brain to get himself and Maggie out of a tight spot. I'm hoping that Maggie and Sam can finally bury the hatchet regarding their seemingly lifetime feuds and disagreements, although I hope that they don't bury that hatchet in one another! I'm anxious to read more in this series, because by the end of the book, I felt like the women in the group were old friends.

This debut book caught me up in the friendships, suspenseful romance, and the surprising murder from the first paragraph until the satisfying ending on the last page. It also left me wanting more about these women sleuth/friends known locally as the "GBG's", or Good Buy Girls.

I love how these women are 'professional' in their buying habits and thus are welcomed in the retail communities, all the while, managing tight budgets for their respective families.

Maggie Gerber, a widow with one child in Penn State, lives with her Niece and great nephew, while her Nephew-In-Law is serving in Afghanistan. Budgeting the household is seriously needed. Maggie is also one sharp cookie in other areas of her life.

When one of the GBGs gets arrested for a body found in the Library basement (with Maggie hanging along,) something has to be done immediately or they will be one short for the up-coming sales. Not to mention, this person has multiple persons hating his existence!

The newly hired Sheriff is Maggie's worse dream come back. Sam Collins is a lifelong enemy or maybe something quite opposite. What he is right now is the jailer holding Claire Freemont behind bars.

With an Attorney who enjoys serving up ice cream cones, an adorable toddler, humor threading throughout the story, and an nasty rival back in town, this mystery packs something for everyone! And, it is 50% off!

There are good thrifty buy tips at the closing as well that are actually very helpful. I look forward to the next episode of the Good Buy Girls.

Although I believe most mystery fans who fancy a bit of romance in their stories will enjoy this book, it seemed a bit too contrived to me. The story centers around four best friends who call themselves The Good Buy Girls. No one can top them when it comes to shopping the sales except possibly Summer. Maggie, the main character, discovers that Summer, a childhood bully from her past, can still put up a good fight. Maggie soon discovers that the boy she loved and who left her in high school, has just returned to her home town as the new Sheriff. The characters are well crafted, the plot interesting, but Maggie stretched my credibility in her pushy interactions with the Sheriff

I really enjoyed this story. You fall in with the group of "good buy" girls immediately and the story pulls you in from there. The entire town is engaging and grabs you from the first chapter. Nice romantic interest to be explored in future stories. Highly recommend.
