USA Today bestselling mystery maven Mary Daheim brings us another intriguing tale in her cherished Bed-and-Breakfast mystery series in which a trip down memory lane brings Judith and Renie back to their old neighbourhood, and they are drawn to a seemingly deserted house that is much more than meets the eye.

On a trip to Renie′s old neighbourhood, the cousins′ curiosity is piqued by a mysterious brick Tudor house that always looked deserted during Renie′s junior high school days. Surprised that the house still looks abandoned after all these years, Judith and Renie, of course, cannot resist an opportunity to snoop around. They discover that Mr. and Mrs. Bland have lived in the house since 1947, and after cornering the mailman and milkman, Judith and Renie also learn that the Blands receive regular mail and food deliveries, but no one has ever seen the occupants who simply pay the bills with cash they leave in the milk box. Although intrigued by these strange, but definitely not sinister, occurrences, Judith is ready to focus her attention once more on her neglected husband Joe and the busy B&B business. Until one day Judith finds a dead body in the trunk of her car. And it′s the Blands′ milkman...

Chapter One

Judith McMonigle Flynn hurried to answer the front door, took one look at the hideous drooling green creature on theporch, and screamed. Panicking, she slammed the door andleaned against it. The thing was six feet tall, with gaping holesfor eyes, viscous green scales, and sharp yellow fangs. Judith wasso shaken that she couldn't move to call 911.

"Hey!" shouted a voice from outside. "Open up! It's me!Renie!"

Judith held a hand to her racing heart. Renie, along withother family members and friends, always used the back door. The front was reserved for guests at Hillside Manor. "Coz?" Judithcroaked, and slowly turned to open the door just a crack. There, next to the gruesome green creature, stood Serena Jones, more familiarly known to her family as Renie.

"Did SuperGerm scare you?" Renie asked, brown eyes wide.

"Good grief." Judith wilted against the doorframe. "Ithought I was going to have a heart attack. What is that awfulthing?"

"I guess I shouldn't have stood behind it," Renie said, lookingapologetic. "I would've gone to the back door, but this guyis kind of awkward to carry around." She gave the creature apat on one of its long, scaly arms. "It's just a cutout. I created itfor the county board of health's antigerm campaign. GarthDoyle made this model in his studio. The county will putposters of SuperGerm in all public restrooms to remind peopleto wash up."

"I'm about washed-up after that," Judith said, regainingsome of her aplomb. "How about getting that thing off the frontporch? It's not good advertising for a B&B."

"Hmm." Renie examined the cutout from stem to stern."Probably not. But don't you think it's good advertising for hygiene?"

"Yes, fine, super," Judith retorted. "Now put it back in yourcar before you come inside."

Renie, who was on the small side, struggled a bit as shecarted SuperGerm off to her car, which was parked in HillsideManor's driveway. Waiting on the porch, Judith surveyed thecul-de-sac. Just three days away from the start of summer, thespring shrubs, trees, and bulbs had faded away. The grass wasgreen, the leaves were glossy, and some of the roses were in fullbloom. But the sky was overcast, the temperature lingered in themidfifties, and there was a 40 percent chance of rain. It was, Judithknew, a typical June day in the Pacific Northwest.

"All gone," Renie announced, bounding up the steps. "Icould use some strong drink. You got any Pepsi?"

Judith nodded. "I just got back from Falstaff's Grocery. Ihave a full house tonight, so I had to fill the larder. Now thatschool's out, the B&B reservations are pouring in. I'm prettywell booked up through early August."

"That's great," Renie said, sitting down at the kitchen table."I'm not so busy. Summer's always a slow time in the graphic designbusiness. Everybody goes on vacation. Good for you, badfor me."

Judith took a can of Pepsi and a diet 7UP out of the refrigerator.Even after more than a year, she was still delighted with therenovations -- particularly in the kitchen -- that had been madefollowing a disastrous fire almost two years earlier.

"Say," Renie said as Judith joined her at the table, "have yougot time to take a little ride with me?"

Judith frowned at her cousin. "And with SuperGerm?"

"Well ... " Renie took a deep drink before finishing her reply."Yes, actually. I have to drop him off at Garth's. He needssome fine-tuning. SuperGerm, I mean, not Garth."

Judith looked skeptical. "And why would I want to helpchauffeur SuperGerm to Garth's studio?"

Renie reached into the sheep-shaped jar on the table andfilched three oatmeal raisin cookies. "Booyoommerthathouthnmoofle?" she inquired with her mouth full.

Judith was accustomed to her cousin's voracious appetite;she had also grown adept at translating Renie's food-marredspeech. "The house on Moonfleet Street? Sort of. Why?"

"Ahmobthethd."

"Oh." Judith nodded. "You've always been obsessed with thatplace, ever since you were a kid. What about it?"

Renie finally swallowed. "Garth lives in my old neighborhood, about four blocks from that house. As you may recall, it'sSpanish-style architecture, very unusual for this part of theworld."

"I recall." Judith turned as her cleaning woman, PhylissRackley, stomped into the kitchen carrying two black plasticbags. Upon seeing Renie, she stopped and glared.

"You," Phyliss breathed. "Don't start in on me with yourRomish ways."

"Bite me," Renie snapped.

Phyliss kneaded the plastic bags with her skinny fingers."False gods. Painted idols. Craven images."

"Funny," Renie remarked, about to pop another cookie intoher mouth. "I thought they were graven images."

"You're a blasphemer," Phyliss declared, pronouncing theword as if it were "blass-FEMUR." She turned to Judith andshook the black bags. "I don't like giving these to the St. Vincentde Paul. What's wrong with the Salvation Army?"

"Nothing," Judith replied, ignoring the long-standing religiousanimosity between Renie and Phyliss. "I'm the one who'sgiving that stuff away, and it'll go to whichever charity calls first. For now, I want those bags out on the back porch. They're clutteringup the second-floor hall."

With one last dark look for Renie, Phyliss proceeded downthe narrow hallway to the porch.

"The pope has spies everywhere," Renie called after thecleaning woman. "Better check the recycling bin, Phyliss."Judith shook her head. "I never bait Phyliss the way youdo," she admonished Renie. "I don't rile her. She's too good ather job."

"I didn't start it this time," Renie responded.

"You didn't need to," Judith said. "You've done it oftenenough in the past. Which," she went on as Phyliss returnedfrom the porch and headed down the basement stairs, "brings usback to the house on Moonfleet."

I love the way Mary Daheim puts her words together and sometimes I just have to put the reader down and laugh.

It was a little too dark for my taste. For anyone interested in the Nazi thefts of artworks it may be more interesting.

Judith McMonigle Flynn was minding her own business, waiting for guests to show up at her bed and breakfast.

Unfortunately, her Cousin Renie shows up with her latest Graphic Arts project, SuperGerm. Convincing Judith to go with her while she drops it's off, and to have a look at the house on Moonfleet Street.

This house has obsessed Renie for fifty years. In all that time, she had never seen anyone go in or out of the house, no one in the yard, not even kids, although she had seen children's toys in the yard when she was young. She didn't even know the name of the people who lived in the house.

Judith doesn't really care, she has a bigger problem. Her son Mike and his wife Kristin have separated. Kristin has gone off to visit her parents, leaving Forest Ranger Mike with the two little boys.

But when her husband Joe, ex-cop and current private detective is deep in an investigation of his own and has to go to Omaha on a case, she's at loose ends and decides to help Renie find out whose living in the house.

It doesn't take long to find out the house has been inhabited since 1947 by Dick and Jane Bland and Jane's sister Sally. Dick and Jane even had two kids, Anna, their natural child and Luke, who was adopted. But they can't find anyone, including neighbors who have ever seen any of them.

Snooping around the house, Judith and Renie talk to the milkman Vern Benson, who tells them the Blands get their groceries and mail dropped off regularly and leave the money for him in the milk box. He's never seen anyone from the house, either.

That probably would have been the end of it, however, later that day, when Judith opens the trunk of her car to put in the groceries, she finds the body of the milkman, Vern Benson.

Suddenly, Judith is glad Joe is in Omaha. It doesn't help when the two detectives, Glenn Morris & Jonathan Trashman consider her a suspect in the crime.

Deciding she better clear herself, Judith, along with her sidekick Renie starts her own investigation and is stunned to find out the dead man wasn't Vern Benson the milkman, but someone named Frank Purvis, who doesn't seem to have existed before showing up pretending to be the milkman.

Why was he at the Bland's house? And why can't they ever meet Dick & Jane. They do manage to meet the adult Anna & Luke and even their grandson, a local newscaster but the Blands remain as elusive as ever.

Could Frank Purvis's death have anything to do with the large package that had been delivered to the Blands. When Judith & Renie find out that a package was delivered every year at the same time to the Blands, they become even more suspicious.

And why do the police seem so reluctant to investigate the crime?

Judith is determined to solve the crime, hopefully before Joe gets back from Omaha.

Highlights:

Joe & Judith's relationship. I just wish he had been in this story more.

Cousin Renie is always a hoot and I love her fights with Phyllis Rackley, Judith's cleaning lady.

Gertrude - Judith's mother who has agreed for her daughter's sake to stop calling Joe, Lunkhead. Afterall, Knucklehead works just as well.

Cousin Renie and her husband Bills all out campaign to rid their property of the dreaded squirrel.

Sweetum's the cat. This cat is a true character in the book. I don't particularly like cats, but I wouldn't mind having this one.

Good mystery. Never guessed what was going on.

I think the Mary Daheim Bed & Breakfast series is the best series in the mystery genre. Not only are they a good mystery, but are very funny. The relationships between Judith and her huge family of cousins, uncles and aunts are wonderful. Even though people such as her Uncle Corky and Aunt Theodora usually appear on a page or so in each book, you get a real sense of the closeness of this extended family.

If you've reading the series, be sure and get an anthology novel called "Motherhood is Murder." There are 4 stories in the book and one of them is a Mary Daheim short story, which includes the wedding of Renie's 3 children. 3 weddings on the same day at 3 different locations. Only Carolyn Hart's name shows up when you bring up the book, but don't be fooled.

Lowlights: No lowlights, except that it will probably be another a year or so before we get the next one. If you haven't read them yet, try Mary Daheim's Alpine Series. I don't think it's as good as her bed & breakfast, but much better than a lot of other series you will read. I have reviewed that entire series, if you want to check them out.
