I like it when one of the main characters get severely wounded. It rarely happens. And in a brutal world like this, it oughta happen much more often. In fact, it reminds me how I truly miss the old formula of this series, where characters die off and new ones replace them. That made and kept this series fresh. Too bad Gold Eagle can't work that out. They could if they were not so lazy, and recently some of their books shows it. (Like the most recent Prodigal's Return. Horrifically edited. And a major let-down for the Deathlands diehard fans in numerous ways.
But back to this, much better written book of the series.
Author Victor Milan gives fans a new adventure, chock-full of colorful, post-holocaust scenery that plays clearly in the reader's mind, with the first gigantic screamwing mutie that was played out pretty cool. The blasted remains of St. Louis MO makes a solid backdrop to this thrilling DL adventure. Although good, I felt that this was the weakest of Milan's DL thus far. His last one, Vengeance Trail, was so awesome, that beating that standard of writing must be hard to beat.
But it sure beats out hands down such recent titles such as: Arcadian's Asylum, Baptism of Rage, Prophecy, Alpha Wave, and the 100th Anniversary issue with Dean's return. That one was a blatant slap in the face to the fans. What a shame, too. You'd think Gold Eagle would give out the best they have for the 100th edition of this longest post-holocaust series ever written.
At least Milan gives effort to his writing. He knows weapons and tactics, along with how to spell. You can't even find those in the first chapter of the more recent titles such as Tainted Cascade and Prodical's Return. You can tell a poorly written DL just after the first two chapters. You won't find that in Milan's work. The characters act and move like they should. You don't have brand-new comic-book muties you've never of before. Milan places your boots firmly on Deathlands dirt, and his combat is down and dirty, just as it should be.
Although I had some problems with some of the issues this book covers, after reading - and, for the most part, not even capable of finishing some of those awful titles I mentioned - Playfair's Axiom comes off like a DL best-seller. It made me appreciate this novel a bit more, and Milan's obvious care for this series and its readers.
I look forward to his next book.
