No One Lives Twice (A Lexi Carmichael Mystery) Paperback – May 20, 2014

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,519 ratings

I'm Lexi Carmichael, geek extraordinaire. I spend my days stopping computer hackers at the National Security Agency. My nights? Those I spend avoiding my mother and eating cereal for dinner. Even though I work for a top-secret agency, I've never been in an exciting car chase, sipped a stirred (not shaken) martini, or shot a poison dart from an umbrella.
Until today, that is, when two gun-toting thugs popped up in my life and my best friend disappeared. So, I've enlisted the help of the Zimmerman twins--the reclusive architects of America's most sensitive electronic networks--to help me navigate a bewildering maze of leads to find her.
Along the way, my path collides with a sexy government agent and a rich, handsome lawyer, both of whom seem to have the hots for me. Hacking, espionage, sexy spy-men--it's a geek girl's dream come true. If it weren't for those gun-toting thugs...

No One Lives Twice
No One Lives Twice by Julie MoffetLexi Carmichael series #1. Contemporary (2010) mystery suspense series.Lexi is a self proclaimed geek. She works for the National Security Agency as a computer hacker. Her life is predictable going to the office every day until a friend disappears and Lexi finds herself in an active investigation. Lexi gets help from friends that speak the language of computer networks and finds herself confronted by gun carrying dangerous thugs. Will her training be enough for her to survive, let alone find her friend? An entertaining mystery and suspense where Lexi finds herself working with two different handsome men to find her friend. But are they both on the same side or are they just using her to find Basia?I loved Lexi’s non-stop attitude and her dedication to her friend. The book was a little longer than I’m used to at 489 pages in the paperback copy. That’s probably why I waited so long to finally read it. I’m glad I did and I’m looking forward to reading more adventures and if there will be romance or not and what kind of trouble she stirs up.

I don't usually write reviews because of the usual suspects: dealing with kids, housework, husband, overall laziness... And I can't remember the last time I read a book so enjoyable that I gave a shout-out on Facebook AND gave it 5 stars. But, yeah, it's that much fun.

Lexi Carmichael is your typical computer geek though she has no cell phone in an attempt to avoid her former Miss America, overbearing mother (hey, the book was published in 2010, so probably written before that, so I can suspend disbelief about a geek not having a smart phone for now). She works for the NSA and becomes involved in an international conspiracy, thanks to her BFF who puts her name on evidence that a ton of bad guys, as well as various spies, would love to get their hands on.

What I enjoyed most about this book was that the female main character was active. She wasn't some passive player who kept having things happen to her. Lexi used her wit to solve the case and keep all the players on their toes.

And the laughs? Oh, man! I was laughing so hard at poor Lexi's seduction scene that tears were pouring from my eyes. It takes a lot to make me laugh out loud when I read a light mystery (and I read a lot of them). To make me laugh like that takes talent.

If you enjoy a fun, light mystery with a lot of laughs and some steamy scenes, buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

"No One Lives Twice (Lexi Carmichael Mystery Book 1) by Julie Moffett was an exciting novel. Throughout the story, I contemplated how the author created the title. I only realized the significance of the title in the last 75 pages of the story. It was very astute of the author.
Ms. Moffett gave us all the elements a person could need in a mystery novel: an intelligent, insecure protagonist, two sexy male interests, laughter, and an intriguing plot. Then, you have all the elements of a great novel.

Lexi Carmichael, the female protagonist, lives a pleasant and safe life. All this changes when her best friend disappears, a mysterious package arrives, and various mysterious men enter her life. She has to stay one step ahead of everybody to unravel the truth. The ending will surprise even the most skeptical reader.

I hope the rest of the series is as engaging as the first inception. I would definitely read more of Ms. Moffett's novels.

To be honest, I started this book five times before I finally read it. Now this might sound like a bad thing, but we have Mrs. Goodwin's Fifth Grade Class at Duwamish Elementary School in what's now a long gone part of Seattle, but back in 1965, she would give credit for reading a whole book if you read the first five chapters. If after the first five chapters the author hadn't gotten your attention, she gave you credit for trying and you were free to move on. In fifth grade only one book failed her litmus test for me, Emile and the Detectives. As an adult, all sorts of books have failed, but not this one. By the time I reached Chapter Five I was so hopelessly hooked, I could barely stand to put the book down to get any sleep, much less stop reading the thing.

No One is the introductory novel to the Lexi Carmichael legacy of one girl's travel from NSA desk jockey to, well where, frankly, I'm not sure where at this point, I stopped to encourage people like me to read books like this (hopefully that will be people like you). Lexi is a minding her own business on her way from work to being set up by her beautiful wealthy mother (her father lovingly indulges her mother, but doesn't really participate in these set ups) with dinner at her parents lavish home in Washington DC when she discovers herself being mugged for something she doesn't have. By the time she escapes the mugger, reaches her parents' home, discovers she's been set up for dinner with a CPA who thinks he's all that and a bag of chips (and decides she's a secretary instead of the anti-hacker she is since she's a girl, any woman working in IT must read this dinner scene if nothing else, you'll be erecting shrines to Julie Moffett in your front yard!), bribes the Chef to help her escape the dinner, drives home to be mugged again by Middle Eastern Guy who has ransacked her apartment, you'll be hooked!

And this is long before the fifth chapter.

Listen, it's good, it's funny in the right places, it even has a plot. Read it. You'll thank me.

Minor/Background relationships, PG13--one shoot-out at the end. I love Lexi! She's in way over her head, but she keeps plugging. In the end, she gets the job done better than the professionals. She's absolutely clueless when it comes to relationships and has no idea 3 guys are head over heels for her. I love the side characters, especially Slash. The plot is full of twists and turns, maybe too many, but it's a fun ride. The cover didn't make sense until most of the way through the book, and the title didn't make sense until the last 50 pages, but that's a small nitpick. Great book.

I decided to give this book a read....wow. I am now on book 6 and they just keep getting better.Lexi Carmichael is an ex computer hacker but don't let that put you off. She has more social skills than some computer geeks, their description, but is finding life difficult in some areas. Her friends the Zimmerman twins, are introduced in this book and make more of an impact in later stories.A government computer expert named Slash arrives to help and an attraction between him and Lexi begins.
Each story stands alone but like a lot of series it does help to start at the beginning and keep with it.Beware I found myself still reading at 2am as I just wanted to read a little bit more.
