Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Duncan MacLerie had come to the Robertson clan hoping to negotiate a settlement with the new laird, but instead of securing a peace treaty, Duncan finds himself returning home with a new wife after he is tricked into marrying the laird’s sister, Marian Robertson, otherwise known as the Robertson Harlot. Marian surprises Duncan when she refuses his offer of marriage, though, and insists on a “handfasting” ceremony instead. Now both Duncan and Marian have the freedom to end things after a year, but the real question becomes whether either will choose to do so. A woman with a complicated past and a reputation she doesn’t deserve finds herself involved with a man of courage and honor in Brisbin’s latest richly emotional and splendidly sexy medieval romance. --John Charles

This is by far one of my favorite storylines of this series by Terri Brisbine. I just loved the story of Duncan and Marian. Duncan was so rigid in book one and I wasn't sure how I would take his story but the author added so many wonderful elements to his personality and struggle that it was a fantastic read. Add to that a great heroine was had endured so much for family, love and friendship. These two characters deserved a happy ending and you were cheering for them to get it but many hard choices had to be made along the way. I am not normally surprised by plot elements especially in this type of genre but there were some definite wow moments in this book as things began to be revealed. The brother's involvement is shocking. Also you honor bound Duncan must make some hard decisions for the sake of love. Great read and I would highly recommend it.

This is why I hate series books. Here is a good book and a good story. A good writer (I almost always enjoy Brisbin) and yet, I had the odd feeling all thru the book that there were things that would have been better explained to me about the MacLerie's clan and all those characters if I had read previous books. I shouldn't have to, yet if I had and the author explained things again it would have been repetitive to those who did read the previous books about this clan. Still, I refuse to read previous books just to get story I should already be getting. So as long as the series books are written I guess I will on occasion feel left out.

I could see her in my mind much better then him. Sometimes female authors can be very precise about describing the female characters (us girls check each other out all the time to see our competition I guess, ha). Yet so very often I feel the man's physical description falls a little short and from early on all you get is honorable and a pair of dark eyes for most of the rest of the book. I like some flexing thigh muscles or some big rough hands of something similar and not just in the beginning like an intro to characters. I don't want constant repetition, but I hate when the female gets more attention to detail and the man is only described in the beginning, like I should know him but I need to be thoroughly introduced to her? Again though perhaps he was well introduced in previous books??? Give me some visual and textile input about the guy. Frankly, he is more important to me, ha. All in all though it was a good book with a better ending. I did begin to suspect toward the end but was surprised at the extent the family went to as far as she was concerned in their chosen path. It was good but not a book for my keeper shelf.

A truly wonderful story. Duncan and Marian were truly exceptional characters. The plot held my interest throughout the story and I especially liked that the author did her research about medieval life. A truly wonderful historical fiction.👍👍

Although"book 3" appears in the title, I have not read any others in this series. It is possible, of course, that I might have gained added insight into characters or situations had I done so. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Strong H and h, great story line if a bit unusual. Secrets and eventual understanding. I don't think I missed anything not having read books 1 & 2. I do now want to go back and read them as well as others in this series, which I hope is what the author intended.

I was so in to this. Great twists and plot. But, like the first two books, it went south. I dislike martyrs. They whine and feel sorry for themselves. Marian started out okay but her poor me attitude and beg to be punished forever became tedious. Lastly, the lie at the end was unforgivable. And their acceptance of living a lie unacceptable. Ciara's real family had every right to her. She wasn't even related to Marian!

On the way to his new nogotiations for his clan, Duncan "The Peacemaker" of the MacLerie Clan helps an attractive woman to chase away an unwanted admirerer. Neither he nor any of the villagers know that he just helped Marian Robertson, the laird's sister who is also known as the Robertson Harlot. However, the laird tricks him into marriage with Marion. Duncan is stunned to find out that Marion doesn't wish to be married to him and prefers a temporary form of this union and he is even more surprised when he finds out that his bride doesn't deserve her undeserving nickname. But why all these arrangements? Could his bride be a danger to the alliance between the clans or even worse could she be a danger to his clan? And how is Duncan going to explain the situation to his laird?

Duncan was an extraordinary male lead character, who was defined through patience, devotion, intelligence and loyalty to his values and the people he loves. Marian was a worthy female main character who also had all of above vertues except maybe for the maturity to use these components properly to her advantage. In any case, I was very much impressed by the hero and heroine.

The plot of the book was very unusual. Firstly, I haven't yet come across a Highland Saga where the male main character was anything else besides a fierceful worrior and consequently a good laird. This book wasn't about the chief but about his most trusted negotiator. Well done! I very much liked his relaxed but determined and target oriented way of thinking that offered the main thread to the book. Another interesting development in the story line was how Marian "adopted" her daughter and how Duncan finally found a way to keep his family together without really betraying his loyalty neither to Marian nor to his laird or clan.

If you want to read a Highland saga with a "fresh" and unusual plot I can only recommend this book.
