Holly Wakefield works for the NHS as a criminal psychologist specialising in serial killers. She has particular reason to be good at her job - but she keeps that to herself.
When DI Bishop from the Met Police approaches Holly to investigate a recent killing, Holly is horrified by the dismembered bodies and the way in which they have been so theatrically positioned. What shocks her more is when the pathologist reveals this is not the first time she has seen these mutilations. It means a serial killer is out there, and they're going to kill again - soon.
Holly is used to chasing serial killers. But this killer has something in common with Holly that she's kept hidden for as long as she can remember. And for the first time since she was a child, Holly is forced to face the darkness of her past...

When Holly Wakefield, who works for the NHS as a criminal psychologist specialising in serial killers, is asked by the Met Police to assist in investigating a recent killing, she jumps at the chance, then the pathologist reveals this is not the first time she has seen these mutilations, which means a serial killer is out there, and they're going to kill again - soon.
This story is told from the point of view of Holly, which is a refreshing change, she also has her own demons which she tries to keep hidden from the investigating team, but secrets have a habit of coming out, the question is, will they see her in a different light when they know the truth and will she be able to help them unmask the killer before it's too late?
This is a great debut novel, in a series I hope, that we are going to see more of from this author, it's a dark and, at times, gruesome read and definitely not one for the squeamish amongst us. The plot is very unpredictable and I wasn't prepared for the jaw-dropping sting in the tail when it was finally revealed who was behind the murders. A very gripping read with lots of twists along the way.

Holly Wakefield, who has a ‘hidden’ past, is a talented criminal profiler. Due to the absence of the usual profilers Holly is called upon to assist with a macabre murder enquiry. Leading the investigation is D.I. Bill Bishop. The two form a good working relationship.
The characters are strong and well drawn although I do agree with another reviewer that Holly does seem to take over the investigation, which is highly unlikely (unless it’s fiction as this is).
The author throws a number of good ‘red herrings’ into the mix and a particularly unforeseen twist towards the end. All in all good and well worth a read.
