In an upscale L.A. neighborhood, a backyard renovation unearths an infant’s body, buried sixty years ago. Soon thereafter, in a nearby park, another disturbingly bizarre discovery is made not far from the body of a young woman shot in the head. Helping LAPD homicide detective Milo Sturgis to link these eerie incidents is brilliant psychologist Alex Delaware. But even the good doctor’s vast experience with matters both clinical and criminal might not be enough to cut down to the bone of this chilling case. Backtracking six decades into the past stirs up tales of a beautiful nurse with a mystery lover, a handsome, wealthy doctor who seems too good to be true, and a hospital with a notorious reputation—all of them long gone, along with any records of a newborn, and destined for anonymity. But the specter of fame rears its head when the case unexpectedly twists in the direction of the highest echelons of celebrity privilege. Entering this sheltered world, Alex little imagines the macabre layer just below the surface—a decadent quagmire of unholy rituals and grisly sacrifice.

I have rad this book twice, and it's not my go-to favorites Alex Delaware novel. Babies, get to me. But that aside, this book is excellent and it has the same quality you expect from all Jonathan Kellerman's work.

Start with the first Alex Delaware novel and don’t stop! Jonathan Kellerman is the best of the best! I still learn something new with every book I read.

Time and effort are put into each novel and it really shows….especially when you see what other authors crank out. I appreciate everything Mr. Kellerman puts in his craft.

A good read. Slower pace than others. I’ve read too many “Reacher”, that’s why.
Anyway it’s was a good read.
Thank You

This LA police procedural has a fascinating plot. The characters are well drawn and the murders are murky, a cold case linked to a current one, both deeply disheartening. The lieutenant detective on the case is droll and hard-boiled.

The problem is the narration by the volunteer social psychologist (Dr. Alex Delaware). Annoying in his optimism, he sees life through the eyes of Mary Poppins. Even when he's spinning his wheels, he's getting some exercise. So charming and well educated that suspects, disturbed, and ordinary people spill the beans or see the light with a minimum of prodding. He's tall and handsome, too, with a beautiful, well-connected artist-wife and an adorable dog that smiles.

Still the mystery is deep enough to hold the reader's interest.

The first Delaware book was published in 1985. If he was 32 years old then, he is now about 60. Not too old for some action, Kellerman fortunately does not favor manly physical fitness so common in many other thrillers, police procedurals and some such.

Since no more than one Delaware story is (typically) published in one year, it is difficult to remember how this good gentle and very smart PhD (not an MD) evolved. The author keeps him in the present using many gadgets that did not exist in 1985 without overdoing it.

The author (living, I think, in the LA area) seems to be getting more cynical about his la-la land. Two explanations: Kellerman is aging or everything is getting crazier and crazier. Or a combination of both.

Bit demanding read especially for a reader not born as an English speaker. Can anyone, please, explain to me what an 'aspergian algorithmer' is? I have no idea how one builds algorithms based on Asperger syndrome. Bing (MS version of Google) hints something about 'procrastination'. Maybe one of the reviewers here can help me.

Only four stars - the story is only borderline plausible.

This was a fast read, but fascinating nonetheless. I am moving on to the next in the series and can’t wait to read it.

Mysteries are not necessarily my genre, and that's the only reason for four stars instead of five. When I am in the mood I always hope for something new by Jonathan Kellerman. This story is intriguing and a fun read. It's a good mystery that defied my ability to guess exactly what the answer to the tiny infant skeleton and the dead young woman could be. For anyone not familiar with the Alex Delaware series, I would have to say that I keep returning to them because I've grown fond of the characters. They are interesting and very human. While the story is most important and the books are not truly character studies, I've grown fond of Alex Delaware, the child psychologist with a good and decent heart. He enjoys working closely with the police and helping to solve mysteries. In particular he works with his cop friend Milo, and I always look forward to finding out how Milo is doing since he's got a tough job and doesn't take great care of himself. Robin, Alex's girlfriend is another character who is really only on the fringes in most of Kellerman's stories yet I've grown fond of her and might even recognize Robin and Alex (if they were walking their French bulldog!). In short, for a great escape of a read, peopled with characters you'll want to keep knowing, I recommend any Jonathan Kellerman and this latest is no exception.

The plot itself is not that well thought out - especially the exaggerated horror on discovery of a set of bones of a baby - even without knowing how old the remains are. Certainly prima facie, this discovery does not warrant the attention of Lt. Milo Sturgis. The ending is convenient. As if the author had run out of time and wraps it up quickly.

I eagerly follow Jonathan Kellerman's series of Alex Delaware mysteries but the last two I've read, "Killer" and "Guilt" were sadly disappointing. The plot line of "Guilt" begins with the discovery of the remains of an infant that had been buried for sixty years and progresses - ever so slowly - through a copycat crime to a series of disappearances and murders involving the Hollywood elite. In an earlier volume, Mr. Kellerman used an antagonist who closely resembled Michael Moore, the so-called social activist. In this story the leading characters are thinly disguised versions of Angela Jolie and Brad Pitt. In addition to this "A list" couple there are scores of supporting characters that are uninteresting stereotypes and immaterial to the plot. Mr. Kellerman spends almost as much time describing Los Angeles as he does describing the plot. I know this author is capable of much more. Even Milo Sturgis comes across as flat and unsympathetic. The result is 423 pages of tedium.
