“Foster is in top form here, entertainingly mixing politics, comedy, and intriguing alien anthropology.”—Booklist

Abducted by aliens to be sold as pets in a more civilized part of the galaxy, earthlings Marcus Walker and a scruffy dog named George (speech-enhanced to increase his market value) have managed to escape their captors. Walker loves being humankind’s first galactic traveler—until he remembers he hasn’t a clue where home is or how to get there. So the erstwhile commodities broker becomes a chef, whipping up delicacies for demanding alien palates. Of course he never imagined that the way back to Chicago would involve swapping his easy-living adopted planet for an all-out, age-old war many parsecs away. But hey, it’s all for a good cause, he has George and their two fellow escapees for company, and what else is there to do, besides avoid nasty aliens? Plenty, as it turns out.

“An enjoyable read . . . Foster’s writing is smooth and his characters engaging.”—SFReader

“Sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, and always entertaining.”—

From the Back Cover

Successful Chicago commodities broker abducted by aliens
Not a headline from the National Enquirer, just Marcus Walker's own little Jerry Springer moment. He was indeed hustled aboard an alien Vilenjji starship, part of a cargo of primitive creatures bound for the "civilized" part of the galaxy, where they'll be sold . . . as pets. Fortunately, there was another Earthling aboard, a scruffy dog named George who'd been speech-enhanced to increase his market value. Walker had spoken to plenty of dogs in his line of work but never to actual animals. He and George formed an immediate bond, giving new meaning to "man's best friend."
The Light-Years Beneath My Feet finds Walker and George free at last, having managed, with some outside help, to outwit their kidnappers. But now they are a million billion miles from Earth. Walker glories in the wonders of his rescuers' hi-tech world and the thrill of being humankind's first galactic traveler-until he remembers the only place he wants to be is home. To take his mind off the depressing fact that he hasn't the slightest idea where home is, never mind how to get there, the erstwhile commodities broker becomes a chef.
Walker never imagined that whipping up delicacies for demanding alien palates would lead to a possible way home-or that the possible way home would involve swapping his easy-living adopted planet for an all-out, age-old war many parsecs away. But hey, it was all for a good cause, he has George and their two fellow escapees for company, and what else was there to do, besides avoid Vilenjji? Plenty, as it turns out. . . .

I have read it five times at least and love it every time note this is part of a three book series and this is the last book of that series so you might want to start with the first one first

This continued the tale of Marcus and his unconventional friends. I very much enjoyed it, and smirked at the sense of humor the dog possesses. Thumbs up!

Not a stand alone novel. The story continues the saga of the hapless abductees in their interplanetary adventures. Mr Foster is a master story teller, in this case with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek. There are no horrors or mind bending concepts here. Just light-hearted sci fi adventure with more in common with a Hitch Hicker than say a Jedi or a Star Fleet officer.

The Human Marc Walker, the dog George, the Tuuqalian Braouk and the K'eremu Sque, all having been abducted from their respective homeworlds by the profit-centric Vilenjji in the previous novel, Lost and Found, now find themselves on the world of Niyu. There, this unlikely quartet try to enlist the aide of the Niyyuuan authorities in their attempt to return to their respective worlds. But the Niyyuuans are disinclined to help the group of aliens because Walker has certain talents that the Niyyuuan find valuable. So, it is left up to Walker and his motley bands of comrades to manipulate the situation; to get the Niyyuu to actively and vociferously aide in the hunt to find their homeworlds.

The Light-Years Beneath My Feet does not live up to the rollicking romp through space that its predecessor, Lost and Found, provided. The internal machinations and plotting within plots is simply not described all that well. Some of this is made up by the admittedly interesting Niyyuuan culture of traditional warfare to solve economic and other disputes between rival nations. And the Niyyuuans themselves were characterized well; everything from their physical descriptions to their cultural eccentricities were believable. But the overall plot of getting Walker and his friends home just moved to slowly and seemed to get mired down in the very Niyyuuan culture that did make the story worth turning pages.

Overall, The Light-Years Beneath My Feet wasn't a grand follow up to its predecessor, but it was decent enough to make me want to pick up the concluding volume in a trilogy that has held my attention reasonably enough.

I enjoyed this but not as much as the first. A bit too much military manipulations for me personal taste. But the saga continues.

Abducted by aliens who intend to sell him as an exotic pet, Marcus Walker manages to break free, but one giant problem remains, he is stranded in a part of the the galaxy that never heard of humans, nor what or where Earth is. The Galaxy had better solve this problem, and soon, because there won't be any peace for anyone till this human and his friends find their homes again. Lighthearted but thoughtful, this story is one not to miss, written by a master story teller

What’s not to like.... it’s a good yarn by Alan Dean Foster. Definitely not better than book one but interesting enough on its own....I like the adventure of this series...

If you like Alan Dean Foster, this is a great representation of his style and plot formation. Part of a three part series that has a very interesting start but ends less so. Still worth the time to read.

I have read quite a few of Alan Dean Foster's books and wanted something to take my mind off the current Covid 19 crisis. This story has helped me to relax and think about something else, very clever plot device to use cooking as a strength of one the main characters. Another great inventive series by Alan Dean Foster.

price and condition good, story centers around aliens wanting to go home. More could have been done to end this or at least to suggest another book. Still, a good Foster read
