Purchase options and add-ons

Like On a Pale Horse, this second, complete-in-itself novel of the Incarnations of Immortality is a richly imagined and always fascinating story. And again, Piers Anthony adds to his gripping plot a serious, though-provoking study of good and evil.

When life seemed pointless to Norton, he accepted the position as the Incarnation of Time, even though it meant living backward from present to past.

The other seemily all-powerful Incarnates of Immortality—Death, Fate, War, and Nature—made him welcome. Even Satan greeted him with gifts. But he soon discovered that the gifts were cunning traps. While he had been distracted, he had become enmeshed in a complex scheme of the Evil One to destroy all that was good.

In the end, armed with only the Hourglass, Norton was forced to confront the immense power of Satan directly. And though Satan banished him to Hell, he was resolved to fight on.

A great story and read. I loved the 1st book and loved this one, too. I can’t wait to get started on the 3rd book.

2nd book of great series ... I'm a sci-fi fan not usually a fantasy guy ... this is best of best right behind Zelazny's Amber Series.

It was kinda grinding at parts. Because the writing got lazy. It was like split infinity in a way. You wanna know about the incarnations but get sidetracked into weird quests and shallow characters that should belong in a comic book.
Might be good as an audiobook.

I wonder why more people have to be told that they are speaking to an Incarnation when so far 2 of them have acted openly?

Norton is a great character that you grow to love but this book was kind of a bore. The powers of time are nowhere near as interesting as the powers of death (from the first book, On A Pale Horse). And I found there was quite a bit more filler in this book than there was in the first. In the first book, There was a decent enough section of Zane getting used to his powers as Death and how he truly affects people while Norton really just seems focused on fixing his own personal situation with his newfound powers and when he realizes he can't, He kind of goes through the motions of the job.

The plot ties with the first book so I give credit for Piers Anthony on that one. I just think that despite being a fast read, It's boring. The plot starts off well enough but the moment he gets the power of time, It all goes downhill. It's very recycled, plotwise, from the first book and fails to keep you interested. I wish he had gone in another direction with it.

I read these years ago and loved it. I’m passing it on to my nephew and he is really enjoying it as well.

I love the way Piers Anthony writes since I was a kid. His books are awesome they are either stand alone or as the series-- read the series! I highly recommend reading his other series and books they are well worth the read and your time

Received on time and as expected. Book is a classic. The whole series is fun, if you can get away from Piers Anthony's tendency to be creepy. In its time it was noted but ignored. Now, his attitudes toward women may be seen as pretty lecherous. Therefore, it may be offensive to this generation - that would be a shame. My suggestion is to take it with a grain of salt and see the good in this series. No matter what generation you are, you may freely ignore the 8th book which came out much later and has no excuses. 1-7 (this is 2) are still good reads.

4.0 out of 5 stars Older story, fairly good, poor proof-reading
Reviewed in Canada on November 13, 2023
I bought the first five books of the series. Given that the stories are older, I think they are overpriced, except for the first book, which was on sale.
Each of the books have about a dozen typographical errors. I reported a bunch of obvious errors for each of the books, but so far I have not been notified of any book updates; this shows the publisher/author unfortunately do not care about the quality of their product.
There are better authors on Amazon, especially for the price of the last three books.
