Agatha Raisin has always been ambivalent about holiday cheer, but her cozy little village of Carsely has long prided itself on its Christmas festivities. But this year Mr. John Sunday, a selfimportant officer with the Health and Safety Board, has ruled that the traditional tree on top of the church is a public menace; that lampposts are unsafe for hanging illuminations; that May Dimwoody’s homemade toys are dangerous for children… Things have reached such a desperate pass that the Carsely Ladies’ Society joins forces with the ladies in the neighboring village of Odley Cruesis to try to put a stop to Mr. Sunday’s meddling—only to find that someone has literally put a stop to him with a kitchen knife.

Agatha’s detective agency is on the case, but when a man has made as many enemies as John Sunday, it’s hard to know where to start…

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. In bestseller Beaton's terrific 21st Agatha Raisin mystery (after 2009's There Goes the Bride), the fiercely formidable private detective and her perky young protégé, Toni Gilmour, look into the stabbing murder of John "Grudge" Sunday, a Mircester health and safety board officer, outside a joint meeting of two Cotswolds ladies' societies. The unpopular Sunday had put a pall on the holidays by stopping the annual custom of erecting a Christmas tree atop the Carsely church tower. Millionaire and prime suspect Miriam Courtney, who threatened to kill Sunday, hires Agatha to clear her name. Complications ensue after someone strikes Miriam a fatal blow to the head. Beaton, the pen name for Marion Chesney, does a brilliant job of depicting Agatha's struggles with aging and keeping her detective agency afloat. Her romantic upheavals (will she ever marry close friend Sir Charles Fraith?) continue to tantalize.

"Beaton ... does a brilliant job of depicting Agatha's struggles with aging and keeping her detective agency afloat. Her romantic upheavals (will she ever marry close friend Sir Charles Fraith?) continue to tantalize."--Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) "Testy Agatha, continuing her habit of falling for unsuitable men, scores again with a cunning mixture of satire and mystery."--Kirkus Reviews "Beaton is a master of the cozy formula — there are plenty of red herrings, a large cast of suspects and an eagle-eye view of village life."--RT Book Reviews

I really have thorougly enjoyed reading all of the Agatha Raisin mysteries which are set in the lovely Cotswolds of England. Busy Body was another good one. I finished the book in a day and by the time I read the last sentence I was wishing there was another one to continue the story. I find all the characters in the book enjoyable and of course, Agatha is simply fantastic! Very entertaining.

Agatha Raisin, M.C. Beaton's brash and bold London PR executive turned small town detective, returns in another cozy mystery. Always vulnerable at Christmas, Agatha flees to Corsica to celebrate her aloneness in private. Things go awry and she returns to her home in the English Cotswolds only to find a murder most foul. John Sunday, the self-appointed destroyer of holiday merriment, is stabbed to death in full view of the Ladies Society meeting.

Agatha plunges into solving the murder while another ensues. She saves her perky young assistant Toni from roommate disasters and fends off an amorous suitor for her. And finally, in a brilliant and heretofore unknown to Agatha, wild car chase, the culprits are brought to justice and Agatha receives her accolades. Help has come from an almost forgotten former husband, James Lacey, and the reader may wonder if that flame could be re-lit. Even though Agatha's vulnerable heart has been temporarily led down a thorny path by a flashy younger man, someone else is on his knees proposing marriage to her. Will Agatha ever find love? Old favorites like Mrs. Bloxby, Ron Silver, and Bill Wong are present as the madcap adventures of Agatha continue.

This series started out lighthearted but has become much darker. Part of it is the darkness of Agatha's character. It's like she has never been happy, doesn't know how to be, doesn't know she isn't happy. She is like the proverbial rat in the maze looking for the cheese and frantic to find it. All the time she is looking for some young, handsome man to love her she prevents that happening in every way she can and if she found it she wouldn't know what to do with it. I enjoy all these books not so much for the mystery story though I consider them all to be good. What I find fascinating is the unchanging of Agatha and the unchanging of all the characters who appear in each book. I love these books. They are certainly DIFFERENT.

One of the best Agatha Raisin mysteries yet. It shows a maturity in the protagonist that I haven't seen before. The plot was more detailed making the book seem longer (in a good way) and less predictable in outcome. I enjoy these mysteries for pure entertainment and appreciate the unique cast of characters and quaint English setting.

As usual M.C. Beaton has written a winner. The book was entertaining and fun, which on the face of it seems an odd thing to say about a murder mystery, but it is true. The murders are not too grisly, it is the mystery solving which takes center stage. Agatha is a treasure. I love that the heroine is not some tall, sleek young blond. Agatha is a real woman. She struggles with weight, men, and emotions common to us all. I am sure if Agatha lived nearby, we would be friends. I look forward to my time with her. I brew a cuppa, include a couple of my favorite chocolates, put my feet up and go to Agatha-land.

Ths is a very confusing book. Two murders and you have trouble keeping the characters straight.

The section about the twins is just terrible. Makes absolutely no sense.

I have read all the author's books and this one is at the bottom of my list!

She has even thrown in James for a line or two to help solve the crime. That is really unbelievable! James in the South of France discovers two of the missing subjects ,by chance!

Dear, me this is just amazingly bad!

I have loved Agatha Raisin books since the very first one. There have been a couple that didn't seem quite up to par but this is certainly not one of those. This time there are two murders to be solved, even more attempts, Sir Charles softens up a bit and James Lacey is briefly back in Aggie's life. All in all a totally satisfying visit to the Cotswalds.

Agatha Raisin is her best at snarling and behaving badly, yet there is something endearing about her...a woman who is aging and hates it.really identifies with older readers like myself.
