THE #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER

The larger-than-life journey of an 18-year-old college freshman who set out from his dorm room to track down Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, and dozens more of the world's most successful people to uncover how they broke through and launched their careers.

The Third Door takes readers on an unprecedented adventure—from hacking Warren Buffett's shareholders meeting to chasing Larry King through a grocery store to celebrating in a nightclub with Lady Gaga—as Alex Banayan travels from icon to icon, decoding their success. After remarkable one-on-one interviews with Bill Gates, Maya Angelou, Steve Wozniak, Jane Goodall, Larry King, Jessica Alba, Pitbull, Tim Ferriss, Quincy Jones, and many more, Alex discovered the one key they have in common: they all took the Third Door.

Life, business, success... it's just like a nightclub. There are always three ways in. There's the First Door: the main entrance, where ninety-nine percent of people wait in line, hoping to get in. The Second Door: the VIP entrance, where the billionaires and celebrities slip through. But what no one tells you is that there is always, always... the Third Door. It's the entrance where you have to jump out of line, run down the alley, bang on the door a hundred times, climb over the dumpster, crack open the window, sneak through the kitchen—there's always a way in. Whether it's how Bill Gates sold his first piece of software or how Steven Spielberg became the youngest studio director in Hollywood history, they all took the Third Door.

A thrilling adventure, and giant lesson in having the courage to try
I first heard about Alex while perusing through the 30 under 30 lists in 2015, a distinction he received for his work in Venture Capital. Intrigued by his accomplishment but knowing little about his adventures, I decided to follow along via social media. After keeping tabs on his journey in the years that followed, I was definitely excited to finally read what became The Third Door, but admittedly didn't know what to expect. My inclination was that it would be much like any other business book about success -- a collection of anecdotes that deliver life lessons. An interesting read, but perhaps, like many similar books I've read in the past, nothing life-changing.I am thrilled to admit that I was wrong. The Third Door is nothing like any business or self-help book I've ever read. It reads as a thrilling adventure, one that, if I didn't know was real, I'd be convinced was fiction. But what's so special about it is that though his story is larger than life, Alex's relatability and vulnerability shine through on every page. A book like this can easily come across as pretentious, but there was none of that to be found. Instead, you're treated to two equally fascinating storylines that are perfectly intertwined. The first is Alex's outward journey -- the powerful lessons from the successful people he seeks out (some of my favorites were Maya Angelou, Jessica Alba, and Quincy Jones), the adventures and missteps in getting to each person, his unwavering dedication to his mission, and perhaps my favorite, the friends and mentors he meets along the way. The insights that actually hit home the most for me were the nuggets of practical advice and challenges from his mentor/best friend Elliott (who, though not as 'famous' is just as incredible as any of the main features in this book). The second storyline, and what makes this book human and whole, is Alex's inward journey. He displays a great deal of self-awareness and reflection and is unafraid to bring the reader along while he gains an understanding of himself, his blind spots, the valuable lessons he learned from his sisters, and the first-hand interaction with the preciousness of life after his father's heartbreaking diagnosis. This book is a page-turner and a coming of age story with universal appeal for sure, but beyond that, it is a lesson in optimism, resilience, and how incredible (and even 'successful') life can be if you have the courage to try.So thank you Alex, for this reminder that is relevant at any age and stage of life. And to anyone reading this review, buy the book, read it, believe it, and share it. It's a story that deserves to be heard.

Had this on my wishlist for a while, and not sure why I waited so long to read, but it's honestly life-changing. I love that Alex talks about the difficulties he encountered along the way. Makes the book authentic and inspiring. I read a lot of books, and this one has stuck with me. It's a simple, quick read, but very impactful.

I do find it interesting that a book about how the world's most successful people launched their careers has surprisingly little about how the world's most successful people launched their careers. I would bet that less than 20 pages are devoted to that topic and about half of that information is something I have heard, read, or watched before. The business information presented in this book can easily be found with some simple googling.

That said, I did find it to be a very entertaining book. The author is a very inspiring guy in terms of his tenacity to reach his goal of creating this book and I was more impressed by the work he put in rather than the book itself. It's a fairly quick read, and its a fun book, but I'm still waiting on the book about how the worlds most successful people launched their careers.

I’m in DC for the first time and instead of visiting Museums, I’ve been cooped up at a coffee shop reading The Third Door and I don’t regret a single second.

I’ve read dozens of biz and self-help books, and self-published a few myself, and I am blown away at your story.

You live your life with boldness and courage. You also are a fantastic writer that knows how to tell good stories. It’s been a long time since a non fiction book can make me smile, tear up, and cover my mouth eagerly waiting to read the rest of the paragraph.

I would like to share with you some of my favorite quotes with additional notes from the book.

Quotes:

- “What’s the Tube?”

- “So I spent some time that morning wondering what Elliott would wear.”

- “Mystery makes history? Are you insane?”

- “When the White House calls, you answer.”

- “It was like a business casual Running of the Bulls.”

- Yes, Mom, I’m thinking. Have you ever tried thinking?”

- “I didn’t know what to say, so I did the only thing I could think of — I stuffed an egg roll in my mouth.

“It dawned on me that advice from Bill Gates was never my Holy Grail. My mistakes on my way to get to him were what changed me the most.”

Patterns I’ve seen:

- “You didn’t hear this from me, but...”

- “I’m not supposed to tell you this, but...”

- “I usually don’t do [activity], but...”

Notes:

- I think people underestimate how much you worked for everything. The obsession over every guest with extensive prep work. The perseverance to get blacklisted. To be creative and use every resource you can. I don’t think anyone can safely claim you got “lucky.”

- Even when you got rejected, like to have a meeting with Buffet, you got 6 free passes to Ohama which is still a win. Most people just never ask.

- When you asked Pitbull, “What was your level one?” I felt so happy for you. That is a GREAT question. Good on you for listening to Cal and applying his advice despite fears/doubts.

- Elliott sounds like an amazing human being. I have also done extensive research on who is he but few sources actually told his full story. Your book made me love him even more.

Final thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed the book very much. It very accurately describes my unconventional path after dropping out of school as well. I will recommend this to any young person who asks me for advice. Thank you for writing it, Alex!

I purchased the third door on audible after a recommendation from the productivity expert himself Ali Abdaal. The book went well above my expectations. It takes a totally different stance to the majority of the books in the self help sector. The book takes you on the journey with Alex and the lessons / takeaways are learnt along the way. Amazing story and still a great read even if your not looking to takeaway any of the self help lessons.

I have been going through a phase where I had to make a decision : keep believing in my journey or cut it short and save myself the "fake hopes"
I couldn't sleep for nights because both decisions seemed logical. I needed a sign not to give up. And this book was hanging on my Kindle library and I remembered that I purchased it because the book title spoke to me. I remember how I thought "oh this author seems to have started just like me because I have this third door mindset" but I only decided to read the book yesterday, because I was feeling almost desperate and wanted to give up. I couldn't stop reading the book. I spent the whole night reading it. I cried, I laughed but most importantly I got an answer : "you're on the right path, girl. Keep going. It's possible" thank you so much Alex

I met Alex in November of 2018 where he invited me as one of his personal guests over Instagram to his keynote at the World Trade Center. I took a 15-hour bus ride from Toronto to New York to make it happen. It was that well worth it. Alex himself is electrifying. His presence and his energy is one people want to be around and he emits an aura that radiates and affects people.

It feels that way when you’re reading (and listening!) to his book. Effectively enough, it’s like the words are jumping off the page and although considered a business book, it feels like an adventure novel that has me on the edge of my seat. The Third Door was hands down the fastest I had ever read a book. I read it in one sitting. The words were just begging to be read and Alex has a way of drawing you in, making you feel like you are a co-pilot on his journey. The biggest takeaways for me were fully believing that:
- There is always, always a way.
- When you change what you believe is possible, you change what becomes possible.

I gravitate towards Alex’s book because I see myself reflected in it.

It feels fitting that I am writing this book review while I am on the plane to LA. This isn’t just any plane ride for me though. This is a plane ride that is realizing a 5 year dream of mine. This is the type of Plane Ride that has the same tone of when Alex finally meets Bill Gates and he reflects on every moment it took to get there. The red scarf. The endless phone calls. The rejection letters. The crouching in the bathroom, and the interviews. For me, this entire plane ride has been myself reminiscing on everything it took for me to get here, to finally obtain my visa and to finally move to LA. The struggle of the home situation, the conversations with certain people, the realization that nobody was holding me back except for me. All to change a self-limiting belief and to work SO hard to make a dream happen.

I have my utmost and wholehearted support behind this book and Alex Banayan himself. Having read his book, gifted his book to people 10+ times (and had these friends gift the book to others), met him him in person, and listened to him on numerous podcasts and a speech in person by him—I know that he is a wholesome human. They say to be wary of meeting your idols for they may have a different way of behaving that what you’ve perceived. Alex is exactly who he is across all his mediums and smashes that fear-based stereotype. He cares. His message is coming from a place so deep in him that’s unshakeable and resonates hard. This is the book I recommend to everyone first and has maybe, just maybe knocked off Outliers as my favourite book at the moment.

Anyway I’m sitting on my flight from Toronto to LA about to land and my copy of the third door signed by Alex himself is in my bag. There’s something comforting knowing that these people are out there. The ones who are chasing their dreams + creating their lives. And if you have a dream that wants to be realized, highly recommend picking up the Third Door and gifting yourself a solid evening to read it. Having read the book, I am better because of it and the experience of reading it and the knowledge within it are well worth it.
