Between reviewers complaining about either not enough heat or going through the 1lb tanks too quickly, I was a bit confused... If the unit gave off more heat, wouldn't it go through a tank even faster? In any case I have an adapter hose so I just hooked it up to a 20lb tank. The unit has a convenient notch in the base for the hose to go through, so it will sit level on my patio table. If you do go this route I would suggest that when shutting down the heater you first shut off the gas at the tank and wait until the burner goes out before turning the heater's control knob to the off position.
One thing that they could have done better with is the heat reflector on the top of the unit. The bottom of it is brushed (dull) metal. This cuts down on the amount of heat that is reflected outward. Measuring the top surface temperature versus a full sized outdoor heater shows a 40 to 50 degree (f) hotter surface on the table top unit. It would also be nice if the reflector was a bit larger. I think this would help the heat radiate out further. One modification that I did is replace one of the top posts with a threaded rod and some nuts so that I could angle the reflector to one side. This helps direct the heat when there's no one on the other side of the table.
Update: 12/20/2017
Now that the weather is getting colder I started having issues with the pilot light going out when I let go of the gas control knob. I found out quite by accident that if I let go very s-l-o-w-l-y it is much more likely to stay lit and allow me to turn the gas all the way up without going out.

Assembly wasn't difficult. The chief problem was lighting the unit. According to the instructions, you must rotate the control knob to the 'pilot' setting, keep it depressed for 30 seconds or so, in order for the lines to be purged, and then light it using the spark device (just like a BBQ). What I found was that I have to hold the control knob depressed for at least several minutes before the pilot light would be lit. Once the pilot is burning, you have to continue to hold the control knob depressed... presumably, because it heats an internal thermocouple that permits the pilot to stay lit while you turn the knob to either the LO setting, or the HIGH setting.
I did call the factory for support. After 20 minutes, without a response, I took the option to leave my phone number for a call-back... but no one ever called.
Despite the hassle in getting the thing to light, I still like the unit.
EDITED TO ADD: I've dropped the review by one star, because of the continuing difficulties in getting the thing lit. However, I did devise a work-around: I keep a small propane torch nearby, the kind that uses disposable 1 Lb propane containers. By lighting the torch, and sticking the business end up one of the vent holes just below where the pilot light is, I can get the pilot to light immediately... no muss, no fuss. The unit continues to throw comfortable heat down towards my deck chair, on cold mornings. Evidently, the problem is the piezo igniter.... it's either weak, or poorly positioned.

It arrived quickly and was fairly easy to put together. The top "umbrella" is thin metal and was dented. Because our guests were coming that day we opted not to return it and instead gently hammered the dent out. It gives off really good heat for 3-4 people sitting close together. The heat doesn't travel outward very far, it is more downward. We put tinfoil our table to reflect more heat.
A great little unit. Should not be placed under a patio umbrella though.
