Stand to Horse Paperback – January 1, 1968

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 100 ratings

To Ritchie Peters, a raw recruit in the First Dragoons, the winter of 1859 when he was first stationed at Santa Fe was a tough one. The Apaches attacked and raided in even the foulest weather, and the dragoons had no choice but to go after them, often to meet death by violence, starvation, or freezing. Ritchie slowly adjusted to this life of great hardships, but also of deep loyalties and friendships, and eventually came completely under the spell of this strange and fascinating country. He had "drunk of these waters" and was "part of this land."

Love McCaffrey’S interpretation of the Arthurian Legend. Being a horse person herself, she was curious about the origin of horses large enough to carry knights into battle. Story told from perspective of young man who aids in the purchase of original Libyan breeding stock (sound rather like modern day Fresians) and then enters Arthur’s service at the horse farm. Fascinating and unexpected story. Definitely worth reading again (originally read it many years ago). Just wish it was available on Kindle as I have limited bookshelf space. Definitely recommend this book.

When I got this book I wasn't sure if it was going to be any good, but it was. Just goes to show you can't judge a book by its author. To me Andre Norton meant science fiction not Westerns. Back when I was a kid was the first time to read this author and I liked the books then. Now years later I have gotten reacquainted with this author. This story is set before the Civil War in the territory of the Apaches. It is more a story of one boy's journey from raw recruit to a seasoned soldier. The pacing of the story was for me very good at one moment a pleasant story of Army life then the sudden change to the harsh realities of the frontier. One thing that struck me was how there was no good guys or bad guys just people, who had to take life as it came to them. For me this book was well worth reading and I think if you enjoy a good Western then this one you should read.

Like almost all of Andre Norton's books, this was a really good story. Her research was excellent and the storyline carried me along - I couldn't put it down. If you haven't delved into her books yet, you are in for a lot of very good reading!

This is a good book with likeable cowboys, I
personally detest the portion of silly actions
which many authors think it is essential to all
western books and movies.

In my late sixties I remain amazed at the magic that springs forth from an Andre Norton construct pulling the reader along in a shared adventure. She wrote and I read: what a team!

This book hooked me with its sense of real people in a very hostile land that led to settlement of the west. Amazing men that survived the harsh country
