I'm only 4 days into the game and I feel quite confident. I'm only about 4 lessons in but I feel things are going well. I'm not trying to rush anything, just focusing on having fun while learning, and Rocksmith does just that. Now before I go any further, I have to say that I wholly understand that Rocksmith is more of a tool to allow a beginner to understand simply dynamics of guitar and memorize songs, not understanding music.
With that in mind, I'm loving the game. I've spend the first 2 days getting simple concepts down, strumming, strings, and so on. The end of day 2 I played a couple songs and it carried over into day 3. Now when I say "played songs", I meant I was able to play a few simple notes from songs. It was kind of like Guitar Hero/Rock Band is Easy mode - 1 or 2 cords shown out of every 10. But again, I'm at the very beginning stage, I was not expecting to be the next Hendrix on day 4. The great thing is that the game is very adaptive. I've found that the more I play songs and the better I get, the more notes are shown during the next time I play the song. The great thing is that if you don't do well on a song, the game tells you where you had problems and what lessons to practice to get better. And on the lessons side, as you learn them, the lessons recommend songs to play.
The video tutorials are pretty good. I had a LOT of trouble with Bends, and even the in-depth video tutorial didn't help, but after about 30-minutes of playing around, I discovered how to play them. Though I will admit, during the lessons, it did slow down the practice sections to assist my learning.
Again, I'm only 4 days into the game, but I'm liking it. I do feel that there are some instances where having a knowledgeable person close by would be a great help, but at the same time, if you're driven, you can figure out some of your problematic areas and in time fix them. Though what took me 30-minutes to figure out, could have been solved in less than 5-minutes had I had an experienced player watching me play to see my error(s).
But for someone looking to get into guitars, this is a great first step. Following the 60-days with this game, I plan on getting together with a music coach and better understand music and enhancing my playing.
The game is dynamiced to work with bass and electric guitars as well as rhythmic guitars. Though I could not get my 6-string guitar to adapt well with the bass guitar (4-string) lessons.
Getting good in a skill or riff will get noticed and the game will expand the required fingering to resemble cord or actual progression more. Or, if you're like me, it'll notice you are suffering and will simplify the required fingering and get you back in synch.
The game includes an array of simulated equipment, amps, pre-amps, stacks and effects pedals. You're gonna have to spend a considerable sum to get something like that IRL.
Song choice is good and I've had fun with Session play. The lessons are slightly dry but easy to grasp and emulate. It shows up when you hit a relevant song.
Husband of Brianna,
Brandon
