I must say that based on the price and the simplicity of chromebooks, I wasn't really expecting much - Just a cheap portable laptop that I could use to check emails, surf the web, and upload photos. But so far, I've been very impressed. Sure, the chromebook won't give you the flashy technical specs that a higher-end laptop can offer, but I can honestly say that after switching to chromebook, I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.
Something about the chromebook OS is just so elegantly simple that I find myself wondering why I ever needed any of those other features to begin with. It boots up in about 10 seconds and immediately you're up and running. No lengthy setups or annoying programs to install and update. Just power on and go.
The good:
- Portability - I'm very impressed with the size and weight of this laptop, but even more so with the portability of the charger. I was expecting to have to lug around a giant brick adapter, but the included charging cord is about the same size as a phone charger. Nice. The laptop itself is smaller and lighter than I expected, but still doesn't feel cheap or flimsy.
- Battery - They advertise this as having a 13 hour battery, so of course I was skeptical. Since I've only had this for a day so far, I still have yet to reach that mythical 13-hour mark, but based on my usage so far I think it might just be possible. After 6-hours of continual use yesterday (including streaming music on youtube, uploading photos to drive, and surfing the web) I ended up at about 47% battery life. So realistically, I'll probably end up getting about 10-11 hours of use on an average charge (still amazing), but I could see a 13-hour lifespan with low screen brightness and simple operation.
- Quality - Again I was impressed here. The laptop feels sturdy and the plastic feels durable despite its light weight. Obviously it isn't going to be at the same level as a macbook, but hey - what did you expect. For what I paid, I am extremely satisfied with the build quality. I'm pretty confident that this thing can withstand 4 months of being jostled about on buses, planes, and boats.
The keyboard also works well. the keys have a nice feel to them layout feels the same as any other laptop. The trackpad has also been working well, but I have noticed it "catching" a few times so far. Hopefully, this won't be too much of a problem in the future - I'm hoping that once the laptop is "broken in" this will go away, but thought this would be worth mentioning.
And finally, performance - Again, I was impressed here. I currently have 13 tabs open (I'm a multi-tasker) with no noticeable lag in performance. In fact, I have yet to experience any dip in performance since I've started using it. I attribute this to the simplicity of the OS. Sure you don't have the same operating power as a higher end laptop, but you also don't have as many applications and programs that you need to operate.
Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with this laptop. It gives you good quality and performance at a reasonable price, and the elegant simplicity of the chrome OS leaves you wondering why you ever needed windows or mac OS in the first place.
After much research I selected the Asus C201. It's price is very competitive at 169 for 2GB and 189 for 4GB currently. It was in the range of what I would consider much more disposable than my primary laptop or a high end tablet. I was also very concerned with battery life as I want to be able to have it last through long flights. Rated at 13 hours, but with real world use coming in probably at 9-10, the fan-less ARM based CPU makes this machine ideal for long journeys or adventures.
I originally went with the 2GB version seeking to stay near the same price as the Acer that competes at this price point. However, while I found the 2GB version preformed excellent in almost every way, especially browsing the web with multiple tabs open, video playback while good, was noticeably choppy when playing difficult scenes with a lot of panning and action like the beginning of The Martian or Pacific Rim battle scenes.
I upgraded to the 4GB version as the price had dropped to within 20 dollars of the 2GB. If it stays that way, don't even think about it. As several sites point out, with the advent of more Javascript on web pages (coming to most websites in the next few years), you are going to appreciate that 4GB. Think of it as very cheap future proofing.
The 4GB of Ram did the trick and now even my OCD-like obsession with perfect video playback is held in check. Don't get me wrong, I am sure the Toshiba Chromebook 2 with it's IPS display, Celeron CPU, and discreet GPU provides a superior viewing experience. That said, both the 2GB and 4GB versions are outstanding with any streaming Netflix, Youtube, Google Play, Amazon. With 4GB of ram, my "pinned" (downloaded for offline viewing) movies on Google Play went from jerky hard to watch to nearly perfect playback allowing me to immerse myself in the video. It's important to note that for some reason, the downloaded playback on Google Play is probably the hardest for the machine to handle. I discovered some advice on the web that watching your purchased Google content through YouTube plays back better. I found this to be noticeably true, though you cannot playback downloaded YouTube content as far as I know. Perhaps YouTube Red would allow you to.
I also tested the miniHDMI out and it works well. That said, I found the Asus did not perform as well driving movie playback on my 52 inch Samsung HDTV. Streaming did quite well, especially Netflix. Playing downloaded Google Play content was less than satisfying. This was not a deal breaker for me as a) I would most likely stream from this device in a hotel and thus get good performance and b) I am even more likely to bring my Roku stick for hotel use and thus not really have a need to use this device except in a pinch.
It's worth noting that Google Play playback in general didn't look as good even when I compared it watching the same movie on my Roku. It was easy to see why some dark scenes had blotchy areas of mild artifacts on the Asus, when even on my Roku on the big screen those areas didn't have refined detail and you could see some 'blocky-ness'. In the end, for me in either setting it didn't detract from the viewing experience enough to prevent immersion into the story.
I decided to explore the Asus' video playback capability for video I had ripped to MKV and M4V. While ChromeOS does support MKV, it seems to have (licensing) issues with AC3 Dolby. I was unable to get audio working on MKV using my basic Handbrake presets. I found that simply switching to M4V produced a file that the Chromebook would play both Audio and Video. Everything was perfectly synced and my rip of Star Wars IV at .7GB under an Android Tablet preset was a beautiful thing to watch. Really very enjoyable and the speakers produced very nice sound, though I plan to use headphones to watch movies most the time. The video quality on my own rip was much improved over the average Google Play video and was every bit as good as any tablet experience I had had. No jerky video. No artifacts. If you do want to play the same MKV files that run on your other machines, you can download a Chrome extension called H.265. It played my MKV files pretty well with audio. However, it stretched the video vertically a bit more than the standard player and I just really loved the way the standard player rendered the 4:3(16:9?) view.
One negative, for all Chromebooks at this point, is that unlike Android tablets, they do not allow downloading to the "external" microSD/SD cards you can put in these devices. I view this as a major blindspot for Google. In order to be cheap these devices typically only have 16GB internal storage. So they all advertise how you can put up to 128GB on an SD or microSD inside. At 35 dollars for a microSD, I thought "why wouldn't I?". What a silly constraint to place on these machines. I would buy way more Google Play content simply for the convenience of not having to rip my own videos. I could store a huge library on the thing. You certainly don't need that space for docs. most of that should go in the Cloud anyway. In the end, I am still glad for the 128GB. I will put my own content on it and have nice library of classics and Christmas movies on it. I will also hope fervently that Google wakes the heck up and realizes the incredible no cost feature enhancement they could add to the value of these machines that would have them flying off the shelves. Not to mention a tidy profit in Google Play videos. As it stands currently Netflix doesn't allow downloads at all and Amazon only for Prime members on select items. (Hey Amazon, maybe you should beat Google to the punch. Wouldn't that be fun?)
My other key use for the device was browsing, both the 2GB and 4GB versions were outstanding. I have read at lest that the 4GB will let you have more tabs open. I guess if you need that, fine. For me, it didn't matter. I browsed on both at length for several hours and found the experience just as satisfying as any of more much more expensive computers and laptops. The high ratings for the trackpad are well deserved. It handles multi-touch extremely well and it was easy to adapt to the way the device worked without even thinking about it.
In summary, if you are looking for an inexpensive device that you will primarily use online and only need to do email, movies, and documents offline (all very possible on this machine), this is a solid machine with great battery life. Yes, the Toshiba Chromebook 2 will give you a better video experience, but at 140 dollars less, less weight, and a longer battery life, I found this machine to be the perfect travel companion.
