Customers are mixed about the value of the security system. Some mention that it's good, not great, but for the price it is well worth it, a simple and affordable security upgrade. The quality video and audio is definitely worth the value, and the Arlo Pro 2's record and send without paying for a subscription. Others say that it is consuming, frustrating, and practically worthless, expensive for the overall quality, and that the plastic base station couldn't be cheaper. The show to view your cameras is basically a waste of time, and is extremely unrealistic for any property that's larger than a small single family home.

Customers have mixed opinions about the battery life of the security system. Some mention that it's good when the camera is not detecting anything, while others say that it has very short battery life. The cameras are wireless and run on a rechargeable battery, which is easy to change. However, some customers say that the battery dies every two or three days and that the location has a significant effect on the battery's life.
"...The batteries last well over 30 days and recharge quite quickly. Smart phone interface is easy and useful. Great buy!" Read more
"...- Battery life dependent on location. The more motion detected (video captured) the faster the battery dies. This is to be expected...." Read more
"...So far battery life has been good while learning what settings were best for my setup, the camera was turning on a lot because of motion and sound...." Read more
"...can not leave my camera out for a full day because the battery is that crappy...." Read more
Customers are mixed about the motion detection of the security system. Some mention that it's good, the ability to discriminate between any motion and the motion zones is a lifesaver, and that they are notified when the cameras detect movement on their phone. However, others say that the motion sensitivity is spot on, the lag is better, and the camera doesn't pick up motion in broad daylight. The downside is that the movement area function can only work if the camera is plugged in, and it doesn' t pick any motion outside.
"...The color night vision and spot light are fantastic, it can detect different types of motion so you can set it to ignore things like animals..." Read more
"...An external IR light may help with this.- Motion detection has a distance limitation. The motion detector is separate from the video...." Read more
"...The camera has great features but if you need instant recall, perfect motion detection, the ability to record 24/7, time stamps, or just don't want..." Read more
"...But there is one major issue - motion detection...." Read more

Here is what I did:
1. Remove parts from the boxes
2. Plug in controller
3. Insert battery and charge
4. Connect controller to WiFi Ethernet connection
5. Plug in the controller
6. Look around and find the on switch
7. Look around and find the WiFi Synch switch. Unless you have done hundreds of these things you may not get this far
8. Do the same for synch on the camera
9. Now what to do? I guessed there was some app from Arlo. Yep, download the app.
10. Now create an Arlo account. Never give then a credit card and most likely you have given them access to you phone, home, and total life but they all want that.
11. Load and activate the app
12. Activate the hub from the App
13. Activate the camera
14. At any step here you may mess up and get stopped but guess I was lucky
15. You can load the system on your PC
16. BUT you must allow each PC activation via your App! Real aggravating.
17. Now I have no idea what is being recorded and where it goes. So much for documentation
18. You can download stuff from the web site, takes about 10 min to find it and when you do it is useless. For example they say you can use Alexa, NOT. There is no such direction in my search, and I am good, I found the Holy Grail!
19. Now to record I use Debut Video Capture on my PC. So I do not rely on these guys
20. It has worked for 24 hours and I will now try moving outdoors.
Overall it is classic Silicon Valley in it assumes that anyone who cannot reconstruct their thinking is not worthy of their device. It works, somewhat, and at the price point if you can withstand the lack of info it may be useful.
BUT BEWARE, they seem to change the security check in method every time you access the system. Security is good BUT this bouncing around is Horrible!
UPDATE: Having used this for a month or more it works quite well. Battery lasts long stretches, video snips are quite usable, access in mobile is generally excellent. The only not is the deer in my front yard seem to turn the outside unit on all the time!
UPDATE 2: I am really start to like this unit. I have a few and the unit works well at night and records the video quite well. Resolution is good, not great, but for the price it is well worth it. It is much better than other units with high monthly usage fees and are wired. The batteries last well over 30 days and recharge quite quickly. Smart phone interface is easy and useful. Great buy!
I have been running the cameras for about a week now and here is the list of Pros and Cons and Limitations.
Limitations:
- These are battery powered, so they do not respond instantly. I find that there is about a 3 second delay time between motion detection and when the recording starts. This is to be expected, as the camera needs to "wake up" to begin capturing video/audio.
- Video is choppy/delayed. When using the LIVE camera option, the video is lagging behind real world. This makes it slow to use the intercom feature. This is significantly effected by the quality of your internet connection. I have seen up to 10+ seconds delay in video, but no effects to quality of video.
- Battery life dependent on location. The more motion detected (video captured) the faster the battery dies. This is to be expected. Mounted in my house, with 2 dogs running around, in 2 days, 40% of the batter was drained. This also had over 30,000 notifications on the app that "Motion was detected". After moving outdoors with only 3-5 triggers a day, it appears to be about 2% battery life per day. The battery's charge FAST. a couple hours and a batter is back to full charge. Depending on where you mount these cameras, it might be a good idea to purchase a spare battery and charging station. This way, if your camera is mounted up high and requires a ladder, you can climb the ladder once to swap the battery, rather than twice after the battery is changed.
Pros:
- Camera range is way better than I expected. This will vary on your placement of the base unit and the cameras, but I was shocked that I was able to place the base unit in my basement of a brick house and still have a camera mounted over 100 feet away mounted on the backside of a metal building. The signal is low, but it works. I have another camera mounted well over 225+ feet away, clear sight line, and have full signal.
- Setup was super fast. I had the cameras up and running, including unpacking and firmware updates, in less than 10 minutes.
- Because these units are truly wireless, you can mount them ANYWHERE. Not knowing where exactly I want to mount these, I love that you can move them around without dealing with running cables all over the place. If I am not happy with my placement, I simply move it, no need to run more cable, or worry that it has to be next to an outlet.
- The phone app is very nice. Getting an notification every time motion is detected is awesome. Being able to easily ARM and DISARM is easily accomplished with the app.
- having free cloud storage is a huge plus to me. while it is limited to a week, it is up-gradable with a paid account. For my use, a week of recordings is more than enough. The free account only gets you 5 cameras, and I see that being more of a limitation than the week of recording. (I don't use the constant recording option, which requires a paid account to save to the cloud. You also need to plug the camera into a power source)
- lots of add on products. Mounts, skins, solar panels.
- Firmware updates are automatically notified through the phone app. Also, since these are cloud based, with some people paying service contracts, I would expect that the firmware updates will stay current and up to date.
Cons:
- Night vision is not great. It worked well in my home while testing, but when placed outside, living in the country with no street lights, the video is basically unusable. Since I have mounted them outside, I have not see any triggers to see if the motion detector still works or not. I did notice, that when in my house, I could see on a second camera a "bright spot" appear when my first camera turned on at night. This was due to the IR lights turning on. More testing needs to be done. When going LIVE at night, in complete dark, these cameras do not work very well. An external IR light may help with this.
- Motion detection has a distance limitation. The motion detector is separate from the video. It seems that the motion detector works for about 30ish feet from the unit. Don't think that just because the camera can see it, the motion detector can detect it. I had to move a camera because of this. It would be nice if the camera was smart enough to realize, once video was being recorded, if the image was moving, the camera would continue to record. Maybe they could add this feature with a firmware update later.
All in all, these units are amazing! You cannot expect a battery powered unit to work the same as a wired unit. As long as you expect some limitations, you should be VERY happy with these cameras. I have not tried any of the features with the cameras plugged into a power source. In my opinion, if you plan to plug them in, get something more cost effective. At $200 per camera, these units only make since if you cannot run wires.
