Being the thrify sort I do consider the cost per gallon as well as the space required for anything I have tucked away for emergencies. Those hard sided water containers are very sturdy, but they also take up enormous amounts of room and 2 of them are more than the current Amazon price for the waterBob with less than 1/6th the water storage. The collapsable water carriers are smaller to store and I do have those, but they also cost more per gallon by a long shot. The disposable mylar ones are a cheap option, but they are VERY difficult to get around without puncturing.
All in all, considering space required for storage and the cost per gallon, the waterBob is by far the cheapest and best option.
Color me skeptical but I like to try everything before I trust in it during an emergency. So, I picked up one of these and used it. I filled it pretty quickly and without any mess at all. It all went into the Bob and not slopping around in the tub. The form fit the tub almost perfectly and it filled completely. The siphon thingie works fabulously and I really like how it shrinks down as the water empties and keeps air out. Nice feature there.
But, like all things, there is a catch. This product is absolutely a one use item. I fiddled about with it trying to figure out a way to re-use it if I were ever in a situation where it couldn't be replaced. And no, there's no way to dry it out. I tried a blow drier up near the tube...uh, yes, that was dumb. I tried it though. Hanging it up...nope. Not even slitting it open in a discreet location and then blow drying it out is completely clean and I would have doubts about the ability of a repair to hold under pressure.
Of course, there is the ability to keep filling it. If you are in an emergency where the water isn't flowing regularly, as long as this thing is in use there's no reason not to keep filling it up. That gives it even great value.
Overall, given the price right now on Amazon, you can store water safely for about 20 cents a gallon. That is the cheapest thing out there especially when you consider the space required when not in use. This isn't even as big as a shoe box when not in use.
NOTE: The price varies considerably on Amazon. If you want to track the price, put it on a shopping list and it will tell you when the price increases or decreases from the date when you added it. With Prime there is no shipping cost as of right now and $22 dollars or less is a good price compared with elsewhere. It will go up when a lot of people by them at once.
Cons: overall pretty cheap. The fill hose is flimsy and can get "kinked" like a garden hose slowing down the fill process. There is also no way to fix the hose to your spout, you need to use a rubber band or wire.
The siphon pump kind of stinks. I found myself just preferring to start the siphon with my mouth. Maybe my valve leaks or something. The hose for the siphon pump is also pretty short. It's long enough but only just barely. Also if the water in your tub gets lower than the bucket you are trying to fill, that's the end of the siphon. While a siphon is convenient because its labor free, you would need some sort of hand pump to get the last water out. However the capacity of the bag is large enough you would need to be without power for a very long time to lower the water lever that much. So perhaps water level is a none issue.
The worst part about this is dealing with it after you are done with it. You can use the siphon to get 90% of the water out (and only if you prop the bag up over the drain so the weight of the water doesn't seal the bag against the drain). The bag doesn't technically have a drain so you have to flip it over and use the two holes on top, and it's kind of annoying to do this. An additional drain hole in a bottom corner would have been really nice.
Overall it's not the greatest but it will without a doubt be a huge life saver during the next major power outage. In the past 10 years I have lost power for 4-7 days on 4 occasions. Lack of water is always the worst part of this. During the last storm internet was down in my whole area and stores couldn't take credit cards. I didn't have enough cash to buy water. I was collecting lake and rain water to flush my toilets. Lots of labor hauling gallons of water up from the hill and up flights of stairs. The waterbob will be a luxury in comparison.
