When I was at the lowest point in my life, my grief therapy group watched this film, The Way, written by actor Emilio Estevez and starring his father, Martin Sheen. It inspired and motivated me to walk part of the ancient 500 mile long Camino Frances of the Camino de Santiago (100 km from Sarria to Santiago) And it changed my life.
An ancient philosopher was once asked by a student, “Teacher, What do you do to gain wisdom and clarity when you feel lost at some critical moment in your life?” The teacher responded with two words: Solvitur Ambulando (Latin for: it is solved by walking).
Something in me resonated to the theme of this film and I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I started researching, googling Camino de Santiago and preparing myself for the hike. I began walking daily, my diet improved, I dropped excess weight.
And three months later I was in beautiful Spain, with the sun shining and the birds singing, walking on the thousand year old pilgrimage route through hills and valleys, past ancient stone villages to Santiago de Compostela. I met pilgrims from all walks of life wishing their fellow travelers, “Buen Camino!”, some were devout, I even walked one day with a pair of Buddhist monks. Others were not at all religious; it proved to be life altering: the best small decision of my life, with the most far reaching consequences. Like a stone dropped into a still lake produces a series of concentric circles moving outward. A wonderfully healing experience. Gracias Emilio and Martin.
For one thing, no one with any bit of hiking experience would attempt to do this trek in jeans. Another thing is that camping along the Camino is highly discouraged and illegal in most parts of the French Way. There is no need to camp if you have even a modest budget. Albergues (pilgrim hostels) are very inexpensive and usually have room for walk ins. The part about the private albergue with the insane owner was just over the top. You will not experience this on the Camino. Albergues are highly regulated in Spain.
What I did like is that you get a real flavor for the countryside and the beauty of the Camino. I recognized many of the scenes. As in the film, yo make friends while hiking the Camino, especially those that are hiking at your same speed. You see the same faces over and over and if you open yourself up, you will make new friends. Some for a day, some for a few weeks, some for a lifetime.
Overall, I give it a big thumbs up and a 5 star review. I'm looking forward to the sequel, which I hear is coming out soon.
