Here are some of my observations on the changes to the new 2014 bag:
The materials and craftsmanship are excellent as you would expect from Timbuk2. The full-cycle twill is attractive and understated, which is what I wanted.
They brought over some of the features from the Snoop that I really like, including the Napoleon pocket. The Snoop has more external organization pockets which are nice, but the 2014 has more internal pockets including a bottle pocket which is much appreciated. I would prefer maybe one or two smaller zipper closed pouches on the inside for smaller items like batteries, head phones, phone chargers etc. I’m spoiled by the Snoop which has a ton of little zip pockets.
There is no secondary strap over the laptop pouch. My older bag has a little Velcro tab that goes over the laptop and secures it in the pouch. If the bag flops over on a table or desk the laptop can slide out. This is nice piece of mind. My small bag has less padding in the laptop pouch too. I don’t know if the larger bags have more padding. My 2014 bag will only carry a Kindle (in a Timbuk2 case of course) so it’s not a big issue for me, but if I was carrying a very expensive laptop I would be pretty gentle with the bag until my confidence in the protection grew.
The jury is out on the pad design. It’s comfortable and well made of course, but if you pack your bag heavy it might not be padded enough. My Snoop has a Cadillac like thick pad which is nice for carrying a lot of camera gear (about 20 lbs for 10 hours or so). Only time will tell on the new pad. The padding may be thicker on the larger bags. If you pack heavy you might have to invest in a thicker pad.
The new quick adjust buckle is genius. One of my complaints about the older bags was how finicky it was to adjust the strap, so much so that I actually never did. I would set it at the right length and then leave it. But this new adjustment buckle allows me to adjust quickly for going over a thick jacket or just a t-shirt. I can also cinch it up tight if I have to hustle (like chasing my toddler through Disneyland). The excess length is also trapped so you don’t have a tail hanging loose to get caught on stuff. Very well done. Only downside is the limited length of the strap. I’m 5’10” with a medium build and the strap is about the perfect length for my use (note: I carry the bag up high), but someone who was taller, had a larger build, or liked the bag real low might have an issue with the strap length.
I have mixed feelings on the cross strap vs the older version. The new version has a nice elastic band that traps the tail of the strap so that when you cinch it down there isn’t anything hanging down to get caught on something. But I prefer the old quick release clip with the rotating D-ring. The new version has a Velcro attachment similar to the way the side release buckle attaches to the main strap at your chest. I don’t use this strap often but when I do I like to put it on and take it off quickly. The old style snaps on and off in seconds, and I can actually do it without looking while walking. Can’t do that with the new one. I rigged a quick release buckle to allow me to connect it fast while on the move. I think a combination of the old clip/D-ring and the new elastic keeper would be perfect.
The small is a big step down in size from the medium bags. This fits my application perfectly. I wanted something smaller for around town use vs something to lug a laptop or camera gear. But if you pack a lot of stuff, you would be better off with the medium bag.
I miss the little swirly Timbuk2 icon. I think it’s more elegant and understated than a rectangular patch.
I wish Timbuk2 included the silencer tabs like they do on the Snoop. They are a cool addition, and
Moving the buckles under the flap was a nice change. It gives the bag a clean, attractive look and reduces the chances of something getting snagged.
I’m still giving this bag 5 stars despite some of the niggling complaints I’ve mentioned. The evolutionary changes from the old style bag to the Snoop bag were impressive and welcome. The 2014 bag has improved from there; the positive changes like the pockets and quick adjust buckle easily overwhelm the minor issues. That combined with Timbuk2s well earned reputation for durability and functionality make this bag a winner.
* color: amazing. Could blend in in a dressier environment. The blue and olive are very pleasant to look at, and the orange stitching adds a subtle visual interest. Very unisex.
* size: perfect. I was worried it would be too big since im used to the small, but it looks pretty slick. I mean its large for my frame, but i dont look goofy and besides I need to carry a lot. The small didn't fit my new 15" macbook pro; this fits that comfortably, plus my lunch plus an extra layer and headphones.
* water resistance: I just got this bag yesterday and lo, it rained this morning! More details in the next bullet but its weather resistant capabilities give the old bag a run for its money. This is the main reason I love Timbuk2 and I dont understand why all laptop bags arent designed for bad weather.
Comparing to the previous iteration (my trusty 2013 version): overall improvement, heres the breakdown.
* The grab handle. So crucial. My 2013 didnt have that.
* The strap redesign. I liked that the old one had a long and short mode, and this doesnt have that, but the strap is easily adjustable and doesnt have a big loop sticking out the side. The new design keeps it more streamlined. And with the quick release I'm sure I can manage to get in and out of this with no problem. The material on the strap and strap pad are also better, the strap is a softer material (less chafing) and the pad seems to sit more securely and have a wicking layer close to the shoulder. The 2013 had the same material wrapped around the strap which meant it wasnt particularly soft against my skin when I wore a scoop neck top or anything like that.
* internal organization: same as before, minus the low quality velcro pockets which I never used.
* external organization: kept the napoleon pocket which I liked, but did away with the 3 zip pockets on top of each other. I never used those so this is a plus for me, as it makes the bag more streamlined.
* velvro: Loud as always. :) I might order silencer straps, but this isnt a dealbreaker.
* closure buckles: more sleek design, they attach under the front flap. Looks cleaner. They also double in function as cinch straps to keep the load close to your back.
* waterproofing: unlike my 2013, this one is better designed to keep water out in the corners. The edges fold over to keep rain out. We will see how this lining holds up over time, but it also looks to be better quality than the one in my old bag, which started coming apart in the last few months (rendering the waterproofing pretty useless).
* lash point for a bike light on the bottom just like the old one, and reflective patches on the buckle straps for visibility.
* attachment point for their signature secondary strap: for riding, the second strap keeps the load on your back rather than falling forward. I used this when I used to bike, it's useful for commuters.
* less branding than the old one.
Tl;dr:
Good practical size, even if its a bit bigger than the small it's so much sleeker that it doesnt look bigger (especially owing to the lack of strap loop sticking out the side). Very work appropes. Better strap and overall design than the old version. Good for crappy weather, good features for bikers and walkers. Quality keeps coming from Timbuk2. I overthink every purchase and I'm quite happy with this.

The key cord is really useful for finding a big bunch of keys, and it's long enough to use the keys in a door without detacthing them.
It's water proof, I know this because my lunch leaked _inside_ the bag and the outside stayed dry... but it was also very easy to wipe clean.
The buckles and velcro are secure and the strap is comfy.
The only flaw with it is the adjustment system to the main strap is easy to knock, then the bag drops as the strap goes to it's longest length, but some tape or something should stop that happening, and even with that I'm not marking the bag down.
