Man Cave #4

Man Buns

Rate this book
I got out of the Marine Corps to give my daughter a better life. I’m a strong and capable single dad. I got this, right? Not so much.

The one thing my daughter wants is the hardest to find — a mom. It’s not like they’re selling hot intelligent women at Walmart these days, and with the amount of baggage I’m carrying around, I might be out of luck.

Yeah, so.

We moved from Oahu to Maui. I needed a job, a place to live, and to get us settled. I thought it would be simple, but let’s just say... mistakes have been made.

· Mistake #1: I took the first job I was offered. (Should’ve probably asked a couple more questions about the required uniform.)
· Mistake #2: I flirted with Kai, the first attractive woman who crossed my path. (So far out of my league she might as well be a Hawaiian princess.)
·Mistake #3: I fell head over heels for that woman. (See Mistake #2.)

Now I’m standing here showing my butt — no, literally. It's the required uniform at Man Buns, the restaurant I’m working at. (See Mistake #1).

In any case, I can tell you one thing — it’s damn near impossible to convince the woman I can’t live without to take me seriously when I’m serving up burgers, half-naked, and women are constantly ogling my assets.

I’ve gotta try, though. Because Kai is the woman for me, and she’s perfect with Aya. I’ve just gotta get these man buns in gear and figure out how to win her over.

First off, each book in this series can be read as a stand-alone as reading Man Buns; there was no indication that it was part of a series. The book starts off with Denver trying to recruit for the Marines and then fast forwards to his last day as a Marine. Denver then moves to Maui with his daughter as he has his best friend from the Marines awaiting him with a house and a job. Things though start off a bit rocky as the house has squatters and the job requires him to wear no t-shirt and short tight shorts as a waiter for his friend's new restaurant "Man Buns" - the guy version of Hooters. During this book too, Denver meets Kai. Kai had had a hard upbringing as she was forced to grow up quickly when her parents died in an accident, and she had to look after her little sister. Her little sister is ready to marry Denver's best friend. Denver's daughter Aya wants a mother, and she has her eyes set on Kai for the role. Can Aya matchmake Kai and Denver together to make her perfect family? What happens though when a blast from the past tracks down Denver and Aya and gives him the news that she wants custody of their daughter, even though she hasn't had a thing to do with Aya since she was a babe in arms? I enjoyed Man Buns from the humor to the fact that Denver was a genuinely nice guy which often in books is hard to portray. If you are on the lookout for a fun new read with a cover that is equally awesome, then check out Man Buns by Shari J. Ryan today.

Such an awesome romantic comedy! Lots of laughs and plenty of sweet romance (with some steamy moments to be sure!) as well as some serious issues, just a really good mix because as we all know life doesn't always go the way we plan. I think this author did a great job handling the balance. Aya is a little spitfire! She reminded me so much of my monkey, right down to the sassy attitude! Denver is such a swoony hero, and Kai is perfect for him. Their dry sarcastic humor fits me to a T, which is why I laughed through most of the book. This is the perfect book for a rainy weekend, it will keep you laughing and turning the pages and it will brighten your day!

This was a beautiful tribute to a lady with an amazing sense of humor. I’m still gasping for breath because I laughed so hard through this book. Denver and Kai have enough chemistry together to power a city. And their extended families play such an integral role in this story. I don’t know if I want to find this restaurant or run screaming in the other direction. Either way, the snappy, snarky banter and innuendo-filled one-liners it generated were just something else. I’m not ready to let these characters go yet.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book.

I give this read 3.75 stars...….

I wanted to love this book.

Who doesn't love a single dad trying to raise a little by himself? This book was fun and had just the right amount of angst. It had it's laugh out loud moments. But something was missing between Denver and Kai. I just didn't feel the passion. I didn't hate the story but it wasn't one of my favorites in the series.

You know I’ve always said I wonder what a man version of Hooters would be like? Now let me be clear I probably wouldn’t go because male stripper type guys freak me out. I know I know what kind of woman am I? Well the awkward and nervous giggle kind of girl. In fact, I’m a lot like Kai plus Hooters has the best bacon cheeseburgers.

Kai has been taking care of her sister Lea since the passing of her parents. She has always dedicated her life to Lea and taking care of adult responsibilities that she has never even dated. She’s 28 and a lifeguard at the local resort in Maui. Her life is safe and comfortable but with her sister’s wedding looming on the horizon she is starting to feel alone. She meets a sexy guy and his adorable precocious daughter in the pool one day and her life takes a change. She doesn’t know much about Denver other than he sparks something in her. When she finds out he works at Man Buns she isn’t so sure anymore.

Denver is a single dad and a former Marine. He is trying to assimilate to civilian life and it’s not going so well. His friend lines him up a job at his new restaurant but fails to explain what kind of establishment it is. So, when Denver slips on those tight shorts all his pride goes out the window especially when he sees how much he makes. His thoughts keep going back to the lifeguard at the pool and how much she intrigues him. He sets out to capture her attention and bring her into the world of the living and the dating. They have sparks and they verbally spar and its magic. Plus, she just loves Aya his daughter.

This book had me laughing. I’m with Denver though who wants to eat a burger while there is man junk looking you in the face? Not me!! Reading him trying to wiggle into those shorts so reminded me of Friends and Ross and the leather pants.

Yet this book doesn’t really focus so much on Man Buns but the love story between Denver and Kai. You can’t help but love the 7-year-old going on 17 year old that is Aya. She is so funny and such a girl. Trust me her character is spot on because I am the mother to an 8-year-old who doesn’t realize she’s 8. Man Buns gives us laughs and swoon worthy moments and some drama. This is totally a book for a good fluffy read that will make you laugh and your heart swoon.

Man Buns opens with Denver leaving the Marines to focus on taking care of his daughter. He is ready for a new start. He decides to move to Maui because a friend has a job lined up for him and a place to stay. He soon discovers that the job is the male version of Hooters and they do not have a place to stay.

Kai has spent her life being the caretaker to her younger sister Lea. Lea is now getting married and Kai is struggling with letting her go. Kai currently works as a lifeguard at the hotel where Denver is staying. Kai has missed a lot on life due to taking care of her sister. Denver is just the man to bring her out of her shell. It also helps that she adores his daughter Aya.

I admit I picked this up because it was a single dad book. This had a lot of potential but it missed the mark for me. Denver’s job was not really focused on even though it is the title of the book. It felt like as soon as these two decided they liked each other the book was done. All in all this was a cute book. If you are looking for a light beach read this is probably the book for you.

Man Buns by Shari J. Ryan was a nice surprise! Light, funny, charming and sweet all wrapped up in one package. I loved the crazy characters and the story so much. I was captivated from start to finish.

Nothing was more important to Denver than his daughter, Aya, especially after her mother walked out on both of them. After years in the Marines, he decides to leave and have a fresh start for both of them. But the only thing Aya wants is a mother. So, Denver is determined to give her all he can, since he does not know if he can ever give her that.

Kai has been responsible for her younger sister since the death of her parents when she herself was very young. This caused Kai to grow up fast and delay her the opportunity to be young and carefree. Instead she was always the responsible one putting everything before herself. Now her sister is getting married and suddenly, Kai is at a loss of where that leaves her.

When Denver and Aya arrive on the island, the last thing he expects is the job waiting for him, but in the meantime, its all he has. Enter Man Buns, where the “buns” are the main attraction, literally. This was not the fresh start Denver envisioned. But when he meets Kai, the sister to his friend’s fiancé, he is immediately smitten. But who wants a man with all the baggage he carries.

Kai is attracted to Denver immediately, but does not like his choice of job, but is she being to hard on him? Knowing he finally has to take a chance, he lays on the charm to win Kai over. I loved Denver. All he ever wanted was to be a good father, but when he met Kai, he realized there could be more there. He was sweet, charming and funny. Kai was very reserved and opiniated, but we quickly learn her background and understand where she is coming. Can these two opposites find a way to meet in the middle?

Man Buns was funny and charming and had me devouring the pages. This was a great light read to get lost in. You will love the characters and they will have you laughing out loud!

“You’re a special woman, Kai. I knew it the moment I tried to bug you.”

Single dad Denver Rossdale has left the Marines and moved to a different island in Hawaii in an attempt to give his young daughter a better life. Things seem to be going well until he realizes what exactly the new job his friend set him up with entails and until his daughter keeps pressuring him to find her a mom. The sexy lifeguard he meets while at a local hotel seems like a good candidate but she’s a tough nut to crack and makes him work for it just to get her name. He doesn’t think he stands a chance with Kai but his daughter is equally as smitten with her and he can’t seem to stay away. They’ve both got baggage but Denver knows that Kai is perfect for him and for his daughter and he’s determined to get Kai to take a chance on them.

I thought this was a fun and easy read, the perfect thing for a lazy summer afternoon! It’s got plenty of jokes to make you laugh, a sassy heroine, and a sexy single dad to make you swoon. Denver was a great guy and an even better father to his young daughter, Aya. He was doing his best and I loved that he always put Aya’s needs first. I thought Kai was a great match for him, she was full of sass and wasn’t afraid to give him a hard time. She definitely had a tough shell but it was fun seeing Denver start to crack through. These two had some great banter, their teasing and flirty exchanges were a lot of fun. They also had great chemistry and I really enjoyed seeing their relationship develop. If you’re in the mood for an easy, breezy rom-com, you should definitely give this one a try!

He’s my other half, the butt of my jokes, the period to my sentences, and the sun that was missing from my sky.

Not a great start with the blurb pre-story '...It's not like they're selling hot intelligent women at Walmart...' I know it doesn't say the women working at Walmart but it still rubbed me the wrong way.

Mildly entertaining. The humour and the analogies were off but that may have been deliberate as part of the author's style. Definitely not LOL. The child was cute, sometimes. The relationship development between Denver and Kai was cute, sometimes. I believe Kai was Aboriginal Polynesian and the child half but it was not an area that was explored in depth.
It missed its mark for me but I may try another book by Ms. Ryan.

Cheers

I enjoyed this book so much, it's the perfect laugh out loud and warm your heart beach read. I love Denver, but "No" aka Kai was my favorite along with Aya, Denver's sassy little daughter, who at time steals the spotlight. Denver is looking for a place to settle down and put down roots after traveling during his career in the Marine Corps. He accepts an offer for a job from his long time friend Noa, no details needed, he needs the job. Everything happens for a reason right? If you are looking for a laugh out loud book that will have you experiencing all the feels this is the book for you!!

This was my first of the "Man Cave" stories that I've ready by Shari J. Ryan and all I can ask myself is WHY did it take me so long to finally read these. This story had the perfect about of feels, humor, snark and a little "surprise" toward the end that was unexpected, tying the story together so perfectly. Kai has given up her early adult life to take care of her sister and has never truly given herself time to live a normal young woman's life. Denver has his hands full with both his precocious young daughter Aya (who by the way I absolutely adored) and his new job working for his friend Noa at a job that was unexpected as his meeting with Kai. I love knowing that no matter how quirky one his, there is someone who is either just as quirky or more so just waiting to complete you. The perfect love story.

I loved, loved, loved this book! If you are looking for a great romantic comedy - this is it!! Shari tells a sweet story of a single dad who finds himself in an unusual situation. When Denver leaves the service to be able to spend more time with his daughter, he never thought the job his friend had for him would be so ‘revealing’. But from the moment he meets Kai, the self proclaimed ‘no’ girl, his life will never be the same. This story has some of the most hilarious moments that had me literally laughing out loud. But it also tells a story of strength and resilience and what having true friends and family really means. It’s a must read for rom-com lovers!!❤️❤️

A cute, easy to read, light-hearted romance with an Hawaiian setting

Ex-marine, Denver, movies to Maui to make a better life for himself and his daughter, Aya. His friend, who helps him find a job, is getting married and his bride’s sister is older and rather prickly. Kai raised her sister as their parents died when they were twelve and eighteen. She hasn’t had time for her own social life, nor has she had much of an interest. That is until she meets Denver and his daughter.

Fairly predictable, but nuanced romance with some funny situations and easy banter between the two main characters. There are inevitable bumps in the road, but none of the standard misunderstandings or drawn-out time apart because they don’t know how to talk to each other. The addition of a precocious seven-year-old works, and sparked my waterworks at the inevitable happy ending.

One glaring question for me was finding out about Denver's ‘nest egg’ when he was forced into taking a job where he wears only the tightest of skin-tight shorts as wait-staff at his friend’s restaurant. I get that he was saving it for college, but a small amount of it could have saved him from that humiliation. Still, it wouldn’t have fit with the title of the book I suppose.

This romance does exactly what it says on the tin, it certainly has more depth to the characters than run of the mill romances and isn’t all about getting to the sex though there is some of that in there too!

Recommended to all who love a good contemporary romance.

Shari Ryan strikes romantic comedy gold with Man Buns! Set in Hawaii, Ryan lures you into her story with the promise of sun, romance, and a marine. In Man Buns, we meet ex-Marine Denver Rossdale. Sigh… with just his name Ryan had me hooked, however it was his personality and quarter poppin man buns that had me swooning for this sexy, single dad. He was willing to do just about anything for his sweet, vivacious and hilarious little girl even if that meant getting to know the lifeguard whose closed herself off from the world.

Kai was one heroine that I couldn’t have loved more. Her strength, unconditional love, and quick witty humor was everything that I look for in a leading lady. Left to raise her younger sister, Kai put Lea first even if that meant never experiencing life for herself. Getting to read Ryan’s take on these two single parents finding love was exactly the perfect romantic comedy that I needed!

While I loved Man Buns overall story, there were a few things I would have wished Ryan would have done a little differently. Now, I’m not a huge sexy scene kinda reader. I’m more of a slow burn kinda girl. That is exactly what I felt was missing from Man Buns. I wished in the chemistry side of things, Ryan would have turned up the heat especially for the big moment in Kai’s life. I also felt like there really wasn’t enough turmoil. Kai and Denver pretty seamlessly made it work. I kinda wanted them to go through a little bit even if this was a lighthearted romance.

With that being said, Ryan continues to be one of my most favorite authors to read. Whether is the fun, flirty rom-com or the serious, deep dramas, she keeps me coming back book after book and leaves me each time being completed swept away by her stories. If you don’t take the chance on picking up any of her novels you would be truly missing out on something amazing!

Well, goodness. I did not see this piece of joy coming. Man Buns chapped my cheeks from laughing so hard. Because this book—was a hoot.

Let’s face it, the entire romance genre is all about escapism, and nothing does that better than a good rom-com. I laughed, chuckled, giggled, smirked, LOLed, snickered, snorted (don’t tell), cackled, and maybe even guffawed a time or two. When I wasn’t snickering and snorting, I was lusting over the perfection that was former Marine and single dad Denver; major hunk with the man buns extraordinaire. You gotta’ love a book that can take you from laughing to lusting in a single chapter. That’s some fine writing, there.

Speaking of fine writing, it’s really impressive when an author can swing a reader between LOL’s and OMG’s and still manage to write in some pretty amazing characters. Often times, romantic comedies rely on shallow, one-sided characters. But not here. Denver—he’s a solid keeper. From the tips of his flip-flopped toes to the top of his military-style haircut, he’s intelligent, solid, observant, thoughtful, considerate, and (oh, yeah…) sexy as a beefcake in a tuxedo. But he may have met his match with Kai, a Maui local who is gorgeous, quick-witted, selfless, and the queen of sharp-tongued banter. Lightning is a bit of a rarity in the islands, until these two get together. Then the electricity really flies through the air.

This fantastic bit of fun can be shared with your co-workers: love scenes are definitely spicy, and there is a bit of adult language in the story. As you can imagine from the title, there’s also quite a bit of double entendre going on, all in good fun. Yet with all of this, there’s still a great plot to be had, and a wonderful love story (or two) in the midst of the hilarity. What could be better than that?

Denver is one hot ex Marine who is looking for a steady job so he can take care of his daughter. He decides to move to Maui and with the help of his friend, there a a job and a house waiting for him when he gets there. Denver doesn't know anything about the job or house but trusts his friend to help. Everything falls through when Denver gets to Maui with is daughter, Aya, so Denver has to figure everything. His friend owns a restaurant and offers Denver a job and without finding out exactly what the job is, Denver agrees to it since he needs the money.

While staying at a hotel, Denver meets Kai, the pool lifeguard and starts flirting with her. He comes to find out that she is going to be the future sister in law of his friend, who is getting married to Kai's sister Lea. Kai is struggle with the life changes and since she has been a parent to her sister in her early 20s, she doesn't know how to let loose and have fun.

Hilarity ensures when Denver finds out that the restaurant, Man Buns, is like a Hooters but men as waiters wearing tight speedos! It is not his ideal job, but the tips makes the job worthwhile while he looks for another job. Denver and Kai continue to run into each other and each realizes their attraction to each other. They finally give in to their attraction and it is so fun and romantic. Kai finally starts opening up about her past and Denver does the same. These two are perfect for each other and it is great to see them having fun and realizing that what they have is not fleeting.

Another funny and romantic book from Ms. Ryan.

I freakin' LOVE LOVE LOVE the brilliant Shari J. Ryan, because not only is she so talented, but she has a very original way with words that always entertains the hell out of me. Man Buns is another hilarious story with a side of sweet romance that I couldn't get enough of. Kai is a very responsible woman who has been taking care of her younger sister since they were teenagers after her parents were killed. Now, even though she's much older, she's become so uptight, and hasn't even made the time to date. That all changes when single dad, Denver, moves from Oahu to Maui, and starts working at Kai's future brother in law's restaurant, Man Buns (which is the funniest part of all). At first she puts him through the paces, but Denver wants to make her his, and he refuses to back down at getting to know her better. This story not only kept me turning that pages quickly, but kept me laughing my a** off at all the interactions. I mean the cast of secondaries alone kept the humor at hilarious levels throughout, with a tiny human named Aya leading the way to stealing my heart. Now Kai and Denver had some serious chemistry, which finally leads to sexy times that lit the sheets on FIRE, not to mention they were just fun when they were together. There was a big twist to finish out the story, which had my f-bombs dropping because yeah, so rude. Can't tell you more than that, so you'll just have to read it in order to find out what the twist was! I LOVED this story, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

This is a standalone book in The Man Cave series. What a great romantic comedy and a second chance at love for father and daughter. I liked the plot and the writing was good. I loved the humor. It started a bit slow and then it picked up speed. When I saw the title Man Bun. I was not thinking what it was. I was on a different path. This was so much better than my idea. I dod not read the blurb. The title did it for me.

Denver and Aya are packing up and moving on. They need a change and Denver is done with his enlistment.

Kai has been taking care of her little sister since her their parents died when Kai was eighteen and Lea was twelve. She is strong and has done everything she can to provide the best for Lea. In doing so she has let her life pass her by.

Denver is a single father that has been in the military for the last eight years and he is done. He has been a recruiter and now it is his turn to do what he can to make a fresh start on a new island. HIs good friend Noa offers him a job and he takes it without knowing anything about it. Always ask questions Denver.

This was such a sweet story and I love love loved how Kai made Denver work for it. The people are great. Though at times Kai’s sister bore on my last nerve. There were moments that Noa did as well too. There are such sweet times with little miss matchmaker Aya for her dad. It was great. The interaction between them all was good. There were scenes where I full-on belly laughed. Let's just say Denver’s first day was one of them.

Waiting for the next installment.

After listening to Exodus, I needed something light to get rid of my massive book hanger. The first words of the blurb were "Single marine dad, romantic comedy," and I decided this would be my next listen.
They did forget to add the heroine would be a virgin. Fortunately for me, they didn't go in-depth on that aspect. The way the heroine got portrayed, it was believable she was a virgin.

The hero, Denver, is a really nice, kind guy who did everything to give his daughter a good life, even if it means working at the male version of Hooters, aka Man Buns, for a while.
I loved everything about them as a couple, from how they communicated and understood each other to their dry humor.

What I absolutely loved in this book was the hero's daughter having an attitude and not always behaving like an angel. It made the story more realistic because children never behave perfectly, so they shouldn't in a story either.
Man buns was a funny story that's low on drama and sweet as sugar. There was some steam but not a lot and not very descriptive.

Samantha Summers and Adam James Connor narrated the story. Adam James Connor's voice is deep and husky, with a slight southern accent. His emotions were audible in his voice, and he was very consistent in all the character's voices.
Samantha Summers has a beautiful voice that sometimes sounded slightly nasal.
Their voices fitted together, and they did a great job bringing the story to life.

This story is perfect for listening to lying at your hotel pool while you relax and watch the other guests.

Denver is a single dad whose top priority is his daughter Aya. When he gets out of the Marine Corps he isn’t entirely sure what his job will be but his friend has promised something to get him by until he can find employment. On his first night of work he isn’t quite prepared for he job but he can’t deny the nice paycheck. He also meets Kai – a very independent and slightly intimidating woman who is not falling for his flirtations and jokes. However, slowly but surely he climbs over her walls and she can’t help but think he could be more than just a friend.

I have read a few other things from this other and I really enjoy the way she brings the different emotions – you could be sad one minute then laughing the next. So I knew this would be a fun read and I was not disappointed in the amount of laughter caused while reading. The book was a decent length but the timing was steady. You could really dive into the book and feel like you were there with Denver and Kai. They both have ‘baggage’ from their pasts but they come together to overcome any hurdles and it is all realistic. Although there were a few moments in the beginning where it felt like the connection between Denver and Kai was forced, the closer that the characters grew together the more believable their relationship became to me. Overall I’d give it 4 stars and I can’t wait to see what else might come for Denver, Kai and Aya.

** 4 stars - I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader copy of this book.

Sweet story about a single dad, Denver, and a 28 year-old virgin, Kai, set in Hawaii. Denver is a former marine who accepts a job as a waiter in his former comrade’s restaurant artfully named Man Buns. Kai works as a lifeguard at a swanky hotel.

Both are dealing with issues from the past. Denver’s wife divorced him and abandoned their daughter a few years earlier. Kai has never fully recovered from the loss of her parents and the responsibilities that were thrust upon her after their death in a car accident. When readers first meet Kai, she’s closed off and seems to have a stick up her butt. She connects with Denver for some reason (Don’t ask me why. I didn’t get why he was so special to her, but he was.), and the walls around her heart tumble down.

Her decision to have sex with him happened rather quickly. I mean really fast. She was a little too eager to lose her V-card. The ease with which she “performed” was somewhat unrealistic, but . . .

Unlike the previous two books I read in this series, this book is told from the heroine’s and hero’s point of views. “Manservant” and “Man Flu” only portrayed the heroine’s point of view. I’m moving on from this series now. This is the third book I’ve read in this series, and it’s also the third book that mentions the Shermanator, the vibrator that belongs to the heroine in “Manservant.” This is the second book in which a child walked into a parent’s bedroom and found her father naked with a woman. Oy vey!

4.5 Wonder Buns Stars!
I absolutely adored this hilarious and heartfelt single Dad romance! Denver has left the marines to focus on raising his adorable little girl, Aya. An ex marine buddy has offered him a job and a place to live until he finds what he wants. Well neither are what he expected, but they did lead them to a sexy lifeguard. Kai has put her life on hold for ten years to raise her younger sister, since the sudden death of their parents. She doesn't know how to be anything else but responsible and steadfast. Denver brings out a wildness in her that she never knew existed. After a rocky start, Denver, and Kai, with the help of a precocious little Aya, begin to find a love they never dreamed of. I fell so hard for Denver. He was so sweet and attentive with Aya, and the way he brought out the real Kai only made me swoon more. I loved Denver and Kai together, they were kind, funny, and their chemistry was explosive. Their family and friends only added to the fun and quirkiness of this story.
Man Buns had everything I crave in a romantic comedy. It has fascinating and quirky characters, witty banter, hilariously awkward moments, many sweet and heartfelt scenes, is delicious hot and steamy, and all in an exotic location! The ending was so perfect and romantic, it had me in tears. You definitely need some Man Buns!
