I recently purchased the Audioengine A2+ speakers, and I have been thoroughly impressed with their performance. Despite their compact size, these speakers deliver an outstanding sound quality that surpasses many larger and more expensive models. The clarity and depth of the audio are remarkable, making every listening experience enjoyable, whether I'm streaming music, watching movies, or playing video games.
The setup was a breeze, and I appreciate the versatility these speakers offer with multiple audio inputs including USB, which allows for a direct digital connection that bypasses my computer's lower quality sound card. This feature significantly enhances the listening experience with cleaner, more precise sound.
Another highlight is the build quality. The speakers feel solid and well-crafted, and their sleek design adds a touch of elegance to my desk setup. They're not just functional; they're also aesthetically pleasing.
The A2+ speakers also feature built-in amplifiers, which means there's no need for an external amp. This integrated approach not only saves space but also simplifies the audio setup without compromising on sound quality.
In conclusion, the Audioengine A2+ speakers are a fantastic investment for anyone looking to enhance their audio experience without sacrificing space. They offer exceptional sound quality, easy setup, and a sleek design, all at a reasonable price point. Highly recommended for audiophiles and casual listeners alike!
Executive summary:
I upgraded to these AudioEngine A2+ speakers from the $20 speakers I’d been using since I got my desktop PC. These are so much better. These sound as good or better than any speakers I’ve ever owned, even ones that are much more expensive. They are worth every penny. I have zero regrets and would recommend them to anybody. I am not an audio expert and I have not done exhaustive comparisons between these and a lot of other kinds of speakers.
Details:
My $20 speakers were OK but after 6 months of pandemic working-at-home I was definitely ready for a sound improvement. I read a bunch of reviews of different computer speakers. There were a lot of speakers around the $100-150 price point, but I decided to splurge on these at over $250 because the reviews were good and I figured that you get what you pay for. I have no idea whether these are better than any of the ones I didn’t buy.
My first take upon unboxing was that these folks care about what they’re selling. The packaging was extremely well done. Each speaker came in its own individual cloth bag, and the rest of the box was very well put together. Obviously this has nothing to do with the sound quality, but when people pay so much attention to what’s on the outside, chances are pretty good that they care a lot about the insides too.
The physical size of these is perfect for my limited desktop. I had considered getting the larger A5 instead and after seeing these, I’m glad I didn’t, they would have been much too bulky for my particular setup. The wiring setup is very easy. All inputs plug in to the left speaker and the right speaker is just a slave that connects to the right via speaker wire. The left speaker also contains all of the electronics like the Bluetooth, USB DAC, and amplifier. So it tends to run a bit warmer than the right speaker but not overly hot. They give you every cable you’ll need for all the different inputs.
I turned them on and started listening. My music source is Amazon Music HD. They immediately sounded fantastic, but after making this investment I decided to do a bit of research and figure out how to optimize them for the best listening.
First I got equalizer software for my PC. I use the APO equalizer, with the Peace GUI. This is an amazing piece of software for the price ($0), and it lets you customize just about every aspect of your sound. Everybody has different preferences, and ears with different ages, and varying sensitivities at different frequencies, and Peace/APO lets you tweak the equalization so you can get it sounding just right for you. It’s a huge improvement over the flat response that a computer gives you by default, and far more capable than the equalizer that came with my sound card.
Next I tilted the speakers upwards so that they point directly at my head from where they’re sitting on my desk. This made a huge difference in the mid-to-high frequencies. I ended up buying the AudioEngine DS1 speaker stands. They’re custom fitted to the A2+ speakers and even though their angle is not adjustable, it’s perfect for my specific layout. This brings up the point that a PC sound system is usually used by just one person, so you can position the speakers so that your head is in the perfect “sweet spot” of the sound field. Of course that is possible with any PC speakers.
These speakers have a bunch of different inputs, all of which can operate simultaneously. From my desktop PC I connect them to the on-board sound card via the provided 3.5mm cable. From my laptop I connect via a dedicated USB DAC that I bought because otherwise my laptop just wasn’t able to produce anything like the great sound I was getting from my desktop. I knew before I bought them that they had multiple inputs but that turned out to be an unexpectedly nice feature because I can switch seamlessly between audio from both computers, and even hear sound effects from both systems at the same time when I need to. I am only using the analog inputs. I did not try the built-in Bluetooth. I did try the built-in USB DAC, and I was unable to get it to sound as good as either of my other sources.
Overall the sound from these is superb - the highs are crystal clear with zero tinniness and I can’t think about any aspect of the sound that I’m unhappy with. One comment I see in a lot of the A2 reviews is that people think the bass is lacking. It’s true that these don’t thump you out of your seat like a dedicated subwoofer would, or even speakers with bigger drivers. But the bass they deliver is super clear. I can hear every nuance of a jazz bassline, and low drum beats with no problem at all. I personally have no issue with the bass on these, but if that ever changes they also have RCA outputs that can be used to drive a dedicated subwoofer if I feel like adding one some day.
I'm not an audiophile/technophile, so I can't speak the lingo. I can't compare similar "systems" and quote facts and figures. What I am is a classically-trained singer/musician with an excellent "ear." The sound which came out of these little speakers just blew me away. I had really forgotten what most of my music collection sounded like. Words which leap to mind: warm, full-bodied, clear, sparkling, accurate, realistic, layered, beautifully articulated.
My taste ranges from opera to orchestral to jazz to Latin to Big Band to Rock to Bluegrass. Singer/songwriter, Country, pretty much everything (including a growing collection of spoken word from Audible). The better the original recording, of course, the better it sounds. A fine recording sounds fantastic with these speakers, and this is true across the range of genres. I'm not able to comment on hip-hop, rap, techno dance music or any popular styles or games which demand a thunderous bass. My more modest bass demands are more than satisfied with the surprising and excellent bass produced by these two speakers. I can't imagine adding a sub-woofer; it would be far too much for my taste. I would suggest that listening to the speakers alone for a few weeks might be enough to convince many folks that the added expense of a sub-woofer isn't necessary.
I'm not a complete ninny, can follow clearly written instructions, and have a general idea of how things work. I think I could have managed to hook everything up correctly without the User Guide, but when a User Guide has been thoughtfully included, I feel compelled to read the book and improve my chances for first-round success. Even the technically challenged shouldn't have difficulty. The text and illustrations are super clear and very easy. If you can read and follow directions, you'll be connected and listening to your music in a jiffy.
The USB connection directly from the active (left) speaker to your computer is part of the "plus" in this new an improved version of the old A2 (now A2+). It could not be any easier. One of the strongest selling points for me was that I no longer required a stack of "stereo components." Everything you need is in that left-hand active speaker to produce beautiful sounds. I set up the "system" as instructed, connected the speakers to my desktop via the included USB cable, pulled up my computer's music software, chose an album and "Voila!"--the music of my choice as I hadn't heard it in a long, long time. There's no drivers or software to download. My computer recognized the speakers instantly, with no effort on my part. I can also connect the speakers to my iPod Classic, my Visio flat screen, etc. (you'll have to buy your own rca cable, but that's ok, everything else is included.)
The "audioengineusa" website has a wealth of information, lots of thoughtful Q&A, and you can even download the product User Guides to answer as many concerns as possible before you take the leap. These little speakers (and their big brother, the "A5+") have received lots of positive press. A Google search will produce many articles and reviews by experts and "amateurs" alike, and there's a number of youtube videos posted online, too. You know the ones--the guys show you everything from unboxing through setup. There's enough research and feedback out there that you should have no surprises (I didn't.), and feel confident about a purchase decision.
I'm using the A2+s in a fairly small bedroom used as an office/workroom. They sound great when I'm working at my computer and equally impressive when sitting in an easy chair relaxing on the opposite side of the room. The sound coming from the speakers more than fills the room and they would be a nice choice for the bedroom, too.
I chose the white and am very pleased with the clean, unfussy look, softly rounded edges and corners and compact size which is relatively heavy. They "feel" substantial and every detail is perfectly executed. The finish is a super high gloss, shiny, like nail polish. They have a very high-end appearance and come beautifully packaged and protected in silky-lined microfiber bags, like jewels, which they are. I did separately purchase the accessory molded stands ($29) which (I think) angle the sound for optimum performance and complete the "look." I'm not sorry I got them, even though they were a little pricey.
I plan to keep this "system" a long time and didn't want to make do anymore. I may buy the A5+s for the living room--I simply love the absence of clutter.
