The PetSafe PIF00-12917 2-Dog Stay and Play Wireless Dog Fence System is designed for yards up to 3/4 acres in size. This portable system features a water-resistant battery-operated collar receiver to offer secure, reliable containment. Patented run-through prevention and timeout between corrections help your dog learn his limits quickly and safely. The Stay and Play system consists of a Wireless fence transmitter with power adapter. When the dog approaches near the wireless perimeter, a special collar worn around his neck delivers a brief, totally harmless correction that discourages him from crossing the boundary. Corrections typically become less frequent as the dog learns his new limits.

Keeps the Dogs in the Yard

This fence is working great with our two dogs. They both trained very quickly and stay well away from the borders. (We have it on setting 3.) We are not on flat land, but it seems to handle that fairly well, maybe reaching farther on downhill slopes, and not as far for the uphill sloping side. We also have lots trees and do not think they are causing problems. I will say it is not a very perfect circle on our land, and that may be because of the sloping and trees, but it works to keep the dogs on our property and we don't care too much about how perfect the circle is. We have 1.33 acres and have it on maximum settings, it covers enough to give the dogs plenty of room to run, without the borders being near the street.

Good product, but wouldn't work at my rental house due to signal blockage

I moved into a new house without a fenced yard and needed a way to keep my two dogs from wandering (it's a rental, so I can't put up a fence). After multiple attempts to get things working with no luck I contacted the company for tech support. Customer support was responsive, polite, and helpful, but in the end it wasn't possible to create a large enough area for the dogs without a dead zone or encroaching into the neighbors' yards. The problem was likely related to the location of the house electrical meter (right next to the back door) and a few panels of aluminum siding around the screen room which blocked signal to almost half of my yard. If I relocated the unit to avoid that area, my dogs would have been limited to about 1/4 of the back yard to play in. I ended up having to return it and look for another solution. Despite that, initial setup was relatively easy, though I found that the beeping tone of the collar is very difficult to hear (for a human, anyway) and the "test LED" tools provided are klunky to use and very dim (difficult to see during the daytime). In the end, I resorted to just putting my thumb across both contacts in order to feel the correction shock while finding the border of the containment area. I never got far enough with the system to train my dogs to respond to the collars, so I can't comment on that. It seems like a quality product and customer support was good (hence the 4 stars), but be forewarned that metal objects will block the signal and affect where you can install/use the system.

Works Really Well!

I wasn't too optimistic that this would work well, but I was pleasantly surprised. Our yard is not that large, but after moving the base around the house, we were able to find a spot that gives the dogs 45 feet right up to the street and right to the backyard bushes. Listening for the beeps when placing the flags isn't an exact science, but finding most spots correctly and then adding many flags in between to make a clear boundary worked fine. The dogs were shocked twice accidentally when learning due to charging through after rabbits, but with continued walking on a leash towards the white flags where the beeping starts, they quickly learned to stay away. Putting flags in our cement driveway was impossible, so I used a white oil-based pastel crayon and drew a white line. They surprisingly caught on. We have owned the product for a month and a half and charged the necklaces for our two dogs only once so far. Our quality of life has improved tremendously. Now the dogs run in and out when the front door is open and there are no worries of running away.

UPDATE! Don’t buy this! It has started shocking my dog at random. It shocked me when I picked the collar up not 15 feet from the base unit. Amazon please quit selling this product!

This product does not work well if you have a steep incline. The collar unit is easy to charge but the waterproofing plug is difficult to get in place. When I was setting the boundaries I had a difficult time hearing the beep, louder would be helpful. The instructions say to hold it at your dogs height, I have a schnauzer and wasn’t going to walk up and down hill bent over with my hand 8” from the ground. The first time out alone with the collar on my Aussie managed to lose it. Impossible to find, wish it had a neon color so it could be spotted in leafy terrain. A remote control to make it beep would be nice, maybe I could have found it. Since I didn’t have all the pieces I couldn’t return it and spending another $150 for another collar unit wasn’t going to happen. Now my two dog system is a one dog system as it’s too difficult to switch the programming. My older schnauzer did much better training and being on her own than the one year old Aussie did. The Aussie would get excited by something (another dog) outside the boundary and she would momentarily pause when she was shocked then take off outside the boundary. We have a steep drop off on one side of our property and this system doesn’t seem to work there, naturally the Aussie figured this out right away. We have had to reduce the boundary so she can’t get there. One of the reasons I chose this system was because it would cover 3/4 of an acre and because of having to adjust for the steep drop off we are not able to get that much space. On the positive side it is easy to reduce the boundary with the 16 different radius options, changing from short to long prongs on the collar unit is easy and the dogs don’t seem uncomfortable wearing it.

Best Bang for Your Buck!

This fence is performing way better than I expected. I live on 2.5 acres. About 1.5 of it is wooded. I bought an extra transmitter....put one in the front of the house and one in the back to create a larger "figure eight" for the dogs. I assumed that the wooded areas wouldn't work so well, but it does! I'm sure it's not as good of a signal back in there, but the fact that it works at all into the woods is impressive. I would definitely recommend this fence! We have a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon who is set to beep only....he's a senior and well aware of what the fence is all about. We also have a 6 month old Am Staff/American Bulldog/Neo Mastiff mix set to Level 4 and she respects the fence as well. She stopped mid-run the other day when she started chasing one of our chickens. Not sure if she actually got to the boundary or not, but either way, she stopped.
