This is highly recommended for avid cyclists who are not yet into the other serious clip types, are on a budget, and simply want to use their bike for a leisurely ride in between their more serious stuff.
Now on to my review...
I have to start by saying this is one of the best purchases I have had so far for my bike! I have a high end custom road bike (Cannondale CAAD 8 frame, campagnolo record components front to back, the whole thing weighs a total of 16.4 lbs). These pedals were the perfect addition to my bike. I love the fact that I can either compete in triathlons while clipping in and wearing my cycling shoes for the bike portion or wear street shoes and take my bike out with my family on a nice Sunday afternoon. These pedals are so versatile that I believe anyone wanting to get into cycling should start with a pair of these.
They arent the lightest pedals on the market but the versatility, in my opinion, far out weigh the the little bit of extra weight. The way I see it, if I can stand to lose 15-20 lbs then what is an extra 100-200 grams. The pedals are very easy to install and only takes a total of 5 minutes start to finish. The only tools that you need are an Allen wrench and a regular crescent wrench.
The clip side of the pedals are very easy to clip in and out of once you get the hang of it. The pedals accept the spd style cleats (which are supplied with these pedals). The pedals are adjustable in the amount of tension that you can add to the clips. As I said before they are very adjustable and very versatile. These pedals are a good addition to either a mountain bike or road bikes. I'm going to get a new mountain bike soon and I will probably get another set for it as well.
I have been using these pedals for about 2 months now and I have never regretted buying them. I go on both short and long rides (anywhere from 5-50 miles depending on whether I'm going out with my family or training for a triathlon). These pedals have never let me down and if anything were to ever happen to these I would definitely buy another pair!
If anyone has any questions or comments please comment and I will do my best to reply!
The down side of this pedal is the platform side. On standard platform pedals or MTB pedals with the set screws a pair of soccer sneaks or flat bottom shoes works well. Not on this pedal. It is slippery, running sneakers have the best grip. If Shimano could add the set screw grip or some better teeth to the pedal this would be perfect. There is the other option I think the 324 dual function pedal but I like this because it has a wider foot bed like a Mountain bike pedal. However for a 5 mile ride there really isn't much to complain about. If the knew the pedals were solid aluminum, I would have my friends in a machine shop drill holes and thread my own set screws in.
I do feel some clicking on one pedal on the down stroke I am not sure if this is the same spindle problem I have read about with this pedal, it could be the cleat locating inside the pedal, I have the tension loose because I use these in china and when riding its a combo city/country and I want to get out easily because the stereotype about Chinese drivers is more true.
This being said, I am probably giving my Time pedals to my brother and getting another pair of these for my NYC bike. Its a great city pedal and gives you options.
