QUICK OVERVIEW
----------------------------------
I originally bought the 500GB Xbox One w/ Kinect back in Summer 2014. When the Elite Console came out, I was like MEH, what an overpriced bundle with no real significant difference (maybe besides the controller). Well, I was WRONG...
I come from an IT background, so I know the difference between a HDD, SSHD, and SSD. SSD being superior to the three and I HONESTLY didn't think that an SSHD aka Hybrid Drive would make that big of a difference, but it does, oh it does!
----------------------------------
CONTROLLER
----------------------------------
First off, the controller is amazing, yes it is slightly heavier but it's not cumbersome or uncomfortable to hold, not even for extended periods of time. The controller feels great in-hand; very grippy finish throughout, with loads of customization options. The controller greatly improves on the standard Xbox One Controller in every way.
The lockable triggers is amazing whether playing casually or competitively, I keep them locked 24/7. The amount of customization into the controller is actually so much, that is is overwhelming but very much needed so it is a positive regardless. Controller comes with an awesome case to travel with and swappable D-Pad and Joysticks.
Other improvements on the Elite Controller include a standard 3.5mm headphone jack at the base rather than the irritating proprietary port on the regular controller. Next to that is a legacy connection for purpose built headsets.
You’ll also find that the Xbox One Elite Controller has some rather lovely shoulder buttons. Gone are the overly-loud clicky bumpers of the original controller, with the Elite instead offering a quieter, more even response wherever you press them
Amazing controller, PERIOD!
Is the controller worth $150 by itself? Some would say yes, some would say no. Personally I think it is expensive and think ~$100 is a great price if you can snag the controller for that price, I would say jump on it.
----------------------------------
CONSOLE
----------------------------------
The console looks nearly identical, minus the fact that the top-left of the console is not glossy but matte finish rather (which I prefer). I wish the entire console were in a matte finish actually.
Microsoft is using a 1TB hybrid drive AKA SSHD in the Xbox One Elite console vs the older typical Western Digital Blue 500GB 5400RPM standard Hard Drive. I really didn't think the SSHD would make that big of a difference, so I really only wanted the Elite Console for the controller and 1TB internal storage. I was extremely surprised how much faster the Xbox One Elite Console is with that SSHD drive. It loads everything faster than my Xbox with the 500GB HDD. I notice this difference upon bootups and playing MGSV.
Keep in mind, while the new 1TB SSHD is faster, the only advertised benefit is a boot-up time that can be up to 20% faster which, in practical terms, is only a couple of seconds. An external 7200RPM drive will be faster and I would recommend going that route before upgrading to the Elite Console just for the SSHD.
----------------------------------
CONCLUSION
----------------------------------
Do I think the Elite Bundle is worth the extra money? Yes, I do. Easily. The controller in combination with the new 1TB SSHD internal storage is worth the cost to me.
I sold my Xbox One 500GB w/ Kinect to a family member for $300 and paid the difference for the Elite Bundle and it was well worth it to me.
The console: xbox one is great, since all the updates and the upgraded dashboard, for me it's was easier to navigate. The snap system functions way easier and is much simpler to use. Starting a party chat, seeing what your friends are playing, settings, etc. This system has come along way since it was released.
1tb solid state hybrid drive: my 500gb console was out of storage, so the upgrade was needed. The system itself runs way smoother and way faster. I'm signed in, on the dashboard and ready to play a game in just a few seconds. There is no lag, stalls or anything of the sort when snapping apps or navigating.
The elite controller: the controller is great. Its very comfortable. Buttons are super sensitive, very responsive. Trigger stops work great, I use RT for shooting and it's like I said super responsive. The d pad button is awesome. I've never owned a scuff before, first time using paddles, so I am still not use to using them, but with time I will. I love how you can map the controller to whatever setup you want to use. When I go to buy a back up controller, I will be purchasing the elite controller.
If you are considering buying the Xbox one elite console, buy it. I would buy it again, no complaints.
If you're considering buying a 500gb console, I recommend purchasing a external hard drive down the road as well. Don't let the negative reviews drive you away, this is a very good console.
Top reviews from other countries
I'm not noticing anything 'faster' about it, just more space. You could save money and get a 1 TB external hard drive.
I mainly bought this for the Elite Controller, because the Elite Controller was on backorder everywhere else.
First impression of the controller when I took it out of the box was DAMN that is beautiful. It is very impressive and feels like a solid, well engineered piece of technology. It comes in it's own carrying case that fits the controller WITH the chatted attached (sold separately), and the headset. The carrying case is also the storage case for the magnetic paddles, thumbtacks and dpads.
Pros
Helps with my 'playstation thumb.' When I upgraded to an iPhone 6+ and started playing Destiny, I developed De Quervain's Tenosynovitis. Constantly double tapping A to jump, pressing Y to switch weapons, holding B to slide and x to reload with my right thumb made me develop a type of tendonitis in my thumb at age 32. Remapping just the jump & crouch buttons to the bottom paddles has done wonders for my thumb.
Customizable buttons. I'm actually swapping the dpad and using different sized thumbsticks for different games. The longer the stick, the more control you have over your movement' if you want to have maximum control, use a long thumbstick (sniper aiming) but if you just need to move around without much sensitivity control, you can use a short stick. I'm still figuring this out though.
Con
Paddles are very sensitive. I'm finding that I'm accidentally pressing the paddles a lot, and since most of the time you'll have the paddles mapped to A or B, you are accidentally confirming or cancelling things a lot.
Very heavy. Actually the Elite Controller is like 30% heavier than the standard controller. I'm not sure, maybe it's because of the super high quality construction materials, but I'm getting fatigued quicker during marathon gaming sessions. My wrists start to hurt so that I have to rest the controller on my lap. Probably a sign that I should take a break hehe.
Headset not compatible with chatpad. Microsoft didn't really think through the design of the headset port on the elite controller. It comes with a limited edition xbox live headset with a platinum motif, but it's got that wonky incompatible plug that doesn't work with anything else, including the xbox one chatpad which only accepts a standard 3.5mm TRRS jack.
Overall thoughts.
I'm happy with this purchase, I just wish the controller wasn't so heavy, and the paddles were less sensitive, you definitely can't just throw your elite controller on the couch' heck you can't even place it down fast, you have to consciously choose the right surface and gently guide it down like, an Elite Dangerous ship, so the paddles don't depress and delete your save.

Xbox console itself has a matte finish on the upper left portion instead of the glossy finish like the original X1. 1 TB SSHD (which helps in loading times) is basically the only difference internally as the console is the same size as prior models. For some reason Microsoft still has a large exterior power supply on the X1 which I can't understand when Sony can fit theirs into a tiny PS4.
The Xbox One Elite Controller is a marvel to behold. An almost velvety finish on the top with rubbered grips makes this feel great in your hands. Stainless steel analog sticks, D-pads and paddles make it feel like a genuine quality product. Hair trigger switches, magnetic switchable analog sticks/D-pads and programable/removable paddles on the underside add an even greater deal of customization. Also comes with a hard shell carry case with storage for all the customizable pieces so you don't loose them while not in use.
Packaging on the Xbox One Elite Edition is what I described as, "commercialism at it's finest." Superb packaging by amazon (as usual) and arrived on the release day as promised.
Only thing I was disappointed in was from Microsoft's end in that there was no charge and play kit included with the controller. As much more as the bundle/controller costs you think they could throw one in for free.
As for the elite console itself, it runs and loads so much faster than my day one 500gb xbox one. The controller is absolutely sick, way better than any scuff controller I've used.
I didn't really expect the controller to improve my already stellar gaming, but it has. The underside controls are very comfortable to use and now reloading, crouching, switching weapons and jumping have saved my life many times already and this is only my second day using it.
If you already have an Xbox one, don't hesitate to upgrade. You won't be disappointed.
I definitely recommend this console and controller to anyone in the market.
I use this Xbox for everything:
- YouTube
- Netflix
- online gaming
- social media
- watching TV
It is very fast and has provided me with hours of entertainment, definitely the best bang for your buck!
