"We could bore ourselves to death, drink ourselves to death, or have a bit of an adventure..." It was absurd. It was foolhardy. And it was glorious. When they retired, Terry Darlington and his somewhat saner wife Monica—together with their dog, a whippet named Jim—chucked their earthbound life and set out in an utterly unseaworthy sixty-foot canal narrowboat across the notoriously treacherous English Channel and down to the South of France.

Aboard the
Phyllis May, you’ll dive through six-foot waves in the Channel and be swept down the terrible Rhône. You’ll meet the French nobody meets—poets, captains, scholars, madmen; they all want to know the couple on the painted boat and their narrow dog. You’ll visit the France nobody knows—the backwaters of Flanders, the canals beneath Paris, and the forbidden routes to the wine-dark Mediterranean Sea. Aliens, trolls, gongoozlers, killer fish, and the walking dead all stand between our two-person, one-whippet crew and their goal: the ancient, many-towered city of Carcassonne.

A tale of travel, travail, dubious wine, a balky pump, and a boat built for only a few feet of water, this exuberantly inventive and hugely entertaining odyssey of the spirit, senses, and heart will enchant lovers of France, England, and all that lies between.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As husband-and-wife pensioners, Brits Terry and Monica Darlington sail their barge down the English canal system, along the Thames, past London, to Paris on the Seine and down the Rhône to Carcassonne, France. Along the way, they introduce the folks who make their homes on the water. They avoid teenage vandals, fail to teach their beloved whippet, Jim, to hunt rabbits and sail across the English Channel after nearly every informed acquaintance advises otherwise. The mixture of British vernacular and boating terms in this book originally published in England will leave some readers adrift. Yet the style echoes the author's clear zest for living in the moment. Frequent flashes of wit and poetic prose capture poignant emotions. The addendum of French phrases entitled French in Fifteen Minutes nicely sums up differences in the French and British cultures and makes clear the author's own mistakes while navigating a foreign language and culture. From Booklist

When they retired, Terry Darlington and his wife, Monica, decided to take a trip. The Welsh couple, along with their dog, a whippet called Jim, set out in a 60-foot narrow boat across the English Channel and down the Rhone River to the south of France. In this memoir of “travel travail, and dubious wine,” they describe the places they saw and the people they met. In a brief final chapter, they insist that the only way to learn to speak French “is to go somewhere where you have to speak the language or starve and do without sex.” This is followed by 18 phrases and a suggestion that at times of high excitement your action should be similar to a man standing beneath a tree catching plums. The book, which includes color maps and illustrations, no doubt is one of the most hilarious travel memoirs ever written. --George Cohen

The Darlingtons and their narrow dog Jim cross the English Channel in the Phyllis May to cruise the canals and rivers of France.
We have gifted this wonderful book to friends more than twenty times. And for a bonus, Terry and Monica are now friends. Until we met them and read their book "Narrow Dog To Indian River", we knew of no one else who had cruised both the Intracoastal Waterway AND the English canals. We have lived aboard our 40' Island Packet VOYAGEUR for eight years, traveling up and down the US east coast and over to the Bahamas When we need a vacation, we visit the UK for three or four weeks of 'narrowboating".

A friend suggested this book as an amusing read to lift my spirits after a hospitalization, and I owe her a big favor in return!. I am a fast reader, but I purposely rationed my reading to make this experience last. Terry Darlington has a unique style, a wide-ranging intelligence, and an incredible dry sense of humor. His references to places, people, poetry, art and movies and music sent me to look up things multiple times. His love for his wife and for Jim, the Whippet narrow dog of the title, come through on every page; as does everyone's need to sometimes go off alone or become surly (dogs and people) when confined to tight quarters for long periods. My enjoyment for this book is confirmed by the fact that I had ordered its sequel, Narrow Dog To Indian River, before I'd even finished this book.

Enjoyed the book but not as much as I liked the book where this couple took their boat through the Deep South of the United States. Nothing wrong with the story but since I KNOW the USA, and can picture the places they went, it was just more relatable.

I sooooo wanted to like this book because of the subject matter, but have been very disappointed. The manner of writing is a bit hard to follow at times as the author switches perspective quite often. Also, I don't really feel like I know Monica and Terry, nor do I understand any of their motivations. In fact, I feel like I know their whippet Jim better than the 2 of them. Even the smallest things are annoying, like why is Monica the one who is in charge of opening all of the locks? What is life like on the boat? All I get are the authors inscrutable musings and impressions. I've got Narrow Dog to Indian River on my reading list but will likely forego reading it.

Wonderful, enchanting, funny - with bonus Whippet (I have one) and boats. A different style but takes only a few pages to get well into and feel as if one is onboard. Crazy Brits (from Wales) are the best!

A literary chuckle on every page! Terry Darlington has many literary allusions for those of you who would like to test your literary mettle; for those of you who simply love the delicate touch of a fine sentence there are many of those; for dog lovers there is a gentle fondness for his 'narrow dog' and for those of you who admire a simple act of bravery such a crossing the English Channel - a feat not done very often before - there is a spell-binding sense of adventure...

all in all a great read.

I laughed out loud many times while reading this book, especially at Jim the whippet (who is very like one of my own whippets). The lack of quotation marks was a bit annoying at first, but once I got used to that, I didn't want to put this book down. Terry Darlington has a wonderfully dry sense of humor and a no-nonsense way of looking at the world around him. It didn't make me want to jump on a narrowboat with my whippet any time soon, but did want me to buy the next book and find out what they got up to in Indian River.

As others have said, the author's writing style is contrived and tedious. Obviously it appeals to some (withness the good reviews), but not to me.

I wanted to enjoy the book, but just couldn't get into it at all. Too bad, because I'm sure there was a good story waiting to be told: crossing the Channel via narrowboat, fancy!

Enjoyed the book. The writing was entertaining but sometimes confusing. It could be hard to tell if the story or anecdote was real or fantasy.
I am interested in doing a similar thing so was very interested

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story
Reviewed in France on May 22, 2016
It's a very interesting story and taking a barge across the Channel must be quite challenging. I found that the level of detail in the book discouraged me from finishing it but that is a matter of personal taste. Suggest that you borrow it or read an extract.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, extremely funny, colourful and..I felt like I was there!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 26, 2012
I bought this book 2 years ago and found it difficult to read, as there were too few commas. Picked it up again last week and, reading it at a slower pace, am totally absorbed in it. I find Terry's descriptions of the scenes he encounters, the dry humour he sees in the world around him, including the dog, fantastic reading. I re read many paragraphs as they make me laugh out loud, and some make me cry laughing. I feel I am travelling with them all, the humorous comments are so clever, yet so simple, just a couple of words sometimes. I needed a tonic and I got one with this book and I'm only half way through. Keep travelling Terry, Monica and Jim.

Big John
4.0 out of 5 stars Deightfully original ..preposterous notion!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 15, 2008
Delightfully original, the reality hits home hard. All the time. The humour is there in bucket loads, but I think you have to be English to understand it and even then there is no certainty that you will. For those of American origin this book might prove as hard work as "only fools and horses". But the story is of an adventure, and one that is very real. It starts with the preposterous notion of sailing a 17 ton steel coffin, only ever intended to sail on gentle canals and rivers, across one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Funnily enough the English Channel can get rough, with waves big enough to sink a narrow boat very quickly. The story would have stopped there and then if it had sunk.... From there you enter the world of waterborne Europe. France in particular. It is a lovely story, and very amusing. I am glad I read it, and am looking forward to reading its sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Boaters, buy this. Buy this now!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 8, 2015
This won't make any sense whatsoever unless you're a narrowboater. don't even try. You just won't get it. If you ARE a narrow boater, or know someone who is, buy it immediately and then buy the 2 sequels. Darlington is a masterful author. His style is slightly surreal, almost stream of consciousness in places. The stories tell of heroism, extreme cowardice, failing limbs and failing engines, slow locks and fast dogs, mental blocks and language barriers. Above all the book is beautiful, captivating and beer splutteringly funny. I'm afraid the man might be a national treasure.
