Customers are mixed about the performance of the wearable computer. Some mention that the trunks on, and while this works pretty well, the turbulence of the water, they still like the functionality of the watch, the heart rate monitor works well, and the watch offers a way to record indoor training, does a decent job on running, treadmill, walking and biking, and that the GPS works well and as long as you're outside it finds the signal. Others say that the heart Rate is absolutely terrible, lags constantly, and it failed because they jumped in a swimming. As with all wrist based, it's not perfect, and is not 100% reliable. Music controls don't work for Spotify.
"...I still like the functionality of the watch, so on that score I will leave it with 4 stars. Great GPS sync. Excellent accuracy when running...." Read more

Customers are mixed about the tracking of the wearable computer. Some mention that it really desired health and fitness tracking, information easily uploaded to a computer. However, others say that it does not track heart rate while swimming, the tracking started going nuts, and the heart rate sensor is not as good as the Scosche RHYTHM plus Heart.

Customers are mixed about the ease of use of the wearable computer. Some mention that the built-in GPS, and an easy to use watch and app work together. The usability of the supporting apps on Android and IOS is amazing. However, some say that the interface is much less intuitive than the FitBit's, and the device is a bit complex with apps and widgets. The first impression is that the device can be a little complicated and cumbersome, so plan to spend some time with the 30 page manual.

Customers are mixed about the accuracy of the wearable computer. Some mention that the GPS is accurate, the heartrate monitoring is sufficiently accurate, and the laps and yards swam are accurate. The statistics are mostly accurate, but some say that the out of the box it is not very accurate and the flights of stairs climbed is not accurate.
"...Connects to GPS in 2 or 3 seconds. The GPS-generated map is the most accurate of any of the devices I've used (Apple Watch and Microsoft Band)...." Read more
"...HR monitor is generally accurate. As good as I think you are likely to get without a chest band...." Read more

Customers are mixed about the connectivity of the wearable computer. Some mention that it syncs well with their phone and the additional MyFitnessPal app, while others say that sometimes the sync will not go through and they have to sync manually. The connectivity seems strong, and it quickly pairs with their phones. However, some customers say that the GPS takes a while to synch and maintaining connection is iffy.

1. Swim tracking: A lot of people ask about this. Yes, it's water resistant and that's good enough for normal swimming not diving. That was the main reason why I bought it in the first place. I do lap swims regularly, and wanted something to 1) count my laps, because I ALWAYS lose count after about 7 or 8 laps. You lap swimmers out there can probably relate. Besides counting laps, it counts strokes by accelerometer, length time, and SWOLF score. Let me just put this out there first: it's not perfect. It has shown to 1) under-count my lengths sometimes if I pause it right at the end of a length; 2) over-count sometimes if I don't pause it AND sit at the end of the length for too long. But, it all tend to even out in the end. It's definitely got room for improvement as far as its sensing capability. But it's still better than me losing count in my head, and at least this way I have some good approximation of how many laps I've done. I WISH Garmin would let the swim app track heart rates during a swim. I understand the accuracy issue due to muscle flexing, but at least let it be an option with the understanding that it may or may not be 100% accurate. Interestingly, one time I purposely started my session without running the swim app, the watch's move-IQ was able to detect the activity being a swim, AND it recorded my heart rates for the whole session. It didn't record my laps or strokes. The heart rates were "reasonable" for what it is. I got nothing to compare it against other than the feel of my own pulse, but I think their inaccuracy claim is overblown. They should really let people decide to track heart rates for swimming. So, as it is right now, it's either tracking your laps, strokes and time but no heart rates, or the opposite. A little disappointing but not a deal breaker. Like I said, it's good enough. Tips: use the left button for pause when trying to catch a breather; use the right button to stop the session. The touch screen would not work properly when wet, but will once dried (finger must be dried too).
2. General activity tracking: to me, these come as a bonus. And they are great. I can track my walks, elliptical sessions, bicycling, etc. The step sensor is GREAT. It's far better than any other that I've seen. It tracks my steps pretty accurately, even under the following conditions: 1) in bumpy vehicles (no false positives), 2) with my watch hand holding on stuff (does not depend on my arm swinging), 3) GPS or no GPS signal. The stairs detection is hit and miss. I would say that it tracks my going down better than my going up, but for the most part, it's good enough. It probably misses 1 or 2 floors going up per day (I go up about 10 to 15 floors on an average day). Bicycling it's fine, but I'm not a serious cyclist. For those who are more serious about cycling, you should get the extra sensors for your bike. It detects my bike speed using GPS well enough as far as I know.
3. Heart rate tracking: I track my heart rate 24/7 with this device. It gives you good insight to your activity levels, resting heart rates, and helps with sleep detection and tracking (I'll elaborate on this in the next section). On dry land, comparing it with my other heart rate sensors, this watch's optical HR sensor seems to be excellent. I'd say it's well within plus or minus 2 bpm. Why you'd need anything more accurate than that, unless in a medical necessity, is beyond me. The great thing is, it's always there. My only wish is for Garmin to let me track HR during a swim (see above).
4. Sleep tracking: You tell it about your normal sleep hours, and it tries to keep track how many hours of deep or light sleep you get during, based on your movement or heart rate (?). Now, I've recently connected it to the Android Sleep app, and it offers more functions. I haven't dug deep into that, yet, but it looks pretty promising. But simply being able to set near silent vibrating alarms without waking up everybody in the house is very beneficial.
5. Other "smart watch" functions: It's important to keep in mind that this is NOT intended to be a smart watch with activity tracking, but an activity tracker with some smart watch features. It has rudimentary smart watch functions like getting notifications for your incoming calls, emails, text, calendar events etc. You can't take a call with it. You can't do anything to the messages other than reading the cut-off version. But, I find myself looking at my phone far less than before (besides the checking the time part), because now at a quick glance I can decide whether I really need to whip out my phone to begin with. It's not as distracting as a phone. Bottom line about this is, set your expectation accordingly. It's not a fruit watch, but its limited smart phone functionality is just good enough as a supplement to my phone.
6. Other observations and tips. 1) About the screen's brightness and readability. A lot of people seem to be concerned about this. Under bright conditions, especially under sunlight, this device is SUPER readable. The brighter the better. So don't worry about that. It's under darker conditions that you might have a problem seeing it. My tip is to change the screen's background color to white instead of the default black. On an LCD, this should even provide slight battery saving as well. It's more readable with black letters on white background. They should've made this the default setting. With this, I even turn down my backlight brightness from default 3 to 2, and the timeout from 10 sec to 5. 2) Battery life. It's good. While I've never let it drop below 20% before recharging, my estimate is that even with constant HR monitoring, Bluetooth and sleep tracking, I can easily go 5 days on a single charge. It depends on how many activity apps you run, of course. The other factor being how many vibrating alerts I get during the day for stuff like incoming (and outgoing) emails. I wish they tweak the notifications to not vibrate on outgoing emails. The vibration uses a lot of battery I'd imagine. On a busy work day, the watch's battery can probably last for more than 3 days on a single charge.
In all, even with the minor issues I mentioned above, I love this little device. Unless you are seriously picky about every activity tracking or you need a full-featured smart watch, this would be a great device to have.
Durability: 5/5 I am a mechanic and I wear this watch 95% of the time at work. I put a screen protector on it day one, the protector has some decent scratches but nothing has transferred to the watch. I have slammed it and crushed it (accidentally) and to this point nothing has phased it.
Comfort: 4/5 I haven't worn anything on my wrists since I was in high school and was pretty apprehensive about getting a watch to wear 24/7. The first few weeks I developed a number of ingrown hairs under wear the watch rides, I switched to my other wrist at night to allow those to go away and as of month 2 I no longer had any discomfort. The band does pull my wrist hair at times which is irretating. But overall the texture and quality of the band is very nice, and easily replaceable if you choose.
HR Monitor: 4/5 This one is hard to rate due to your own expectations. I originally started looking into trackers after reading an article on HR training. As this is my first tracker I don't have any comparisons to offer, but I can say through the variety of exercises I participate in it maintains an accuracy of at least 90% with some slight lag. For anyone not getting sponsored to train I can't imagine needing higher accuracy than that, and from what I've read this device is about as good as it gets with a wrist worn HR tracker. I've also noticed at times confusion due to perceived HR bumps vs blood pressure spikes, which are different. This device does not track blood pressure (duh), so don't think your device is crazy off after lifting a heavy set and only seeing a HR of 100! I am still planning on getting a chest strap at some point for more precise tracking, but don't feel any urgency to do so at this point.
Sleep Tracking: 5/5 While I didn't initially plan on sleeping with this on, I tried it out of curiosity, and now I never take it off. It tracks when you go to sleep and wake up relatively well. However, I have to go in occasionally and change when I went to bed cause I was watching a movie before bed and it mistook me for sleeping... 13 hours of sleep last night? I don't think so!
Smart Watch: 3/5 I'm not sure what most people expect from a smart watch, I didn't purchase this device for that purpose so I would only consider myself a casual user of these features. Suffice it to say I find it more of a hassle to ingest the abbreviated information provided on the screen and just go to my phone if I get any notifications. The open software however is sweet, anyone can go and design different apps and widgets, watch faces or activity tracker interfaces. I'm boring though, so I just keep coming back to my favorite one. It is nice to look at my wrist for the time, steps, or to see if I have a text, it makes me feel a little more disconnected from my phone (which is a good thing).
Garmin App: 2/5 OK, so the app probably isn't as bad as I perceive it and there are so many tools and data available! It's just so BIG, I don't have the patience to figure out how to get it to do what I want. I mean I'm a picky person and want it set up exactly the way I want, the options are there, I just don't know how to! So, due to its unusability by me, a self-proclaimed lazy person, I don't like it.
Activity Tracking: 5/5 This Garmin totally surprised me. I don't know who goes and tracks a stand up paddle boarding session, but there's an app for that! Seriously, just about anything you can think of and a bunch you never would have. I exercise 3-6 times a week, running, weights, cycling, and MMA, this thing keeps up with all of it and doesn't even flinch! I never anticipated the versatility of a wrist tracker but more than any other competition or diet or planning the VivoActive has driven me to compete harder with myself than ever before, and I've seen excellent gains since putting it on. I wear this under my boxing gloves 2 hours a week, I don't even notice it's there, it stays in place, and doesn't care what I throw at it, literally!
Integration: 5/5 Honestly, this is what finally made me land on the Garmin. I use Strava for my social exercising and Garmin interfaces flawlessly. When I start an activity on the VivoActive it syncs with Strava and automatically sends a text to my emergency contacts who can watch via LiveTrack. Great feature! After my event it automatically uploads the data seemlessly.
Battery Life: 5/5 As I said before, I usually put in 3-6 hours of exercise tracking a week, and haven't gone fewer than 6 days on a charge, and usually it's 7-8; that's 8 days people! That's like old school Nokia battery life! I never worry about the battery, and it fully charges from dead in less than 2 hours. Plus, I've now had 2 runs I started with 5% battery life, and it waited until I completed my run, then died. Could just be coincidence, but I think they have it programmed to hold out as long as possible, then shut off to save the activity in the memory after, cause when I plug it in and it syncs it's there!
My summary: 4.7/5
I find the watch is comfortable and rarely gets in my way. The things I bought it for, activity Tracking and heart rate monitoring are much more than I expected. I don't care about the smart watch features but the small data I use is convenient. The App...grrrr. And bonus: the battery life!
