FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS Full-frame E-mount Macro Lens
The full-frame 90mm medium telephoto macro E-mount lens features built in image stabilization for sharp, clear images at up to 1:1 magnification, even when shooting handheld. Advanced optics and coatings with a 9-blade circular aperture deliver exceptionally smooth bokeh that G Lenses are renowned for. Sharp in-focus rendering is achieved with a floating focus mechanism that suppresses aberration equally at all focusing distances, whether the subject is far away or extremely close. Other advanced technologies, such as the Nano AR Coating and Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass, elevate overall performance to an extremely high standard.

Nano AR CoatingEffectively suppress reflections that can cause flare and ghosting with Sony’s original Nano AR Coating technology. This precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than lenses with coatings that use an irregular nano-structure. The reflection suppression characteristic of the Nano AR Coating is superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality. |
Circular ApertureWhen changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result. |
Aspherical lens elementsAspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight. |

Internal focusingOnly the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter. |
Lens-based optical image stabilizationGyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills. |
Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) for quiet, precise focusingQuiet, precise DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focus drive - employs piezoelectric elements oscillating at ultrasonic frequencies to drive the focus lens groups. In this case two floating focus groups are driven by independent DDSSM systems for precision positioning of the relatively heavy lenses required for macro photography. The DDSSM drive system is remarkably quiet, making it ideal for animal and insect photography, as well as for movies. It also improves the precision of “focus wobble” employed to achieve optimum focus when shooting movies. |

Focus hold buttonOnce you’ve adjusted focus to where you want it, pressing this button on the lens barrel will keep the lens locked to that focusing distance. The preview function can also be assigned to this button through the camera’s custom settings. |
Focus range limiterThis function allows you to set a limit on the focusing range which can save you time during AF operation as the lens will not ‘hunt’ through the entire focusing range. In macro lenses, this limit can be on either the near or far range (as pictured). In the SEL90M28G, the limit is set on far ranges only. |
Sliding Focus RingThe focus ring slides back and forth to select manual or auto focus which together with a focus hold button, inner focus, and a focus range limiter provide optimum control for macro photography making it easier to shoot insects and other subjects that cannot be approached too closely. Minimal focus breathing and quiet operation are also advantageous for shooting movies. |

Overall, if you need a razor sharp macro and portrait lens, this is the lens you're looking for!
Bought this same lens from camera store, dont trust the transport anymore. Worked flawlessly. Picture quality is amazing. Bokeh is very nice and easily achieved.
Ring light is necessary if you want to shoot bugs or tiny things unless it's very bright.
Still bit scared about the build quality. I've had other sony lenses and never had problems.
DMF focus mode (in camera) helps if autofocus is too iffy. I feel that or manual focus is needed for bug shots. Autofocus will suffice for anything bigger or farther away.
Original:
Just received this sweet macro lens. Hook it ip to 7RM3.
Camera display shows "flicker". F number shows --. There's no auto focus. Turning off auto stability. Testing with different focus limits. Nope. Nothing. Happens. Lens doesn't make a sound either. Switch to manual. Also defective. Doesn't focus at all.
Oh bummer, like so many 1* reviews here, I've gotten a dud.
It was shipped in a original box, looks unopened. Box wrapped in a plastic bag. No extra insulation, bubble wrap. Nothing.
Not a conciving way of shipping expensive lenses.
Returning as defective and trying another one. Was really hoping getting some bug shots.

My wife and i have a few sony ff bodies, and though merely hobbyists, we are both really impressed with the lens’s sharpness and bokeh.
The lens caps in this bundle are also very nice. And the flash is a nice addition. In fact, i would never have considered even getting the flash if not for this bundle. My wife is learning how to get good images using flash so there is a lot of fun learning for her to do, I would have happily paid more if there was a very good tripod in this bundle, or better yet, i would have preferred it was a little less and not gotten a tripod at all.
All in all, this bundle is well worth it in my hobbyist opinion.
The lens is INSANELY sharp. The details preserved are incredible. I've done 2:1 crops, and still been left with usable images.
The bokeh is very pleasing. At close distances, even at f16, you get nicely blurred backgrounds, which just melts away.
The colors pop. I'm pretty sure some Minolta magic was added to this lens, because the colors are very like some great Minoltas.
Build quality is excellent. It feels very good in the hand, and the push-pull AF-MF changer is the best there ever can be. It is incredibly intuitive, and VERY useful for macro work. The focus hold and OSS ON/OFF switches are great too, and truly make this lens very user friendly. The ribbed focus ring is a pleasure to use, and is damped differently in AF or MF modes. MF mode has hard stops at CFD and infinity. It is technically focus by wire, not mechanically coupled, but it doesn't feel that way. I usually set my camera to DMF for macro work, then adjust focus by shifting between AF and MF seamlessly.
Focus tends to be accurate, but speed is all over the place. With a good subject-background separation, there's no issues at all. But without that, there's a lot of hunting, especially at the macro range. Perversely, the focus limiter adds to this. You can limit focus so the lens only hunts in the macro range, but this slows down focus a lot. I've had quicker macro focus acquisition by setting the range to full.
Yes, I know macro lenses don't have great AF anyway. But the fact that the focus limiter hurts, rather than helps, is troubling.
There's a reasonable amount of focus breathing when doing macro work. I've grown to be able to predict it, and it doesn't bother me too much.
All said, if you have an E-mount body and need to do macro work, you can't go wrong here, and not only because this is the only legitimate option.

WHAT A BEAST!!!! Beautiful crisp clear scenery shots, amazing low light focal capability and it's an easy to use/figure out lens all around.
I heard many people complaining about the auto focus noise, but I have not experienced it myself. I find it to be quite silent personally. It is however finicky at times and I found myself using manual focus more often than not.
The lens itself has got kind of a fixed distance zoom (if that makes any sense), so be aware of that. Example: The picture of my motorcycle, to get it all in frame was taken from about 30' away at night is very poor almost black lighting.
Note that when your shooting close up, the slightest twist on manual focus is the distance between miles in comparison (see pic of dog). Its a touchy lense but I feel its well worth the lessons it teaches you. A delicate touch will make all the difference.
My advice: Buy this lens & thank me later..... DO IT!

Regarding ergonomic, the AutoFocus/ManualFocus transition on the lens is not the best design, IMO. Instead of a physical button on the side of the lens, one changes from Auto to Manual (and vice versa) by pushing or pulling the focus ring of the lens. Not the best idea, according to me.
I have the lens for a month now and have not had a chance to try the macro feature yet, but when I'll do, I will update my review.
Despite the small drawback of the focus ring, I am fully satisfied with the Sony 90mm lens and would buy it again.
