I haven't bought a nfs game since SHIFT (which wasn't too great). The series has been confused ever since. I never liked the several different formats of Shift and Rivals due to the lack of an open world.
They finally went back to the format that works and is so much fun. This game reminds me of the original Most Wanted game on the ps2 with the cut scenes and phone calls from characters in the game. They might be cheesy but they work.
All you need to really enjoy this game is a little bit of effort. The handling is beautifully done once you do some fine tuning - which is extremely rewarding once you find the right setup. The graphics are spectacular in and outside the garage. I could spend hours customizing in the garage itself.
But, this game isn't without flaws. Always have to be online. Can't fully visually customize many vehicles (mainly the new most current vehicles) which is disappointing. Always nighttime in a relatively stale city with little traffic. Cops are are a joke (you really have to egg them on if you want to chase).
But once you really get into this game, it's extremely rewarding. If you've enjoyed games like Most Wanted and the Undergrounds, this is an awesome revival of that awesome feel those games delivered on. Although I still think those games are better, this game is a huge step in the right direction for the series!
Ignore all the hate!
Actual Review:
When playing a great racing game the main thing I am looking for is re-playablity. This game excels at that. The factors that make this game so fun are the game play and the customization. I really like the drift inspired control, while by no means a simulator like the Gran Tourismo series, this game is great fun in its own way, drifting at night time, around blind corners neck and neck in a Porsche. this feeling really hearkens back to the Underground days and for me was just as nostalgia inducing as it was a new exploration. While I admit, the control does take some getting used to, once you get it, it is extremely satisfying.
Now a bit on the customization. I really like the fact that you can edit and rotate and extend the decals in seemingly limitless ways, which really allows the players creativity to be the limit in how your car visually turns out. That being said, if you are looking for hundreds of different body kits and head light combinations, this game does not offer as many choices as some would like. There are not a ton of actual visual parts to add to each car and some cars seem destined to remain mostly stock for eternity. All in all though I would rate the customization aspect of this game as 9 of 10 and I spend almost as much time tweaking the cars looks as I do playing the game (but that is fun for me).
Now game play. While cruising through the story mode you are a first person racer who is seemingly thrust into this new boy-racer world where you are confronted with a group of associates who help you learn the ropes. The personalities of these people are really over the top, but in a strangely endearing way. Each one of them is tied with a play style (I.E. drift, speed, etc.) and then there are a few "boss" type character that you will meet and ultimately face including some pretty big names in the real world (no spoilers). The events that these friends invite you to accomplish are overall really fun and short (the longest race by far in the game is (9 minutes) so if you are like me and only have limited game time per week you will appreciate the amount of different play types you can get into in a single session.
Overall I think this game is a really good shot at getting back to the Underground roots. The sense of speed is phenomenal, and the always dark and rain soaked atmosphere really gets you into the "Fast and Furious" underground type mind set which is perfectly suited to this game. Again it is worth mentioning that this is an arcade style racer that is meant to be light hearted and fun so if you go into it with that mind set I have no doubts you will enjoy your time in this game.
I've been a fan for years..
Keep it up!!!!!
I am a bit late to the NFS games, but recently got this once it was priced under 20 bucks. My initial disappointment with this was when I found out that it does not work with my G29 racing wheel that I had just gotten. Granted this is more of an arcade style racing game, but my learning curve with the standard controller was a bit tough for me initially.
Graphically, the game looks very good, especially considering this game is now 3 to 4 years old. The city feels a bit empty though with only a few cars or cops here and there. It always seems to be dark and raining as well most of the time.
I am not sure I like the online always requirement, but at least for me, I haven’t found it to be a hindrance to playing solo. I like the ability to build up your car with better parts to help you compete in the harder events. Initially, I found that the tutorials to help you was a bit lacking in my opinion. The sound is decent, especially with the engine.
The different missions and events are fun but get a bit repetitive. The racing is a bit unfair at times as it seems that you have a bit lead then suddenly the competitors catch up or you can be far behind or crash and suddenly you are directly behind the pack. I also found it a bit irritating to be in the middle of an event and some notice flashes onto your screen, forcing you to hit dismiss in the middle of your racing event, usually messing up my race. The main story is a bit lackluster and short to me as well.
Overall, the game is ok, but gets stale and repetitive pretty fast.
