Mafia Definitive Edition looks great since it runs on the Mafia 3 engine, with a gorgeous city and well detailed interiors. There is a nice selection of 1930s era automobiles to drive, all of which look great and are appropriately slow and somewhat cumbersome to drive.
Despite the historical accuracies though, Mafia DE has a very tame and by the numbers Italian-American mob story and anyone who has seen popular mafia movies or played Mafia 2 won't experience all that much new. Now of course this is a remake of a game that was made prior to Mafia 2, but again I am speaking from the perspective of someone who has only prior played Mafia 2.
You'll complete typical heists, assassinations, and smuggling missions almost all of which involve a shootout and car chase sequence which do get a bit tiresome by the end of the game. The shooting controls are clumsy and guns are not typically satisfying to shoot since they feel underpowered. Enemies will take more shots than you'd expect unless you score a instant kill headshot. Some of the car chases are exciting, especially when they tie in the environment more closely, but most feel rubber-bandy, in that it is practically impossible to catch up to the car you're chasing without them bowing off at warp speed so that the chase can be concluded at a pre-determined area.
The music selection while driving was also a disappointment after the excellent radio system in Mafia 2. There are only two radio stations: one plays classical while the other is more like swing/jazz. All of the music is instrumental and there really is not much variety. The original Mafia may have been like this too, but the developers had the chance to include a wider variety of tunes but failed to do so.
Character development is also fairly lacking with most of the main character's family and personal life completely skipped over. At the beginning of the game he mentions a wife and daughter, the former of which is never seen (your character does get married to someone else later) and the later is not seen until the final cutscene and never speaks. Due to this, some of the more emotional moments in the game do not hit as hard as they could have.
I like the fact that this is a story driven open world game like Mafia 2, but most missions (chapters) are not tied together very well and the story just jumps from moment to moment with not much cohesion. There are some standout set piece moments in the game that are fun to play and visually great, but personally I was not very invested in the story past the half-way mark.
Overall Mafia DE is a great looking game and has solid mechanics for a game of its genre. Unfortunately it is let down by a ho-hum story and vanilla gameplay. That being said for $20 or less I would recommend it to a fan of Mafia 2 or someone looking for a story-driven open world game in a unique time setting as a bargain time waster.
