Editorial Reviews
YES: THE STEVEN WILSON REMIXES which spotlights five studio albums that helped secure the band’s recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. -It includes remixed versions of: The Yes Album (1971), Fragile (1971), Close To The Edge (1972), the double album Tales From Topographic Oceans (1973), and Relayer (1974). Each album features remixed audio by renowned producer Steven Wilson, released on vinyl for the first time.-After their initial release in the 1970’s,Wilson’s articulate remix shines a light on the stellar performances that run deep through each of these the albums, from hits like “Roundabout” and “I’ve Seen All Good People,” to album-side length epics like “Close To The Edge” and “The Gates Of Delirium.”-The music included in this collection confirms the band’s standing as the most enduring, ambitious, and virtuosic progressive band in rock history. It also follows the band through a number of personnel changes. Starting in February 1971 with Yes’s third studio release, The Yes Album, the band featured vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Tony Kaye and drummer Bill Bruford. Released just nine months later, Fragile was Yes’s first release with keyboardist Rick Wakeman. The same line-up returned on 1972’s Close To The Edge. A year later, drummer Alan White made his Yes debut on Tales From Topographic Oceans. And finally, keyboardist Patrick Moraz joined for Relayer in 1974

1. The Yes Album--Right out of the gate the new shine is present. Tony Kaye will be very pleased how present his Hammond is in the mix. The 'big chord' before the vocals start has more depth and B-3 growl than ever. The vocal harmonies are so evenly balanced and well placed in the stereo field, it is clear we are in for a treat. The ending of 'Starship Trooper and its steady climb to Howe's climactic solo is stellar. When the climax comes, the bass pedals holding the whole thing up shake the room, but with a clarity that does not eat up the rest of the mix. A most improved nod goes to 'A Venture'. SW found a bit longer piano intro and used it beautifully, creeping out of the ether and really setting a mood for the vastly improved mix that includes a tremendous improvement on the harmony vocals.
2. 'Fragile'--Hard to improve on perfection. Always considered Eddie Offord's production on this one second to none. While paying heed to Eddie's original tricks of panning and feeling like you are literally sitting at Bruford's drum kit, this one has a new shine to it. Highlights are the clarity and space in 'We Have Heaven', the jazz interlude section of 'South Side of the Sky' and it's amazing vocal interplay, the "found" extra two bass lines in 'The Fish', (maybe they were always there, but I never heard them before yesterday) and the immediacy of Jon's vocal in 'Heart of the Sunrise'. Oh, and when you can hear Steve Howe breath during 'Mood For A day'.
3. Close to the Edge--The Perfect Progressive Rock album. IT is in the dynamic expansion an retraction that really grabbed me on this one. The treatments that Jon's voice have always been there, but they are more affecting in these mixes. The differences in Squire's bass tones, from section to section are more pronounced and really shows how much thought went into the original production details. The extra backing vocals in the 'Get up Get Down' are neat, but I think it takes a bit of the isolationism of the emotional platitudes and vulnerability away with Squire and Howe's voices filling the space. The intensity increases leading into Wakeman's pipes is incredible. You'll swear Bruford's drums are in the room with you. The "expanse" on this lp is the big thing, not many changes were ever needed.
4> Tales-- This is the one that gets the "Most Improved' Award. Tales, to me, has always been a bit of a murky mud puddle mix. Unfortunate for such a thing of beauty. You can hear the difference immediately. Alan White's drums have an immediacy never heard before on this record. You can actually hear the hi-hat and ride cymbal. The kick drum finally kicks and his drum work is far better than I ever had the chance to hear. It puts a new propeller on the whole thing and a refreshing sense of urgency to the music. A lot more high end in the drums and percussion helps a lot. Wakeman's keys are much fuller and is closer to us in the mix than in the past mixes. some nuance and flourishes that are nice additions. "The Ancient' really benefits from the intensity increase. I might be dreaming, but I swear there is an additional rhythm bass guitar line playing underneath the classic bass solo during "Ritual'. Gives it more depth.
5. Relayer. It was getting awfully late by this point and my neighbors had probably had it with my Yes tangent. So tonight it's Relayer and I will relay my musings to you later.
A+++++ on this box. If you like Yes you will LOVE this
Overall impression of the remixing/remastering Steve Wilson has done: "Outstanding". I have multiple copies of "Close to the Edge" from various countries ("..yes, from Japan too") and none of them sound as good as Steve Wilson's remix. Not a little bit....A LOT better. I've not listened to all of the LPs yet, but "Relayer" (one of my favorites) has noticeable improvements as well. Steve didn't take anything away. It's like he filled in missing pieces and "un-muddied the water" where it needed it. The sound has more depth and definition than the original releases. (or poorly executed remasters of the past...."cough"....I'm talking to you Friday Music...."cough...) If you're a Bruford, White and/or Squire fan (...and aren't we all) you're going to be particularly pleased with what Steve has done to refine and "fatten up" the rhythm section.
Overall Quality: The gate-folded covers are top notch and made from high quality paper; the re-colored artwork is well done and adds distinction; and the 180 gram, high quality vinyl is practically silent and ensures you're getting the best possible representation of these YES master pieces.
If you are a YES fan, treat yourself. If you know a YES fan and want to make them REEEEEEALLLLY happy, this is the box set for you. Cheers!
The new Roger Dean Album Selves are also a added bonus. I personally like the original “ Tales Album Cover” but the new covers add a nice touch to an already perfect box set.
If any fans are hesitant about buying this set, don’t be, you will not be disappointed.

Kommt Zeit, kommt Remix.
