Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras (6 Year Limited USA Warranty)
What's in the box
From the manufacturer
World acclaimed ultra-telephoto zoom reborn; meet the all-new next generation
The SP 150-600mm G2 (Generation 2) ultra-telephoto lens with upgraded optical performance enables handheld shooting with remarkable definition. This new lens builds upon the success of the current SP 150-600mm (Model A011) which Tamron first introduced in December, 2013, including better overall optical performance and faster AF speed, VC enhancements, plus Fluorine Coating, FLEX ZOOM LOCK and compatibility with optional 1.4X and 2X teleconverters. Rebuilt from the ground up to meet Tamron’s strict quality standards and design specifications, this new zoom combines smart engineering and high performance with quality craftsmanship, durability and user friendliness.
Enhanced optics meet greater versatility
The SP 150-600mm G2 includes three LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements which completely eliminate axial and transverse chromatic aberrations. It also features upgraded optical construction (21 elements in 13 groups). Anti-reflection technologies, eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) Coating and BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating improve light transmission and suppress internal reflections, including light reflected off the camera’s image sensors. So even when taking a backlit or semi-backlit photograph, ghosting and flare caused by reflected light are fully eliminated. Additional enhancements expand the lens’ versatility. For example, MOD (Minimum Object Distance) has been reduced to 2.2m (86.6 in) so you can enjoy tele-macro photography and dramatic bokeh.

Capture the moment with sharpness and accuracy
The Model A022 is equipped with the USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) ring-type motor that delivers excellent responsiveness and control. AF speed is significantly improved from current model, and it enables accurate high-speed focus even when capturing moving subjects. When shooting with AF, the Full-time Manual Focus override allows you to instantly make fine focusing adjustments manually, without having to switch between modes.
Keep it steady with improved VC
The VC (Vibration Compensation) effectiveness is equivalent to 4.5 stops, based on image stabilization performance levels established by CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association) when using in VC MODE 3. Model A022 now has three types of VC modes, and it is possible to choose the optimum VC mode according to the situation for taking a photograph, such as when wishing to pan the camera. The improved VC minimizes blurring caused by slight camera movement, which is prevalent with long telephoto lenses and even more troublesome with higher-resolution cameras. VC enhances the freedom of hand-held shooting at slower shutter speeds required by low-light conditions such as dusk. VC MODE 1 is the standard mode that strikes a great balance between the stability of the viewfinder image and the stabilization effects. VC MODE 2 is exclusively used for panning. VC MODE 3 prioritizes the stabilization of the captured images and forgoes the stabilization of the viewfinder image. With the optional accessory TAMRON TAP-in Console, you can custom the configuration of VC MODE 1. Choose the viewfinder view of either Standard or viewfinder image priority.

This lens is sharp. Tack sharp. Ridiculously sharp. Its focus plane at 600mm, even at f/8, is razor thin, so any front/back focusing will make shots unusable. Verify that your copy is good with a test strip before heading to the field to avoid frustration. Mine was fine out of the box, and the crazy fast AF finds focus instantly to boot. When using the focus limiters it's even faster. It's less of a journey to focus as the motor turns, like on my Nikkor AF-S G 50mm, and more of only a slight delay before "you have arrived at focus." This is shooting on a Nikon D750, which has a good, but not the best, AF system. I find the manual focus ring essentially unusable because the throw distance is so short, but I'm not sure why you'd need it on a lens with AF this effective.
Chromatic aberration is essentially zero, and is the least of any lens I own, even wide open. I've forgotten about Lightroom's CR removal tool at this point.
OS is amazing. I usually leave it in mode 1, but occasionally find modes 2/3 useful. If I get in a stable position I can easily shoot at 1/100 and below at 600mm, which is extremely handy when I don't want to setup my tripod.
The only thing I wish this lens had/did is accept small rear filters. I haven't even tried putting filters on the front because they'd be so expensive and hard to carry around. I already have to deal with 150mm square filters for my 15-30mm, and that's about all I'm willing to put up with in a single backpack. Being able to use little 52mm circular polarizers or the like would be really nice, but truthfully I don't find myself wanting filters very often when using this lens. The enormous lens hood pulls double duty keeping dust and debris off the objective, and it's easy enough to clean with good lens wipes.
The tripod collar is well-designed and just works. It's unremarkable in its functionality in that it does what it's supposed to.
I can't believe this lens goes for as cheap as it does, even at full retail. If you get a good copy, you'll have no regrets. If you get a bad copy, that's why you buy from Amazon.

The original Tamron 150-600 and the Sigma Contemporary are similar and I loved my Sigma. Looking at the alternatives, the Sigma Sport version is both heavier and more robust, but is also double the price of the contemporary. The Sigma 60-600 is compelling for its range, but it is 50% heavier, too and also expensive.
The Tamron G2 is the "Goldilocks" lens in this group because it is only a couple of ounces heavier than the original Tamron and Sigma lenses but offers dust and water sealing they don't. It's also compatible with Tamron's Tap-In console that allows you to tune the lens in useful ways. Sigma's lenses are also compatible with their dock, and Sigma's does offer some different features, but the ability to tune the Tamron at 18 different focal length/focus distances is most compelling.
I bought a Tamron G2 from this Amazon listing. There were several sellers at the time on this listing, all offering the lens for the exact same price. So I chose the one closest to me geographically as I was still on vacation birding and wanted it as fast as possible.
After using it for a few days, I noticed that the autofocus was very inconsistent. Hey, it happens. I did try to tune the lens with Reikan FoCal once I returned home from the trip, but the issues seemed to be with the autofocus itself. I wrote Tamron and asked for suggestions. The reply I got was surprising. Nowhere in the Amazon listing was anything mentioned about the lens being an import/gray market lens. But, sure enough, Tamron informed me that the lens I bought was an import/gray market lens and would, therefore, not be covered under warranty and would not be repairable by them.
I liked the lens, especially the aforementioned sealing and tuneability, the Arca-Swiss compatible tripod mount, and, especially, the flex lock on the zoom. After starting the return to Amazon, I wrote the other sellers for this listing, all still offering the lens at the same price, and found that it is a mix of authorized and unauthorized sellers selling either Gray market/Import lenses OR US versions. There is no point in mentioning the sellers by name as they could have changed by the time you read this, but if you are considering this lens or any other, suggest emailing the seller ahead of purchasing to ensure that you are getting a US market product. If you do order one, the thing to look for is the Tamron hologram on the top of the box. If it's missing, you have likely purchased a gray market lens. Doesn't mean it won't work, but Tamron-USA won't touch it if you need it serviced.
Aside from the issues noted, the G2 is an excellent lens. The features it offers over the original Sigma and Tamron 150-600's are well worth the extra money while it offers most of what the Sigma Sport does at a much lower price.

The very first shots it took were hand-held at at 600mm (shutter speeds from 250-500). I was blown away by the sharpness and clarity. This lens is quite heavy and not particularly easy to hold steady. The VC modes seemed to deal with my unsteady hands quite well. In most cases, however, I would recommend a tripod.
Next I compared this lens with my nikon 70-300m taking some shots of smal text on a street sign both lenses were set at 300mm. At the very least, the Tamron was at least as sharp.
While its weight of 5 Lbs doesnt seem that big of a deal, it certainly weights me down when combined with the rest of the gear AND now the need to carry a tripod. With some of the great results I have been getting so far I will live with this extra "burden"
