I compared the D-Link USB 2.0 7-Port Hub to the Anker Uspeed USB 3.0 9-Port Hub and the Satechi 12 Port USB Hub for the purpose of mining Bitcoins with ASICminer - USB ASIC Bitcoin Miners. The Anker is considered the "gold standard" but is pretty expensive: more than $8/port. The D-Link works out to less than $4/port. The Satechi works out to almost $2/port.For the tests, I used an Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit Desktop system with an Intel motherboard. Each hub was plugged into a USB 3.0 port. I compiled cgminer and libusb on the machine. Without compiling libusb, I found you can't get full speed out of the ASICminer.The Anker Uspeed USB 3.0 9-Port Hub can run 10 miners. The miners are detected as soon as cgminer starts up and quickly stabilize at full speed. I've run 10 miners on the hub for several days in a row with no cooling issues and almost no . The hub actually will work powered off the motherboard. The power supply for the hub is a separate power-brick with standard 2-prong plug.The D-Link USB 2.0 7-Port Hub can run 7 miners. About half the miners are detected on start up and the rest show up on the first hot plug sync. The miners take several minutes to stabilize in speed. One port seemed to have higher hardware errors. I suppose it's the sideways orientation of the miners, but I had to set a fan blowing across the miners to get them to stabilize properly. The power supply is an integrated power transformer. The two-prong plug is oriented at a 90-degree angle.The Satechi 12 Port USB Hub appeared to be able to run 12 miners. Only one miner was detected at start up. The rest took several minutes but eventually popped up. Once the miners were detected, it took a fairly long time to stabilize. I almost gave up on them but after about 10 minutes, cgminer reported all 12 miners running near full speed. There were fairly high hardware errors on several ports but the throughput levelled out at full speed. Ultimately, the blocks submitted to the pool must not have been accepted. None of the miners seemed to be submitting good blocks. Seemed to work but didn't.

I went with Anker for my replacement USB hub over multiple other odd named companies, mostly from mainland China. I am sure Anker is also made in ROC, but that is a separate issue here. The hub I purchased offered what I was looking for at a price point I could live with. It has been working as designed from initial install without any need for software drivers. Backward compatible to all prior USB formats, so worth the price for sure.

There are ten ports total. Ports one through nine are for data transfer only. Those nine ports can be used for a keyboard, a mouse, thumb drives, cameras, game controllers or external hard drives.
The tenth port is for charging an I-Phone. (Voltage; 5V - 2.1A Smart Charging Port)

The ninth port I am not currently using.
When I plugged my hub into my laptop the first time, it was recognized right a way. I then plugged all the above listed USB devices into the hub one at a time watching all my thumbnail drives show up in My Computer.
All the above items work the way they should using this hub.
I use the tenth port to charge my Samsung Galaxy S3. It is nice because most of my time is spent at my computer. Before, I would either charge my phone via a USB port on my laptop or an A/C plug in the bathroom.
The problem with charging a phone via a USB port on your computer is, when you shut down your computer, the phone no longer is charging which means by morning, the battery is dead. With the hub, my phone charges even when the computer is shut off and I do not have to run to the bathroom to answer my phone.
The transformer (power brick) itself does not plug into an ac outlet. There is a cord that is attached to the brick that goes to an ac outlet and another that connects the brick to the hub. This is nice because bricks can take up a lot of space on a power strip (surge suppressor).
There are no mounting holes in the back of the hub. Best bet, is to use velcro to keep it from sliding if needed.

Be advised; a USB 2.0 product will work fine plugged into a USB 3.0 port. USB 3.0 devices generally are not compatible with USB 2.0 ports. The reason; USB 3.0 has more pins then USB 2.0 does.
There are USB 3.0 devices that are backward compatible with USB 2.0. Be sure and check product specifications. Make sure you understand the differences between USB 3.0 and 2.0.
If you are confused by what you just read, don't be. This hub will work with USB 3.0, 2.0 and 1.1 devices. Plain and simple. But the compatibility may not go the other way with regards to the devices themselves. Some USB 3.0 devices are backward compatible to USB 2.0 while others may not. Again, check product specifications to be sure.

I have another Anker product that came with what I need, a USB-C connection to my new Mac. I didn't look carefully at the information for this unit. I hope that this unit will solve my other problems even though I have to put a converrter in between the hub and my computer.

Once I started racing sims all my usb ports got taken up fast, Ive bought most of the usb ports out there only to find they stop working after a few months. I waited some before writing this review to make sure it was up to par, and sure enough Anker came through again. This little thing is durable and works great! Charges all my stuff and still has plenty room for all my attachments. Im currently running the thing with all the usb ports used and not a single problem! Love it and would buy another if i needed more ports!

Please read all the way to the end. 1st device had issues, replacement is most stable device I've ever installed on my system.

I had high hopes for this device. Notice the past tense. Initial one disappointed; replacement however is the most stable reliable device ever attached to my laptop. Bill Gates needs to TAKE NOTICE!

1st Device:
Whether attached devices are USB 3.0 or USB 2.0, it seems that only the 1st 2 ports are reliable(measured from power cord and USB 3.0 computer connection). All devices tested have their OWN external power! Ports 3-10 will not maintain connection for more than 24 hrs. After dropping ready, several hours of fiddling are required to re-establish connection (usually including a cold re-boot). A simple unplug/replug NEVER works. Have experienced these problems with 3,4 and 5 devices attached and have varied ports used with no change in behavior.
I have another USB 3.0 Hub (4-port) which maintains (all) 4 devices for about a week, then drops ALL; but unlike this device a simple unplug/replug resets all ports 90+% of the time. The other vendor's hub is attached to a USB 3.0 2-port express card, so it's issues COULD be the result problems with the express card. THIS hub has ONLY been attached to a native USB 3.0 port on my laptop, a port which has been rock solid with other devices.

This device is NOT ready for prime time.

Contacted their Customer Support. Very willing to help and immediately offered a replacement. I misplaced initial shipping box so (with full permission by CS) waited for arrival of new unit to return old one.

Following written three days after installing new hub:
Replacement arrived from CS. I have to tell you this one (so far) could not be more stable. I have both USB 3.0 (self powered HDs) and USB 2.0 (Hub ONLY Powered, 2 1.2" HD Enclosures) attached for now 3 days and have had a total of ZERO drops! Had I received this one initially, my review would have been 5 stars. My guess is that there is a bad batch of power supplies. Referring back to prior issues. I can move ports at will. Reestablishing connection just WORKS. As I have HAD NO Drops, I cannot comment on re-establishing connection after that.

This one is as it should be --- INVISIBLE, just works.

Give it a shot if you need a lot of USB 3.0 connectivity. If you get a bad one CS will fix it. With the kind of support I received, similar concern will soon root out the bad ones.

Update after almost 90 days of use:
This device is solid as a rock! I have 24/7 had 9 or 10 devices attached. My system has crashed a dozen times; but this hub HAS NEVER LOST A SINGLE CONNECTION!! Not even with a(previously) flakey Bluetooth dongle! (This update is the source of reference to Bill Gates!). Other USB 3.0 hubs are no longer attached to my system. I rely on this one alone.

Second Update (and final) after another several weeks.
This replacement device has STILL NEVER dropped a single connection. The three other USB 3.0 hubs I have are now gathering dust in a corner. This is the only one I use. Could not recommend more highly.

Summary: All electronics have a small infant mortality. I was unlucky to get one of those initially. However, the quality work done by this manufacturer is more than evident in the replacement; a replacement offered quickly, with little hassle and NOT ONE PENNY OF EXPENSE on my part. And for the record, I am a 30+ year veteran of Hi-Tech, so I have more than a casual basis for my opinions.
If you need the connectivity - this is the device to buy! Could not recommend more highly.
